Why would someone go to a restaurant with a screen at the table? Is the food at places like that fit for human consumption?
I think Cheddar's has these. Their food is pretty good. I can't remember any other, maybe Chili's and Olive Garden.

I think I've seen one at mom and pop restaurant in the DFW area. I can see this is a better solution than taking a guest's card to the processing station. I've seen comments from the rest of the world saying it's insane we let them do that in the USA.

Olive Garden has them. It's the only restaurant I've been to with them.

If I was forced to watch advertising during a meal I'd leave that establishment and never go there again.

These terminals aren't mounted to the table, you can remove them to a chair etc. I think waiters can take them away entirely if you ask.

My problem with them is they have cameras (possibly microphones as well?) and there's no privacy policy for dis/agreement.

Restaurants outside the US do it right IMO - they just bring the scannner over to the table once you're ready for the bill.

Those are becoming more common at US restaurants, but it's taking too long. I know they have been a thing in Canada for 15 years, at least.

I try to use tap when available.

In my wallet I carry 2 cards, my DL, and my badge to get into work. For the cards, one of them gets me cash back when I use it at work and I use it regularly. You need the physical card to get the cash back, though. I also have my health insurance card in it but I can probably get by with using the digital one.

So right now, the main things keeping me from going sans wallet is my DL, work badge, and the ability to use tap pretty much every where I go.

I carry cash and cards. As some have mentioned, not everyone accepts non contact payments. I also use cash for smaller purchases and places that charge extra for non-cash.

Still using cash and card. I pretty much stopped using Apple Pay after my cards got RFID/contactless. Less chance of losing my phone that way.

Yeah, as someone that travels for work, I'm pretty familiar with the US being behind the rest of the world in just about everything. ;)

I carry rare metals as backup currency but they are all stored in my phone. 😂

Seriously though, I always carry some cash. As the saying goes, cash is king!

I always carry card and small cash. Too many instances where the pos terminal for nfc payment wasn't working. Then id have to break out the physical card. I rarely need to use cash though. Typically the only place ive run into where i was forced to use cash is a barbershop. I usually end not using them again lol. But i get it. They dont want to deal with fees. Though I feel like they also under reporting their income too. Shady tax shenanigans.

I have everything in my wallet, phone, and watch. If I get myself a new wallet, I may reduce the amount of card and bank notes. After a certain period of time, you simply cannot remove the cards from a leather wallet without replacing the whole thing. Don't get me started on keeping cash in a wallet, it just won't fit local bank notes when doing international trips.

I use my iPhone or Apple Watch to pay for everything I can, but still have a physical wallet with cash and cards just in case. It’s getting rarer, but I there are still occasions where NFC payements don’t go through and I have to haul out the card or even cash. Or my card at a store that still does not accept NFC payments (Walmart).

My car supports Car Key and my front door lock supports Home Key, but I still carry physical car and house keys. Although over the weekend I experimented with taking the car to the store, leaving the car keys at home and only using the iPhone, and didn’t have any problems. But the store was close enough for me to walk home if something went wrong.

Once you have had your first phone stolen you will have a totally different outlook on what you will use your next phone for.

I still carry a few cards and small amount of cash but have gone more minimalistic with the following wallet/Magsafe stand:

If forced, I could probably align my purchases with only those vendors who use Apple Pay. But I choose not to. I would consider the USA to be a big region where it might be thought that Apple Pay is ubiquitous.

Can you please tell Walmart that?

Home Depot finally came around and started allowing tap to pay though. I still use cards, even though all of my cards are on my phone. And I do realize what you've suggested as a realization. But I still choose to carry cards. I don't hate Apple Pay. I use it sometimes, but I just prefer tapping to pay with my card I guess.

This places me out of your norm I suppose.

PS. I also still carry cash, just for those situations where paying with my phone or a card isn't allowed or convenient. Plenty of places in the US that are still cash and carry.
Not a question for eyoungren in particular, but for anyone who knows. Just that his comment brought this to mind.

For me, the big advantage to using my watch/phone for transactions is the security. As I understand it, ApplePay gives you a kind of fake card # that is only used for that transaction, but Apple is able to tie back to your card, so that even if someone were to steal the number, they would not be able to use it for another transaction. Does Tap to Pay using the actual credit card offer the same protection? I always assumed it was some sort of software thing, done on the watch or phone, but maybe the network does it & cards offer the same protection.

I use my watch for almost everything. Can’t vote as it isn't an option! :)

Since Covid I hardly ever have any cash. Even used my watch in the US last year, as more places are using contactless now…
where are you based. in Croatia and greece last winter i never pulled my wallet out. all Apple Pay w watch. especially loved it it bars. tap and grab.

Whenever possible I try to go phone-only, my DL and all of my credit and debit cards are in Apple Wallet and we have app-based access control where I live so no physical keys except for my car key.

I have a MagSafe wallet with one credit card and my physical DL that I will snap on if going to a restaurant or somewhere with uncertain Apple Pay support (or driving, at least in my state you still need to carry the physical license when driving).

Just went to brunch with my wife yesterday and the restaurant was cash only. They have an ATM machine for customers if happen to be without cash but you'll still need your debit card.

Apple Pay isn't accepted at our local HomeDepot. Basically, I only resort to my phone or watch in the off-chance I forget my wallet. It's actually faster to tap with my card than unlocking my phone to use Apple Pay. Also, if you're at a restaurant that brings you the bill I'm not going to hand them my phone to run the payment. Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are great backup options but they're not the primary form of payment for me.

Cash is king! Legal tender of the land. You don’t have to reconcile statements for purchases, is accepted everywhere, no Identity Theft problem.
Horrible rewards program, though. I will continue to take my $100+ in rewards each month for just using my cards.

And while it might be accepted everywhere, you might be waiting for someone to get a manager and go to safe for change or be the first person to use cash on a day where the opening cashier forgot to count a till because it is so rarely used. It becomes very inconvenient when the businesses you frequent view it as an interruption to their workflow.
