I will just say that my iPhone 6s+, while it has been dropped a few times, has never been damaged. It still looks the same as when I got it - aside from fingerprints on the screen.

With my first two smartphones I did have to establish some rules for myself and one of the hardest things for me to learn was that the screen was going to get smudges. Better that then me dropping the phone because I tried to keep my fingers away from the screen.

I also don't use any device, big or small with just one hand. One-handed use is for me the fastest way for me to drop my phone. I've dropped my phone when using two hands! So, I don't try and be slick with one hand. In the long run it doesn't matter anyway because I've never mastered actually using my phone with one hand. I always end up holding it with my left and touching/swiping with my right.

But, I've already had to explain to my wife before how I dropped my phone with two hands. I will never hear the end of it if I have to explain that I dropped it because I was trying to one-hand it.
What do you mean keep fingers away from the screen? Isn’t that always unavoidable when using a touch screen phone?

Yeah modern phones are definitely not designed to be used one-handed, I have to keep reminding myself. Even holding (not using) my phone with one hand feels precarious, it’s so slippery feeling. I have the SE3 which has rounded edges, it’s like a bar of soap. But with the grippy case, I do feel like I can take calculated risks using my phone one-handed if I feel I’m in a safe/stable enough situation, plus the case is pretty protective if I do end up dropping it.
It’s a huge bummer for me that one-handed phones are a thing of the past, but what can you do. I know some people use things like pop sockets, but I’m finicky about any unnecessary bulk in my pocket (I would love nothing in my pockets if it was possible). Plus having to pop the socket out and in every time isn’t something I particularly want to do. So I’ve resolved to just using a grippy case and limiting my one-handed use. Although I may need to downgrade the level of grip. The case sticks to the fabric inside my pockets which makes it a little annoying to put in and take out the phone.
I really miss my naked small phone.

I got my first smartphone in 2009. That was an HTC Touch Pro which runs Windows Mobile 6.1. While the bezels of that phone are not thin by today's standards, compared to the Sanyo Katana which I had been using before that, they were very thin. My thumb and forefinger were all over the screen. I had to constantly keep wiping my fingerprints off the screen.

That led to me adjusting my grip from an overgrip to just holding on to the sides of the phone. When I did that, all of a sudden I started dropping the phone excessively. With a tank like the Touch Pro that didn't do much damage, but when I got the iPhone 5, the bezels had shrunk down even more. Now, with this sidegrip I'm starting to drop a ~$1000 phone.

That had to stop, so I forced myself back to the overgrip I was using before and made myself accept the fact that I was going to have fingerprints all over the screen. Those can be wiped off, even if it's annoying. Dropping my phone and fixing the damage that results from that would get expensive very quickly.

Bezels have only gotten thinner so my acceptance of fingerprints has been mandatory for me.

Don’t know if there’s something different with my fingers but I struggle to handle my iPhone 12 Pro without a case, feels vulnerable to being dropped.

I splashed out and bought the official Apple silicon case, found it great to begin with but after two years it started to disintegrate so not worth it long term. Would rather buy a cheap version 2 or 3 times over.

I have some good 3rd party cases from Spigen, Pitaka, Caudabe, etc

They are really good but there is always something missing, I can't put my finger on it, and I always end up going back to the Apple leather case in midnight.

Perfect fit and light and slim which is important for my tiny hands lol

I also have a couple of Apple silicone cases, and I use them once in a while for a touch of color, but most of the time it's the leather case.
It also seems like the silicone case is a bit thicker and heavier than the leather one.

The biggest trouble I had in the past and what caused me to go caseus maximus was the 3.5mm phone plug. all of the major gravity accidents were caused by earphones plugged into it. the cable would catch on something and if you were lucky it destroyed the earphones, if not, in my case, the iPod Touch, would fly off to a cracked screen. Thankfully I learned this lesson long before my first iPhone. What forever cemented my love of the OtterBox Defender case was my 6S+ I left it on the seat of the truck stepped out and the earphone cable caught on my coat and the iPhone came flying out to land face down on the cement sidewalk. I just knew my iPhone was ruined, picked it up and it was totally undamaged. This had to have been an intersession by Saint Vidicon.

My first iPhone was the iPhone 4 and I had read horror stories about the little water sensors that would turn pink and void your warranty if ANY water got on them at all. I used to order 3-packs of these cheap little rubber plugs for the 30-pin connector and the headphone jack. I was working in downtown Chicago every day at the time and got stuck out in the rain on the way to and from the train station a lot. I used to see people walking around out in the rain with their iPhones just using them like normal BEFORE the iPhone 7 came out with water resistance and I would always think, "Those are the people complaining on Macrumors about how Apple hardware is garbage".

