A case and screen protector w/every phone. Bought a Torras case after searching on Amazon for a few days once I knew I was going ahead w/getting a SE2022.

I was so impressed with it that I went and bought a spare. Figure I'll be using this SE for 6+ years and who knows if this case will still be around in 5 years. 😀

I did a case on my first one, but decided it did more harm than good. Since then my phones have gone nude.
  • Makes the phone bulkier
  • If it's grippy, it makes the phone more difficult to access
  • More likely to snag on something and tumble to the ground
  • Unattractive, even if minimalist or clear
  • Detracts from the iPhone's premium appearance
  • Dust, grime, hair, and pet fur works its way between the case and the phone
  • Risks damage to the phone when removed/put back on
Not for me.

Does anybody actually clean their phones when they slap a case onto it? I reckon it’s basic hygiene but most people seem to forget that their phones are germ magnets. I am absolutely baffled at the claims that hair, dust and grime work their way into phones because I’ve been using cases religiously for 8 years and have never seen that happen to my own personal devices. I do clean my phone once per week, or every other week, though which involves removing it from the case, cleaning the case and the phone with a wet cloth and some liquid soap. The whole case normally gets submerged and thoroughly cleaned in the process and the phone has every bit of dirt removed from it. The whole process takes no longer than 5 minutes. I have seen a lot of friends with disgusting phones who otherwise appear to be clean people. Such a strange paradox.

Also, which cases cause damage to phones? I have used Otterbox cases, Apple silicone & other branded cases along with 2 piece cases and none of them have caused a single scratch to any of my phones. I have 6S, SE1, 8 and a 13 all in “as new” condition with zero imperfections despite all being thoroughly used. Not using a case will VERY LIKELY cause a minimum of some noticeable superficial damage over 1-2 years of use and a moderate probability of serious damage such as cracked glass to the front/back.

It’s a no brainier for me.

I don't recall the manufacturer. I tried a few and settled on the best of a hideous lot. It was a slim, hard-backed clear case with rubberized hard plastic sidewalls and reinforced rubber corner guards.

The particular case I had was a 1-piece affair that popped over the device from the back, securing with a lip just over the edge of the glass. The case dragging over the buttons when being taken on and off concerned me, and I wasn't a fan of how difficult pressing the buttons through a case was. Nonetheless, I thought I needed it and persisted in using it. Everyone told me the phone should have a case. Continual removal of the case for cleaning eventually caused a slight separation of the glass from the body and reduced touch sensitivity in the area where that separation took place. After I noticed the separation happening, I stopped removing the case regularly for cleaning, since doing so would cause more damage, and the lip of the case helped to secure the separated glass in place. This is when the case became positively disgusting inside.

When I eventually got a new phone, I thought through the life of the previous one and couldn't account for a single drop that wasn't the case's fault (getting snagged on something, being difficult to pull out of a pocket due to the rubberized edges, etc). That, plus the damage and the filth led me to seeing how things would go without a case. I'm sure there are cases out there that don't have these problems, but since I've been getting along fine without, I can't see going back.

I've gone caseless for more than 5 years, and the only noticeable damage has been a small scuff on one corner of the glass on an old iPhone 8 due to falling hard onto pavement a few months before I replaced it with a 13. I slipped and the phone went flying. These phones don't get enough credit for how tough they actually are.

Well I’ve never seen a case that’s so hard that it could cause damage to a phone by separating both the body and screen. One crappy case doesn’t prove your point though because, like I said, I’ve been using cases from different manufacturers for almost a decade without causing even so much as a scratch on any of my devices. I always purchase premium cases though and never cheap out. Tech 21, Otterbox, Spigen and Apple are the brands I tend to gravitate towards because I trust them to make cases which are designed to protect phones and not destroy them.

A friend with an iPhone 13 was at my place last night who had never removed his rubber case in over 1.5 years resulting in his phone being completely caked in dust, dirt and lint. Even the speakers were caked in so much crud I could not see the metallic grills. I ended up telling him his phone was disgusting and offered to clean it. I removed the case and carefully got rid of the debris sticking to the phone and noticed around the sides a million small scratches and chips exactly as your described. I was able to remove all of the debris within the speaker grills with Blu-Tack and then throughly cleaned the phone and case. The phone looked so much better in the end but it was still covered in superficial damage because he had neglected to clean it regularly.

After 10 day with naked iPhone 14 Pro...sharp edges are not comfortable to hold, screen is somehow to sticky and sliding finger is easier with spigen screen protector when your hands are not completely dry.
My last phone, iPhone X was super easy to hold and operate without case or screen protector, but iPhone 14 Pro is not designed to be used like that.
Apple silicone case for grip and spigen screen protector for easier moving your finger (and protection of corse) are perfect combo for me and one hand usage.

I like cases because of the material phones are made out of - they slip and slide, and i trust my phone case to be a little bit grippier than it, although it doesn't really hold up sometimes, so it's nice the case is hitting the ground instead of the camera/corners. I get a clear case - i do like the color of my phone, and I like seeing the logo and whatever spare piece of paper i want to shove in it for a period of time. I've learned my lesson, though-don't shove anything thicker than a paper in there, and don't layer it!

I've been extremely lucky when it comes to picking up damage on naked iPhones. 5 Months ago I purchased a new iPhone 14+. For the first time ever, I have lots of scratches and a few dents on the casing. I have no idea how because I'm always really careful. Anyway. I have sold that and put the money towards my new iPhone 14PM. For the first time I can remember, I now have a decent case and screen protector on my new iPhone. let's see how this goes!

I use the Apple Case. Clearly it isn’t working lol

I don’t even know when or how it happened. I grabbed the phone this morning and noticed that the camera area was broken, removed the case and saw the whole back cracked.

Thankfully it was only my phone from work

Nope, not for many years now. I think it ruins the look and the slim and comfy grip on my phone. I do have a protective skin from extreme skins on the back of the phone to reduce scratches.
I have never broken a phone, even if most of my phones has fallen down several times. I did however drown a couple of phones when I was younger, but a case can't protect the phone from that anyway.

Always an OtterBox Defender case for all of my iPhones. Since the 12 Pro Max I also use glass covers for the camera lenses, and have used glass covers for the screen since the iPhone 6S. Otterbox now has a MagSafe charge compatible version of the Defender case.

In addition to that I have a waterproof slip case I can slip the encased iphones into. You can easily operate your iPhone inside it even underwater. there is a tiny loss in touch screen sensitivity caused by the loose fit of the clear cover. but in my case I have a glass screen protector in place so I think a bare screen would be much better. I only use this slipcase when I am fishing just in case. This slip case is a good thing to have even if you don't encase your iPhones it is peace of mind if you get caught up in a real toad-choker rainstorm, did I mention fishing accidents.

Oh one more thing about the slip case. you can very easily fix a small float to it so if your iPhone gets dumped overboard it floats so you can retrieve it.

I've never used a case on any of my phones. However, I might look into one if I get the 15 PM.
There is this, You are carrying the best part of $2000 bucks worth of smartphone butt naked in a dangerous world of hard surfaces. I have covers for my test instruments, Pelican cases for my ham radios. bugout bags for antennas. and I am going to leave my iPhone "naked to the world" (Eric Burdon, and War 1970) nope! 😁

I pay for AppleCare+, so I can get a replacement if I break it. I've not needed to use it, though.
