In the 25 years I've been doing this neither I or the person receiving the device complains about the arrangement even when I sell above used market value. 😀

All the PowerPC Macs and all but 1 of the Intel Macs I've used has been sold this way.

The last Intel Mac's waiting for a larger than iMac 24" before it gets liquidated too.
Oh I'm not arguing about condition. I totally get that.

But presumably, some part of the reason why people purchase an iPhone is because the device looks attractive. But then a case is put on the device - which covers it up.

So who enjoys the aesthetics of a pristine device if it's never seen (because it's inside a case)?

If you live in a high crime rate region you'd not even ask that question. 😉

Personally, I do not want to draw unwated attention to myself as it leads to people asking loans they'll never pay back.

Well, that's a reason. Thank you.

I think 'because the iPhones are so slick' is an assumption. It's not a fact, or at least it's just relative to different people. What may be slick to you (or slippery) may not be so to me. Some people who use cases like to describe the iPhone as a bar of wet soap.

Yet plenty of people who don't use cases don't drop their phones.

I've made two significant drops of phones before requiring repair or replacement. It was not because the phone was 'slick'. It was because I was not paying attention. In both cases I'd recently taken an antihistamine for a runny nose.
I never said they were slick to you or anyone else. They are to me. The smooth edges slide around in MY hands. So I case my iPhone for this reason. As I also said, if the texture ever gets to the point it doesn’t slide in MY hands I’ll go naked.

But thank for pointing out my experience may not be universal…I’m sure others were confused.

I was confused…so thanks for clarifying.

I've gone caseless for many years, I'm careful with my phone and it's very rare for me to drop it even on carpet or low to the ground. I treat it as the $1k piece of tech it is, not like my keys or wallet that I throw around.

However with the 15PM I'm getting a cheap case at the start since I'm going on vacation with it and don't want to risk dropping it when out of the country.

I find that if you use it right away & put it in your pocket, like as soon as you peel off the stickers off the screen, you'll probably not want a case. Slide it across a table as soon as you unbox it to get that scaredy cat fear out of scratching your brand new iPhone lol
I find that sliding it across the table is my biggest issue- it slides super easily. Slides off my car seat, the arm of the sofa, out of my hand, the dash, pretty much anything that isn't completely flat and/or not moving.

I prefer caseless as we get these super slim gorgeous phones, but then wrap them in fat ugly cases from Amazon, or Otterboxes—heck even Apple cases and I’m not even just talking about Apple; Samsung, Pixel’s etc. I’ve gone case-less with a work Pixel 6A for the longest time, and now a work iP 14 and never had an issue. With iPhone though I’d only take the risk if it has AC+. Also, am I the only one who hates the frosted glass backs as I find the glossy backs give more grip? The frosted back is mad slippery.
Work gave me the fattest Otterbox case on the market with my iPhone 11. They said I was responsible if anything happened, and it's not the case. I despised that case and didn't use it. Two months later I broke both the front and back glass 😭

This always strikes me as odd…

The phone is cased so a 'pristine' phone is sold or handed down. So it can be cased again.

At the end, you have a pristine phone that is ready to be recycled.

It's like Schrödinger's cat…no one know what's inside the case until the case is removed when the phone gets recycled - and it's pristine at that point. The recycling machine then rips that pristine phone apart in moments.

Aside from protecting any internal damage, who benefits here?

If the phone is being sold at the end of its initial use, it fetches considerably more if it’s not scratched or cracked. The original owner wins.

I don’t see the benefit of not putting a case on my own phone and appreciate you get whatever satisfaction you get from not having a case on yours. You like using an iPhone without a case and someone like me hates it and gets no satisfaction whatsoever. There are plenty of advantages depending on what the person wants to get out of their choice.

I treat mine like a $1K piece of tech, too; that's why it's in case. I suppose it all boils down to lifestyle.

I mentioned in a reply that aside from protecting the phone from damage, what was the point.

You are stating protecting the phone from damage so resale value is much better. I get that. But what I wanted to understand, was aside from that.

Why am I asking that?

I could put a scratched up, dinged and dented phone that still had a good screen and rear glass inside a case. How would anyone know? Why do they even care if the device still works? If it's being sold it's likely going right back in to a case.

So, if pristine condition matters for a better sale then it means the aesthetic of the phone matters. And if the aesthetic of the phone matters then it would seem it ONLY matters if the device is going to be seen outside of the case. At all other times, aesthetic does not seem to matter - because if it did, there would be no case covering it up.

It's a strange thing about case users I just don't get.

Now the other user provided a reason (being targeted for theft).