Where I am from, iPhones are quite expensive, compared to the median salaries of people, so yes, I can't risk breaking my phone dropping it without a case.

I see people when I’m on vacation who don’t use a case and their phone looks like its been run over about three times. I judge them harshly. I use an Incipio Dual-Pro on my 13 Pro. I only take it off when I use the phone on a DJI Osmo.

I have a case from "Poetic" on my 11 Pro Max; wouldn't dream of not having a case. I see some of these phones people have and they look like Hulk stomped on them. Dirty, cracked glass, etc. Mine is pristine without even the tiniest nick for a reason.

My favorite case was the rugged rubber baby buggy bumper on the iPhone 4. Currently using the leather Apple case and magnetic wallet on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I can tell by the scars on the corners that I really wouldn’t want to go bare.

Yes, I use a silicon cover for my iPhone called the Panda cover. It provides excellent protection for my iPhone as its four corners are made of durable silicon, which safeguards the device in case of a fall.

Yes, with a screen protector, and I would love to use it without them, but I hate the idea of potentially scratching the phone. Admittedly I never drop my phone (I guess I am just very lucky) but given that phone glass is much more scratch prone nowadays for the sake of being more shatter resistant, I just can't carry my phone naked anymore... What I don't use are expensive cases, I always grab a cheap AliExpress one, as long as it covers the phone I'm fine, and that's why I am looking into using a skin like the dbrand ones (their new leather collection looks amazing!).

Had a work issued iPhone 5 years ago without a case that i dropped getting out of the truck and shattered the screen. Company policy was for me to pay for a replacement, so instead I purchased a chunky otter box to put phone in so the glass pieces would stop falling off. Used it till I switched departments and was given a new phone again. Lol

Ever since then I just buy a phone case right after buying an iPhone.

Always a case. A Otter case bought at the same time or before the new phone arrives. I don't take the new phone out of the box before the Otter case arrives. And I still agonize over the available colors and I could not tell you what color my phone is under the case. Also I only get the case that comes with a clip on for the belt. Never had a crack or a issue and the phone has gone flying more than once.

I use (and rotate through) super thin cases - and usually one or two Apple ones - during the first 5-7 months or so... usually the time I'm still "playing" with the new goodies and features; after that, it's naked. I always prefer the look and feel of the phone as it was built and intended to be interacted with (obviously there's a real need for cases for many people). I guess halfway through that initial year I revert to general phone usage, so I'm not pulling it out of pockets as often. Haven't had to replace any broken phones or cracked screens since my iPhone 4 parkour'd down some concrete steps in Japan. And if I do, I have Apple Care as part of the Upgrade Program. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I have a silver 12 Pro Max and haven’t used a case for a few years. It’s taken a few hard tumbles, including a 2 meter drop onto cement, and it’s fine. The stainless steel frame has scratches and the touch display has a couple that are deep enough to feel, but I’ve never cracked it nor had to pay for a repair (I have AppleCare+ just in case though).

I used to rely on cases all the time, but then every time I took my phone out of its case I was always taken aback by how nice it was. I finally decided that between AppleCare and modern displays, I’d rather use it sans case and enjoy it rather than coddling it.

That said, I do use a Peak Design case and strap anytime I go on risky shoots (eg, where the phone is dangling 100 meters off the ground), though that’s mostly to make sure I don’t lose it/drop it on anyone.

Unless you absolutely baby your phone, I think it's insane to go without a case. Yes, iPhones are gorgeous and all, but I wouldn't want to babysit it. If anything, grab a clear case!

I must be an insane baby sitter of my phone(s) then. I don't use cases and protecting my phone by the way I handle it and what I do with it has long since become a subsconscious thing. I don't have to focus on 'babying' it.

But this insane phone babysitter has several phones that are undamaged, unscuffed, unscratched and have no broken parts.

So, not using a case works for me. You may just be focusing on the work it takes to get to doing this subconsciously. A lot of case users would just rather leave that up to the case.

I never realized you could get to the point of doing that subconsciously. I thought you either did it (while thinking about it) or you didn’t. Now I know.

It just becomes reflexive - like anything else practiced over time.

After one week with a clear case (spigen liquid crystal, bought for a weekend outside with sail boat and mountain bike), I’m back caseless with my 14 PM.
