I always compare with auto brightness off

But this photo demonstrates it plenty! Awesome!

Looks like your 9.7 may have been a bit sub par though acceptable, but that 10.5 indeed looks nice!

Maybe I'm just traumatized from three units with yellow edge at bottom, but the bottom looks ever so slightly darker which i could totally cope with vs the yellow strip (which i dont see on yours!)

Did you ask to purchase a demo unit? :p just kidding

To be honest, with my experience of the display lottery, my 10.5 is pretty much as good as I'd expect tone-wise, and from a panel with backlights firing from one edge only.

It's always a problem inspecting a screen in an Apple store, with their perfect lighting.... and I do believe they cherry-pick the best units for display :)

I do too personally. I think they set aside display and review units and the general public gets what they get- some good some ok most unacceptable to the discerning eye.

What two letters does your serial start with?

All three bum units of mine started DM

i dont think it can be traced to serial numbers...

that being said - while I dont expect Apple to inspect every screen for the slightest uneven tint... do NOT ship units with dead pixels. my first iphone 6s+ came with a black dead pixel in the middle of the screen...

Yeah it's there, it's quite faint but I can see it. Reminds me a lot of the Surface Pro 3 yellow stripe issue, but not as pronounced.

Screen also clicks (definitely the adhesive strips not fully bonded) when I push gently on the bottom bezel, and the LCD ripples/distorts there too. It's likely this is just the cost of slimmer bezels.

Since I went through a ridiculous number of Air 2's with colour shifts left to right, bottom half yellow, blue band along the edges, I'm considering this a "win" and keeping it.

Pretty annoying though.

I don't think it's due to the slimmer bezels. My first-gen 12.9 Pro had the same issue and I got a replacement at an Apple store. The replacement (my current device) has been fine from day one. The screen just feels more solid all around. I'm thinking about picking up a 10.5 Pro this weekend but all these posts make me a little nervous.

I swear my eyes are playing tricks now. It seems like a decent screen however does seem warmer on the bottom or bottom right. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't let the fear of a bad unit/panel overwhelm me out of giving it a try. It's always been a lottery, I think the odds are just unfavorable considering I had three in a row, with same problem same area

But I also wouldn't go far down the rabbit hole to get a decent one, unless you want to or you're coming from an ancient iPad and are compelled to upgrade this cycle

You can only get a good unit if you try! First shot nTB I nailed it, I still maintain I may have the best panel of anyone on this board who has posted theirs, and the MBPs are supposedly an absolute frustrating nightmare of swaps to deal with.

Same with my Pro 9,7 but I had a few bum units before (I think 2 or 3)

7+ I'm a little nit picky of but still have same first unit I tried, though there was no stock for months anyways so if it was horrendous I woulda been SOL.

I had one crappy 7, and one that was comically bad before going back to Plus (tried 4.7" temporarily, not my size period, so the crappy displays helped push me over the edge but been on 5.5" since 6+ now)

Of all products, I think iPads are the one that are least PITA. Tons of stock, relatively no IRL hype, no potential ties to payment plans/messy terms, etc. (though I pay full retail for my unlocked iPhones)

Id think laptop swaps are the biggest headache, or bulky 27" iMacs to haul around

Thats A LOT of money to put on one's credit card multiple times, and to not get some raised eyebrows on burning through expensive inventory

I'm picking mine up later, what is the best way to test this? Is there an app or just open a blank white page.

I think a white page is good

Or google.com

The bottom grey bar can show off the yellow with relative ease

Also settings app in landscape. The gap between between about and the list of items and edge is perfect

For me all three units showed the disparity there

I can't return mine until Monday so I'll be interested to see if the tint goes away by then. But... I've had varoius defects on tablet/phone/computer screens over the years and I've never seen any of them dissapear with time. I just think there nature of LCD backlight manufacture and technology means it is always going to be a lottery.
My problem is that I love photography and have very keen eyes for colour and accuracy, so I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to screens. And I'd gladly buy a returned open unit from apple if I could inspect it and confirm it had a uniform screen.

It took me 4 tries to get a good iPad 4 and I remember thinking at the time that I wished they would sell me one of those demos with perfect screens they always have in the stores.