So the question is…if you get satisfaction from having a device in a case then why does it being in good condition when you sell it matter? The case would be hiding any damage. But it does matter, because you want the maximum you can get for it.

So what I can gather from all this is that the aesthetic of the iPhone doesn't matter to you at all. But since it DOES matter to someone BUYING the phone it's important to you for that one brief moment where an exchange of money for a phone occurs.

I'm not trying to fight with you, it just seems to me that case users have a bunch of other reasons behind why they case their phones beyond the obvious. And some of them just seem to be conditional in my opinion.

It does.

I basically sit in front of a computer all day at home. My devices sit on my desk. My primary phone goes in the cupholder in the car and if I'm out at other places I put it in specific spots there.

No case.

But if I had a physical job it might be different, but I probably would still not use a case. I'd just use a different phone. I already take my 6s Plus on my morning walks. My primary is an 11 Pro Max, but I take the 6s Plus because if anything happens I don't want damage to my 11 PM. I'm willing to sacrifice the 6s Plus.

I would love to go case-less, but I find holding the phone feels too slippery without one. Perhaps the new finish will feel different. We know that fingerprints will no longer be an issue as the frame and the entire body of the phone are flat/matte.

I have always used a case, but this year I am hoping I can be caseless. My iphone 13 pro max felt so big and heavy , it was weighing my pockets down. Im a phone only gal, no purse, it was tugging my jeans pocket down. And at work i have to carry 1 up to 3 work iphones, in my uniform pockets while running all over the hospital. So i traded down to iphone 13 in June . BUT I miss the big screen , the camera and everything else! So I ordered the new pro max , but Im hoping I can go caseless. I do worry about it being slippery, sliding across a table. Maybe a skin? (Never tired) Caseless would be nice and no screen protector either! But I worry about resale too, and scratches etc. Debating about the extra $200 for Applecare which ive never had. That 13 pro max felt like a brick in a case but once i took it off to do the trade in I was like its not so bad naked!

I used to be one of the folks that would end my iPhone cycle with 3-4 cases, these days im down to just using one case which is usually not on when im in the house. I only use a case at the gym and if I'll be out for a long day. when I purchased my first nexus phone I remember getting out the car and hearing it slap to the floor as I forgot it was on my lap, ever since then Im always aware of where I put my phone. screen protecter + the occasional case and im good to go.

Main advice: don’t put it in the front pocket of your scrub! Avoiding this, I’m using my 14 PM caseless without problems during all my shifts, OPs and OTs 😉

You’re right, the aesthetics of the iPhone mean very little to me. The only part that is ever seen is the screen and the camera part. I use a case as you know, because I tend to drop my phone from time to time and I use it to photograph things at work in not so forgiving environments. I don’t like the feel of a case-less iPhone, and find them slippery and less than pleasant to hold. A case provides grip in that instance. I do share a similar opinion to the other poster too where I like the phone to be less obvious to other people, some who may want to snatch it etc. I use a case because it maintains as much value as possible for when I sell the phone or if I decide to give it to a family member it is not shattered and damaged. I can’t afford to keep replacing screens and back glasses and I’m sure if I took AppleCare out, they would quickly have an issue with me making a claim every month, not to mention the excess I’m have to pay which is around the same price I paid for my Caudabe case.

There’s nothing not to get about the vast majority of iPhone users that choose to put cases on their phones. I’d imagine some of the reasons I have given are relatable to others. As I said, you get a satisfaction out of going case-less with your phone, and that is something myself and others either can’t relate to or could not due to how the phone is used. I don’t have a ritual for taking care of my phone, it’s a tool for me and gets chucked on the side and used well. My kids play on it and I have no fear, nor would I want to be that parent who deprives them over an everyday item. We all have our reasons for using or not using cases.

Makes perfect sense, thanks.

I would just say (and I think we probably discussed this earlier), when it comes to my device and kids - I gave my kids a different device to play with when they were little. I guess by now I've reasoned out for myself that I'd rather sacrifice an older device than use a case or let them play with mine.

But what you say totally squares. Thank you again.

It also really helps with trade-in value!

I loved holding my Jet Black 7 naked, it felt really nice. Smooth but with just the right amount of grip. And even if I dropped it, the aluminum finish was sturdy as heck.

I would love to do the same with my 14PM but I have it in an Apple leather case. I tried again last night to hold it naked, but it’s unwieldy and slippery, and the cameras make the weight off-balance. Combined with the sharp edges, it’s not comfortable to hold for me. But with the soft leather case on, I immediately feel a sense of relief and ease. I don’t have to white-knuckle my grip. Just hold it lightly and the grip does the rest.

Wish I could go caseless with this phone, cause it really is gorgeous. But for me, it’s so much more comfortable with the case on.
