Remains to be seen if the new phone is ~$1500 CAD better for me.

That it won’t be. You’d just have to stomach the price and tell yourself exactly why you spent that amount.

For me, it was a combination of lowest ever price on the 12 mini, the time (I would have upgraded next year anyway) and the display - when I saw it in person, I just realised how much better the contrast would be for my father’s old eyes. I just got one for myself along with because of the price and because I knew father wouldn’t like it if I kept old tech and he used new (I’m his child, he knows my fascination with tech).

Ok I feel pretty stupid posting this, but bear with me. Does anyone else feel kinda sad/weird after upgrading their iPhone?

Just got my 13 Pro yesterday, and it replaced my XS Max which I had 3 years (longest I’ve ever kept a phone). I don’t know if it’s the fact that I kept that phone the longest and was so used to it. Or maybe it was that I didn’t try iOS 15 until I got my 13 Pro, and maybe because I got a new phone and new version of iOS all at once, it was too overwhelming, but I just keep feeling like, “this is not my phone.”

It’s stupid because I transferred over straight from my XS Max, so it moved everything over the exact same. And I know this is a tool, and I’m not someone who gets emotional attachments to objects either, but idk, I feel kinda sad and weird using this new phone. It doesn’t feel like it’s really my phone or for me. I’ve upgraded my phones many times in the past before and never had this feeling. It’s not that I have buyer’s remorse either.

Please tell me I’m not the only one and that I’m not going crazy. 😅
Nope, you are NOT the only one. I recall way back trading in my old 4 AND 5 to Best Buy for a Gift Card way back in 2014 or '15?

I felt that way especially trading in my XS Max last Nov. (That phone was darn good to me, trusty device). Kind of hated trading this in..but $ back to my payment on 12 Pro Max.

As for 12 Pro Max trade in a few weeks ago, ...not much regret to be honest, short lived, $$ was too good...but I'll miss the color. That's about it.

It is a little strange. "Why do I have slight regret getting rid of this electronic device!??" 😂🤷🏻‍♂- we love it when it works...and wanna throw it out the window when it's buggy.

Still odd how we become connected, literally to these devices.
In the end, $ for the devices to buy more stuff just makes sense.

You’re definitely not alone. Based on the variety of posts, some get it and others don’t. I’m that way with cars and iPhones. I don’t like to get rid of the old ones no matter how much I like the new ones. If I can sell my car to a friend who will take good care of it I feel better. For the iPhone I just think of all the great photos and videos I took with that iPhone that I’ll still have on the new iPhone. I’m a Star Trek fan so I tend to think of all of my photos, videos, data and settings as the phone’s katra. The phones change but the katra remains. Just ignore the unhelpful responses. They could have just said nothing. If you can feel sentimental about things like a wedding ring or something your kid made for you it doesn’t seem a stretch to understand someone’s attachment to an iPhone IMHO.

Threads like this always remind me to slow down when new products are announced and released.

Taking a longer view -- waiting until they are out and you can go see them in person usually leaves me with relief that I didn't rush into something just due to Apple's massive marketing/spin machine.

The way they hype everything can leave one really in a FOMO zone -- when in reality, the products almost never match up with the amount of press they generate and the over hype from Apple themselves.

They are usually good products -- but almost never the life changing over done orgasmia that Apple portrays

Wholeheartedly agree. Like I mentioned previously, my 8 serves me well even today. I jumped and got two 12 minis first because of the price discounts and second because of the screen quality improvements that my old man may particularly benefit from (better contrast). Knowing him, I had to buy one for myself as well so he would keep his without any issues. Otherwise, I would have replaced both our 7 and 8 next year.
