I expect you will find a correlation between iPhone only carriers and regions where Apple Pay is ubiquitous.

Once you realise you can and do spend weeks and months without having to use a card or cash, leaving the house with just a phone becomes the default.
If forced, I could probably align my purchases with only those vendors who use Apple Pay. But I choose not to. I would consider the USA to be a big region where it might be thought that Apple Pay is ubiquitous.

Can you please tell Walmart that?

Home Depot finally came around and started allowing tap to pay though. I still use cards, even though all of my cards are on my phone. And I do realize what you've suggested as a realization. But I still choose to carry cards. I don't hate Apple Pay. I use it sometimes, but I just prefer tapping to pay with my card I guess.

This places me out of your norm I suppose.

PS. I also still carry cash, just for those situations where paying with my phone or a card isn't allowed or convenient. Plenty of places in the US that are still cash and carry.

I still prefer to use contactless over my phone. When tapping to get on the tube and on and off the bus it feels safer and easier to just whip out the card instead of the phone.

100% iPhone. Driver's license, credit card, everything on the device.

I only take my wallet when I'm traveling for fear of needing something and not having it.
I live in Phoenix, Arizona, home of the once famous Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. I can and have put my DL on my phone, but I always carry it with me in my wallet. A physical card is always a good hedge whenever dealing with law enforcement around here.

Was recalcitrant about using my phone for paymnets as the convenience of my secrid was on par until the suica card and metro use in Tokyo built the muscle memory.

Mostly pay with dematerialized but will keep cash and cards on hand.

Some restaurants have these at each table for payments, they're not all that common however. More common at chains like Chili's. They usually show ads/silly mobile games when not being used to pay.
I see these a lot, and it was years ago I saw one for the first time. They can also be used for other things, like reordering drinks (and not having to wait for the server to come around).

There is also the case where the server carries a device for both taking down customer orders as well as taking payments at the table.

As far as having a screen on the table, I get those who would dislike it, but you can push it aside or turn it away.

I carry a wallet but only ever take it out for my work ID

I have the ridge biflex wallet which is tiny.... I carry a debit card, 2 credit cards, my work ID and Tesla key card, license.... Then like about $60 in cash usually.

But I tap to pay everywhere I go, use my phone or watch to unlock and start my car... I have the key card on me in case of emergencies (lose my phone, battery dies, etc...)

Theoretically I don't need to carry anything other than my license and work ID.... but I guess I'm not ready to go fully digital yet.

The only time I take a card out is when I need to get cash out of a machine. It would be nice if you could choose your bank card in apple wallet and tap your phone down on the ATM but you can’t really do that in the uk (I think they can do it in the usa?)

There is no daily limit for contactless payments for Apple Pay, I’ve literally not carried a card with me for years and I’m in the UK.

I’ve been on plenty of nights and weekends away and tapped my phone or watch easily 10+ times in a row.
Must be my bank then! I regularly hit a limit that requires me to use a Pin.

I carry a physical revolut card for backup, with limited funds, and the equivalent of 50 dollars as the backup of the backup. But my first choice is always paying with Apple Pay.

Meh, Apple Pay is handy but it's not that much more handy than pulling out a card, and I don't go out of my way looking for Apple Pay support. Restaurants, bars and fuel pumps here rarely take Apple Pay, so a card it is. Sometimes I like to leave my phone at home, too, so I need cards. It's most useful for me at the work cafeteria as I'm not going to carry around wallet in my scrubs.

I'm currently working on moving back to cash on a regular basis for privacy reasons, but will miss the CC rewards, so we'll see.

I have a credit card and debit card plus my Tesla keycard as well as a full wallet of other stuff and a few hundred dollars.

Apple Pay and nfc is 99% enabled in my area, the 1% is Walmart. I know people who have dropped their phones and sent them out of commission.

My wife Mrs. Moneybags mostly pays cash.

I carry about $50 cash in my wallet for the odd occasion where I can't pay with any other means.

I used to use my watch a lot, but recently switched to my credit card. The phone has saved me a couple of times. I went shopping for groceries.. Got to the till and realized I forgot my wallet and watch at home. I was saved by the iPhone :)

Very rarely do I have cash on me. My wallet does have my drivers license, so I always have it on me. But if I’m running a quick errand, I’ll leave the wallet in my car center console and just bring my iPhone in if I know the place accepts Apple Pay.

It is very rare I carry actual cash as pretty much everywhere from market stalls, corner shops and just about every retailer accepts Apple Pay here in the UK. This has been the case since about 2018.

For bigger purchases I am more inclined to buy online or my wife will have a card on her if we are out and about. Rare that is used though. I get the impression America is a few years behind a lot of Europe and Asia when it comes to payments, judging by the threads I have read on here.

Pretty much most stores have a camera at the checkout, and tracking you by different means. There were bunch of teens who threw Molotov cocktails at cars parked in the drive ways. Cops went through purchases at nearest Walmart, found the items used for making those cocktails, and easily identified the teens who used cash with cameras in the store and parking lot.
Not to mention the phone you are carrying anyway is tracking your location.

iPhone only.

Was only a few years ago Medicare got an app and my health insurance adopted apple wallet.

I still have a bellroy wallet with physical cards but it lives at home.

Sounds like the US is very behind Australia as well.

Tap payments have been everywhere here since about 2014

Sort of funny to call carrying sophisticated gps tracking device that lets processors track every penny you spend "freedom." You'd be a lot more free with a billfold.
The device you carry anyway tracks your location when you spend cash…

Same as the UK, and I remember 'chip and pin' was everywhere in the UK from about 2006. I visited the States in 2012 and was shocked how many places swiped cards and asked for signatures. Not to mention people walking off with your card when you are paying, which is always very suspicious 😲

I go to restaurants to get away from crap like this. If they insisted on leaving one at my table or making me use it instead of just talking to my waiter, I'd probably suffer through it once and then never come back to that restaurant.

I feel exactly the same about places that try to make me use my phone to look at a tiny little menu instead of just handing me a normal one. Again, I'm at the restaurant with someone and NOT interested in yet more screen interaction. I get quite enough as it is, thanks.

I use cash constantly. A lot of businesses give a discount for cash because it saves them from being reamed with fees. I'm on board for that, especially at small businesses. I am a little sick of the middlemen skimming data and money off every transaction that takes place.

When you folks go out to eat, shop, or whatever: Do you still carry cash and/or physical cards? Or do you rely entirely on your iPhone (and Apple Pay) for making payments?

The opposite. I often leave my phone at home. It's liberating.

I worked at Target here from 2009-2014. I saw the introduction of the chip and pin and no pin needed under $100.

Chip was so much more awkward and annoying than swipe. Not as easy movement and people seemed to get confused how to do it. Then tap took over.

I remember our old massive eftpos machines being updated with a tap pad and then replaced before I left.

Depends on where I am. If I'm not in the US (which is a few times per month because of work), I generally only carry my phone, an ID, and sometimes my debit card if think there's any possibility of needing local currency.

When at home in the US I carry my money clip - which will have my ID, a few cards, and some cash. Especially here in the NY area many places give pretty substantial cash discounts, so it's helpful to have a few hundred bucks on hand while out and about.
