I found a inch and a half deep scratch on my iPhone 5 screen once. I only found out about it because I could feel it with my fingernail.
To see it, I had to stand on a chair and hold the phone close to strong light. And it only became visible when I contorted my upper body in such a way as to get my head into an appropriate position. All while trying to balance on the chair and not fall flat on my back.

First and last time I made any attempt to notice scratches on my screen.
I envy you! Every time I use my 8 Plus I see the scratch, catching the light like a prism.

iPhone 5S: no case.
iPhone 7 Plus: no case.
iPhone 12 Pro: leather case for the last four years and it's biting the dust, just in time ahead of the 16 Pro.
iPhone 16 Pro: think it'll be no case again. might kinda dig how the natural titanium wears over time, honestly.

Side note: no screen protectors, ever. The glass nowadays is pretty darn tough against scratches and cracks from falls. I frequently see people claiming that their shattered screen protector prevented their actual screen from shattering, but...I don't think it does? The glass on protectors is far weaker than the glass on the phone itself (millions of R&D money went into Ceramic Shield), so of course it'll shatter while the phone's screen doesn't. A case will do the heavy lifting of preventing shattering, not a screen protector... right? maybe my physics knowledge is wrong though. any physicists around here? 👀
I'm no physicist, but I can tell you I've lost track of how many screen protectors my wife has shattered, while her screen itself is still perfect. I can also say that prior to using screen protectors, we made at least 3 trips to the Apple Store with her older phones to get screens replaced after she cracked them. She's absolutely brutal on her phones.

Sure, a case will help in many situations - but not when the impact is directly on the screen.

LOL. That particular phone got replaced about two iPhone 5's ago. :D Battery swelling. My current iPhone 5 is like the fourth one now.

And, the 5 stopped being my primary in February 2015. Which was three phones ago, the 11 PM being my primary now. :)

Haven't noticed any scratches on my 11 PM.

I still have my 5, I loved that phone. The screen is discolouring around the edges, but the battery isn't too old in it, and if I remembered which box I packed it in, and charged it up, it'd still run fine. My wife has my iPhone 8 Plus for the purposes of Find My.. which we used more when I was riding my motorbike. I don't have to look at it too much these days. I'm rather happy with my 14.

I do actually need to find which box my 1st gen iPod touch is in. The battery started swelling in that, and I don't want to leave it too long.

Wife's old 6s, and two 6th Gen iPads (the one in the case, being my wife's).

If you leave your iPod discharged for long enough the swelling will go down. Both the iPhone 5's you see here sat in my garage for two years to reduce swelling (and both work fine). I'd have replaced them (again), but Apple won't touch them anymore.

PS. Phone taking the pictures is my 11 PM. Sits right in the business card holder above the keyboard.

Also, you may notice - except for my wife's iPad, no cases. :D

Yes to case and screen protector. My 5 year old XR that I am replacing with 16Pro still looks like OEM condition in spite of a couple of small drops that might have cracked the screen. Funny story: many years ago I had a Galaxy S3... actually still have it... and also used a case. When I got a new phone I said what the heck I'll take the case off now while I was still using it as a wifi device and as a drone interface. Dropped it the first week and cracked the screen. Bottom line is that no matter what they say or how "gorilla" these things purport to be, they are simply too fragile when they take a corner hit, even from not very high.

My favorite case on the Galaxy S3 was UAG. That thing took a beating and looked great.

Pretty amazing you remember that detail! I sure don't. I have a thin opaque Spigen silicone case on my XR and it has worked perfectly for those few little drops.

I love your setup!

Hopefully I can get to the place where I can set up my G4 Power Mac (Sawtooth), and my '08 iMac again.

My best friend has a Samsung Galaxy S24. He uses a case but has no screen protector and he isn’t particularly careful with his phone either. A few weeks ago I noticed a large superficial gouge on his screen that was around 3 inches long. It looks awful and it goes to show that even modern high quality gorilla glass is still easy to damage in normal everyday situations.

That’s why I always use a case and screen protector as one unlucky accident can ruin your phone forever.

And I call BS. Drop it on its corner on concrete and it will break the glass. And titanium is nothing special when it comes to hardness and will scratch if it hits concrete. So, BS again that the case has no scratches if he really dropped it on concrete. If he dropped it as much as he said he did it was on carpet or else just extremely lucky... which I suppose is possible with so many millions of iPhones out there.

That's great if you use your phone like he does. I don't.

I’d like to. I’m careful with my stuff, but with something I handle as much as my phone, there’s just no way. It’s going to hit the ground on concrete or asphalt at least once a year. So I buy a nice case that’s fairly low profile. It’s a reasonable compromise for me.

I've always used a case for my iPhone and will be waiting for Rimowa to launch their 16 Pro case. I am using an Amazon clear case in the meantime.

I learned my lesson when I had my phone on my lap and got out my car.

I use a case (drop my phone too often) but I don't use screen protectors. All the issues sound like such a hassle: screen isn't as clear, rainbow effect, black borders (to prevent rainbow effect) cover a little of the screen, bubbles, dust in between, etc. I like nothing between my finger and my screen. Perfectly clear, no lag. Haven't had to replace a screen ever, and been an iPhone user since 2008.

(Probably just jinxed myself)

Does it make any difference if you’re on the iPhone upgrade pro? Like, are you less likely to use case + protection?

I put the AmFilm screen protector on immediately after removing the Apple shipping screen protector so I didn't even need to clean or dust the screen. Perfect. These screen protectors have gotten really good. It also fits perfectly with Spigen clear silicone case. I tried the Apple clear MagSafe case and but was a little slippery and hard for my liking. I'll keep it as a spare.

Are the buttons still hard to press on the Apple clear case?
