Never cash. Mostly card, but some grocery stores have apps for self scan and checkout so I use those when available. Never seen a store that had Apple Pay.
Interesting. Around SF Bay Area I use Apple Pay 80% of the time or more. But I carry cash/cards for that 20%.

Never cash only my phone which is very convenient. Here in Greece everyone accepts Apple Pay and in the slim case I need cash my bank has nfc to withdraw that I only needed once in the last 2 years. I was carrying an apple leather wallet for my id and driving licence but since these integrated to apple wallet the last one and a half year stoped using it completely. I like the freedom to leave your home carrying only your phone.

When you folks go out to eat, shop, or whatever: Do you still carry cash and/or physical cards? Or do you rely entirely on your iPhone (and Apple Pay) for making payments?

I always carry cash and pay with cash whenever possible. I also make a point of boycotting businesses that don't accept cash whenever possible.

Sort of funny to call carrying sophisticated gps tracking device that lets processors track every penny you spend "freedom." You'd be a lot more free with a billfold.

Some restaurants have these at each table for payments, they're not all that common however. More common at chains like Chili's. They usually show ads/silly mobile games when not being used to pay.
Why would someone go to a restaurant with a screen at the table? Is the food at places like that fit for human consumption?

Depends where I intend to go. Generally its just my phone if I'm local etc, but otherwise I have e thin card holder that comes with me, along with some emergency cash that I never really use. For instance, the place I fuel my car up from doesn't accept contactless at the pump - I still have to insert a card and use my PIN......

My paranoia of card cloning, theft, etc, meant that I never used a card. When I got my first iPhone, I briefly used that and carried an “emergency £20” with it.

These days, I just use my watch. No cash, no card, no phone, just the watch. If I was going on a long journey, I’d take some cash with me - just in case - but I wouldn’t expect to use it.

I carry one credit card that we use as a debit card, but I haven't carried cash in a long time. Sadly, we have to have a card with us because many places still don't offer tap-to-pay/Apple pay, etc.

Here in the UK cards are still a necessity. There is a daily limit on the amount of contactless payments you can make before needing a PIN as a fraud prevention method. If you're only nipping to the shops its fine but on a night out or a weekend away where you might make lots of small payments you will hit that ceiling.

Cash is still useful for letting the kids get something from the capsule machine in the pub. A pound coin has obvious value to kids where a card does not. I hope we never get to a cashless society. Its still the only way of decentralising your money should the need arise.

I expect you will find a correlation between iPhone only carriers and regions where Apple Pay is ubiquitous.

Once you realise you can and do spend weeks and months without having to use a card or cash, leaving the house with just a phone becomes the default.

You still have to think ahead if your day is anomalous - if you expect to be out for a very long time, use your phone much more heavily than usual, or if leaving the house for the day with 20% battery remaining - then I would take a debit card and/or a portable charger to be safe.

But on routine days stepping out with a full battery it’s easy to ditch the wallet when you can use contactless Apple Pay everywhere.

Confidence that your usage habits and battery health combined will see you comfortably to the end of the day is the potential limiting factor.

I don't carry cash and prefer to do online payments. Due to the QR scan system, cash payments have decreased.

100% iPhone. Driver's license, credit card, everything on the device.

I only take my wallet when I'm traveling for fear of needing something and not having it.

100% Apple Pay. It's literally accepted everywhere in Canada. Haven't used or carried cash in years. Only carry physical cards when planning a large purchase (over the tap to pay limit, usually $250).

There is no daily limit for contactless payments for Apple Pay, I’ve literally not carried a card with me for years and I’m in the UK.

I’ve been on plenty of nights and weekends away and tapped my phone or watch easily 10+ times in a row.

Physical cards and cash are much more robust than a phone…

I mean for starters, you don’t have to worry about charging your credit cards for them to work…or finishing up a long day of skiing only to find your credit card battery got killed in the cold…

While I don’t carry nearly as much cash or as many cards as I used too, it feels irresponsible to let yourself be completely dependent on your phone.
Fair enough. From my perspective, it feels irresponsible to allow my phone battery to die.

I don't ski, so there's that, but my phone is such an important tool, for both work and my personal life, that I have literally never allowed it to die (that's not hyperbole). I charge it each night, and every time I get in my car – even with heavy use, the battery has never gone below about 10-15%.

I recently got a cellular Apple Watch, so that's another layer of coverage which allows me access to my cards.

My physical wallet is in my car. In the unlikely event that my phone and watch both die or are stolen, and I have my car, I can access my cards there. Further, even if my car is stolen along with my phone and watch, I can always call my wife or other family member to assist (I have a few key phone numbers memorized).

So, I take your point about being dependent on a phone, but I have a different approach which works for me.

Since the pandemic (2020) I just carry the iphone or the apple watch

Now apple should make the apple pay works even when iphone is dead, like the “iphone is findable” feature

I actually prefer these card readers at the table when out at a restaurant, because I can most likely use Apple Pay and I do not have to hand my card over to the server, and I can order more food and drinks without waiting for my server to come back to the table. I just turn the screen away from my family when we’re eating to decrease distractions while enjoying our meal out together.

My tap limit is over $2k... kinda scary, but we're insured through the bank for any theft, etc. Once I got used to the idea, I grew to love the convenience of paying for anything – short of a car – with my phone or watch.

To those who might scoff, I never use my card, so nobody can steal my phone or watch and access my cards via tap – which makes me wonder if the card tap limit is $250 but the phone tap limit is increased due to the verification required to use it.

I started to make the switch after my bank in Switzerland started allowing debit cards to be used with Apple Pay (prior to not so long ago, UBS only let you use UBS credit cards with Apple Pay).

Contactless is ubiquitous in Europe (nobody is pulling a Walmart), and I throw 20 CHF in my coat if I think I might need cash.

Only exception is that bring my wallet when traveling because you never know when you’ll need an ID (and it’s my work permit so I’d rather it not just be loose in my bag) but other than that my wallet just sits on my dining room table.