There's an app called "Screen Lite" that is free and can be used to set the screen a full colour (white, black, red, green, blue). It can also display "noise" on the screen.

Edit: Another good way to see screen colour shifts is to run iBooks with the sepia colour set

You're right. I will probably take the plunge. With my 12.9 Pro, I ordered from Verizon. I had very little time to use it at first. By the time I noticed the yellow stripe it was past Verizon's return window and they insisted I would have to send it in for repair. I ended up swapping it out at an Apple store but the closest one is 2 1/2 hours away. Luckily, we were headed to Houston for a couple of days and they have several stores there to choose from. I'm going to try to pick one up at a Verizon store this weekend.

I've been lucky. I've had all iPhones except the original and I only had a 4s for about a week before I decided to switch to Android for a year. I never had an issue with any of them. I've owned a first-gen iPad, iPad 4, and now a 12.9 Pro, and the only one I had to swap out was the Pro.

The bottom does look a little off but it looks dimmer there

If it's a yellow strip you should be able to see it

I'd probably be happy with that one (again if pic is representative) if it's just mild brightness variation personally but I'd have to actually see it :D

Yellow edge was more eye catching to me in landscape

I'd class that as a very good panel from the pic, based on what you could end up with

Yep always a matter of perception but also tolerances

Glad I'm not the only person not just wanting a good screen for the $ paid, but a good screen period (its what I'm looking at nearly all day every day)

I also wonder if they're using multiple suppliers on these 10.5 or if it's s just lottery for one manufacturer

GOLDEN RULE- if you got one that you are doubting a little, try another while keeping the first if possible, and keep the one you prefer.

If its horrendous just send it back/exchange it right away but..

I think you can never go wrong with that rule, assuming your cc limit allows for it

looks fine to me

Yeah I tend to agree,

--

I'd prefer even a subtle gradient color change/multi tint that isn't extreme, to a yellow strip I saw on 3x 10.5"

The yellow strip just looks like I'm 100% using a Foxconn whipped together product where the adhesive hasn't dried

The best way is to not test for it at all.

Agreed,

Ignorance is complete bliss on this one,

Just make sure YOU are happy with it, before the return policy is up. Thats the main thing that matters,

For sure .... I'd rather a consistent slightly-yellow screen, rather than one that shifts through the rainbow!

Thanks guys. I think I could end up something with a lot worse if I try to exchange it. I think there is some yellow on the very bottom or side in landscape but it's really faint. I took another shot and landscape shot. Anyone have a good shot of what a more apparent yellow band looks like. I'm thinking mine is good and if I never read this thread I would have started checking haha. Although perhaps with true tone on it was slightly worse. Oh well I always appreciate the advice here. Thanks again for the help

No the space between brightness slider (and the list of things below it) and the edge,

Remains consistent in color in landscape (in relation to the background color outside of those white rectangles)

You definitely do NOT have it. On all three units, a vertical yellow strip filled the gap. I think thats the most obvious tell... Anyways, Congrats!

(That right edge in landscape is the touchID edge, right?)

If you didnt want a 10.5" anymore, and I suddenly became foaming at the mouth for one to upgrade into,

Maybe I'd take this unit off your hands :D haha

What are first two of serial# out of curiosity?

I dont think serial# and panel can be correlated, its pure lottery, but still I'm wondering

Haha Thanks! First two of serial number is DL

If I had the freedom to pick the unit I wanted, I'd opt for a DL model.

Especially since Ive had three bum DM's, and a few people have reported good DL's on here.

Couldn't hurt, at minimum.

But I still think its a lottery relatively, Ive had "good serial #'s" before for still bum screens

(Fwiw my good screen 9.7 starts DM)

Whilst true tone is great, I find at night in a darkish room, it can look very pink if you look at the screen at any kind of angle

That's another thing I wanted to ask @topdog9000

Off axis, does your panel look sorta pink? Without truentone on of course (Like iPad flat on lap, and look at it at an angle)

If so, I still wouldn't bother swapping (especially if you dont have another non-10.5 to compare to)

But I'm just curious if this is characteristic to all panels, including the good ones like yours, or if its something thats a red flag of the poopy ones
