you don’t have to unlock your iphone to use apple pay. Just double click the side button.
You still have to authenticate with FaceID, and in the event it doesn't recognize my face immediately due to mask/sunglasses/hat then I need to enter the passcode. In the end, it's faster for me to pull out my credit card and tap.

If all it took was clicking the side-button then you're screwed if someone steals your phone.

I don't need to carry any physical keys with me anymore, for years now, so that's reduced a bunch of weight from my pockets. However, I haven't been able to completely ditch my wallet and, for that reason, my phone can't truly replace my wallet...yet.

Cash + physical I like to have offline backup in case something went wrong. Also not wise to switch entirely from cash 😉

The kiosk isn’t the best solution, though. Only americans could have thought of that. I prefer to have the card reader broght by the staff when I’m ready to pay, which is how it’s done everywhere in the world but the USA.
I’m able to see what is rung up throughout our meal and order more food and drinks without looking for our server. I can pay when we’re ready, do not have to hand my card over to our server and I can use Apple Pay, even with my prepaid card.

In my daily living, I don't carry cash but I do carry physical cards just because I do have a wallet.

But if you mean do I feel comfortable moving around my daily life without cash and cards, yes, I do. But that's only for my daily routine living situation.

As soon as I'm travelling, I'm not as comfortable because I'm out of my environment and am less sure of what I may be facing so I will have my physical cards with me. And if I'm travelling internationally, definitely will have cash.

"Everywhere in the world but the USA" is maybe casting the net a bit too far here. In Japan, for example, you don't pay at the table at all. You pay a cashier on your way out of the restaurant, or scan a QR code on your check at a self-service checkout and pay there.

Voted iPhone, but technically Apple Watch most of the time! Very easy in the UK to use contactless everywhere; no need to carry physical cards or cash. Even my car keys are on my iPhone and Watch.

When you folks go out to eat, shop, or whatever: Do you still carry cash and/or physical cards? Or do you rely entirely on your iPhone (and Apple Pay) for making payments?
I have wanted to ditch the wallet but I carry currently carry 2x ID, multiple cards, and cash. At least I'm down to the Ridge wallet. I suppose I could get a MagSafe wallet and get down to the IDs, 1 card, and a folded bill as I try to use Apple Pay as much as possible. I just wonder if I'd encounter "that time" when I don't have something I need.

Depends on where you live I suppose.

In India, there's no reason to carry a wallet. Nearly nobody prefers to be paid in cash and cards are accepted everywhere but not used nearly as frequently as the rest of the world (no Apple Pay here yet either), mainly because everybody from street vendors to restaurants to websites to apps to even your friends and family use a QR-code based system called UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and the country runs on that.

In addition, the government provides a secure digital wallet called DigiLocker that houses verified digital documents like your national ID card, driver's license, insurance, income tax card, etc., so you don't need any physical cards or documents there either.

Even in airports, once you register for biometric verification, you can walk right in after a Face ID-like scan.

Can't remember a time when I carried a physical wallet within India - it's only when I am traveling abroad.

I have a Ridge Wallet too. I'm thinking about getting another one in a different color. I see you have the bill strap, do you have one with the bill fold? Which one do you prefer?
I have the Black Matte Titanium, the Gunmetal Aluminum and the Alpine Blue (Aluminum). I don't see a point in their bifold wallet unfortunately. I could just go back to Walmart and get another bifold if I wanted that.

All three of mine have both the cash strap on the back and the money clip on the front. The clip on the front is a hack, I don't actually store cash there (I use the cash strap in back). I did that so I could attach my wallet(s) to the inside of my front pocket.

I do prefer these wallets and I am partial to the metal ones. Both my wife and son have the carbon fiber versions though.

And to make this relevant to the topic at hand…I just prefer taking out my wallet and using my card instead of my phone. The Ridge makes that convenient.

I use Apple Pay (to a rewards credit card) wherever available, but some merchants, even huge ones like Walmart, don't accept it. Otherwise I'll just use the physical card. I used to give gratuities (to restaurant servers, hair stylists, etc.) in cash, but recently have started putting those on the card too.

Cash 4ever baby ! Digital currency is designed to track your movements and monitor your spending ultimately leaving a huge paper trail .. not to mention fees and being hack prone
So I guess you have no mobile phone on you, no matter if smart or dumb, because if somebody wants to track you that's all they need.

iPhone = credit card
Debit card = my bank account

Guess which one requires more steps to budget your account and puts you at risk of paying extra fees?

I haven't paid with anything but a credit card in a decade, and I've paid zero in fees and interest.

Additionally, you can use your debit card with your phone. I have mine in my Apple Wallet.

And in the rest of the world we don’t hand our card over to the server either. They bring the card reader to the table when they bring the check and we can use apple pay. The US is the only place where restaurants still exist where the server must take your card away. That old system was dropped everywhere else decades ago.

Ok, pay at the front is fine. But they still don’t take your card away from you. Only in the USA they keep doing that and people are ok with it.
