Want to share my experience with getting on the LG 32GQ950-B - 144hz, 10bit, HDR, stable vsync.
Connected to Macbook Pro 16 M1 Pro.

I tested:
- FYRVW USB C to DisplayPort Cable 8K from Aliexpress
144hz, 10bit, HDR, stable vsync, works perfectly! But I needed to use for the laptop HDMI input on the monitor, to have my PC always connected by DP. To have 160hz and G-sync enabled

So I started trying to get it...
- FYRVW Type C to HDMI 2.1 cable from Aliexpress with VMM7100
! Before applying custom EDID had a weird issue with colors.
By editing EDID I got 120-144hz 10bit. But had vertical tearing in the middle of the screen with 120hz, and left 1/3 with 144hz.
! After coming from work, where I use a different monitor, didn't get vertical tearing, but after a few monitor reconnects by switching to PC, it returns always.
Decided to update the firmware and bricked it instantly. Checked all the possible firmware here, but nothing helped. The seller wasn't able to provide the original firmware, the backup firmware is giving an error.
So I have now a good cord to use it to hang on it something 😅

- Maxonar USB C to HDMI Cable 8K, 48Gbps, Type C to HDMI 2.1 (VMM7100)
Again by editing EDID, I got 120-144hz 10bit. But had the same vertical tearing in the middle of the screen with 120hz, and left 1/3 with 144hz.
! Also after coming from work, where I use a different monitor, didn't get vertical tearing, but after a few monitor reconnects by switching to PC, it returns too.
Decided to update the firmware and bricked it too 🥲
Checked all the possible firmware here, but nothing helped again.

- Cable Matters 48Gbps USB C to HDMI 2.1 Adapter with 100W Charging (201428)
I decided to check the adapter this time. It came with the 7.02.120 firmware already.
4k 60hz 8bit only. EDID edit didn't help at all, at least on my level of knowledge about it... Updated to the firmware from the Cable Matters page. Didn't help as well.
Tried the firmware from sevenarth post, and even without the Better Display got 144hz! But only 8-bit and the same vertical tearing again.
Then noticed a message from austinmrs that turning the monitor off and on fixes vertical tearing. And it really fixed it!
Now left to get only 10bit. Saw many messages about the 10-bit fix in MacOS Sonoma.

Just updated to it and got 144hz, 10bit, HDR, VSYNC, and the right colors! (important for my work)
Everything works perfectly now! HDR mode needs color calibration, will do it soon.

So suggestions:
- edit EDID first
- update your laptop to Sonoma, might fix some of the issues
- turn your monitor off and on if getting vertical tearing. Changing input didn't help in my case
- use firmware not for your cables very careful! In my case, firmware for CableMetters VMM7100 chip bricked two cables from other manufacturers.

Original and sevenarth firmware EDID exports are in the attachments. As I understand the main differences on these two pages and in the Add new DisplaID block section.

Hello,

I bought the CM adapter 201388-a and cable 201362-a, both with VMM7100

I tried both with the VMM7100 USB-C > HDMI firmware from OP and with the firmware from this video

I tried to flash the firmware on Parallels on my mac and on a windows desktop pc with usb c but not DP alt mode
(I can also test on a surface book 2 but not yet)

nothing worked and i can only have 4k 10bit 60hz on my base mac mini m2

Did I missed something ? do I need to downscale to 8bit ? (and how to do that ?)

I asked CM for their custom firmware, hope it will work
ok so I just used a different usb port and now i have 120hz

But no VRR correct? You mentioned VSYNC.

Right, I mentioned vsync, because on some cables it was working unstable, and was failing the test...

About VRR, if you mean to select a refresh rate range like 48-144hz.
It was possible to see this option in system settings by enabling the "V. Sync Polarity (+)" in EDID (check the screenshot).
This option option appears or disappears while doing some tests, after modifying exactly this parameter...
I can't say that exactly this parameter was responsible for it, but in my case, it was.

With the current adapter, this option is enabled in the EDID, but I don't see it to select.
And have no idea why :)

Ya I am able to get the same but can't get VRR to work through an adapter. Directly plugged into my M2 Macbook Pro, it works as it should.

Can anyone confirm if this cable works?

Also to clarify, the firmware posted in the OP is brand agnostic right? Same file for all brands based on the chipset? Just concerned as some have posted about bricking their cable thats why.

And does the Usb C to HDMI length matter in getting full 4k120hz RGB 10 bit signal? Because most of this brand sell 1m upto 3 m cables

Anyone run into any issues with the CableMatters USB-C to HDMI adapter where the MacBook will detect the display but the display won't detect the MacBook? I have to keep replugging in the adapter to get it to work. Considering buying the cable and trying the firmware flash.

Only Adapter and Cable where listed in OP are tested and does work 100%.
In the OP there all information u need for better understanding in Dock support.
If u will test another Adapters and Dock u can test and report if its works.

VMM7100 is the way u have to go and best with the modded firmware.

"Oui. La Station d’accueil Belkin F4U097 (optimisé par le chipset Intel® Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3)"

Seems like it's a Titan Ridge based dock, I'm gonna try the DP => HDMI dongle from the 1st page and report here !

I only get 4:2:2 since i update to Sonoma 23A344 when using 2 Displays !!

Can someone confirm that using 2 Displays over different TB4 native ports on M1 Max does break 4k@120hz RGB 4:4:4 ?

@stevemr123 did u know something about this ?

For people with a Dell WD19TB and an LG OLED C2, yes 4K/120 works through adapter plugged into dock but my audio control gets all wonky. How are you dealing with Audio to monitor/speakers? Thanks!

@zucram ?

I think I fixed it. I plugged the adapter into the DISPLAY port part. It needs to be in the lightning/charging port part. I use EQMac for it for anyone else that comes across.

has anyone been able to fix the flickering issue? I have a Samsung Odyssey Ark and I, for the life of me, cannot seem to solve this problem. I've restored the CableMatters adapter multiple times, as well as having tried several different brands and lengths of HDMI cables.

Do you guys know if the cable doesn't work properly on Windows, will it work on a Mac too? For example, I have the UGreen 15850 8k 60hz cable with the VMM7100 chip. On a Windows laptop, it displays a maximum of 4k 60hz 10-bit. After the firmware update, it only reaches 4k 30hz, and no other firmware can bring it back. The interesting thing is that the NVIDIA Control Panel doesn't reject the 4k 120hz resolution. It successfully applies it, and the laptop recognizes it as a monitor. I can even drag windows to it, but it's just a black screen. I have an LG C2 TV, and I've tried all the HDMI inputs and different settings, but nothing seems to work. If someone knows something about it, could you please share? Thanks.

EQ Mac is now acting up, haha it needs to be reconnected every time. Maybe be a MAC OS Sonoma issue. Any other FREE options people recommend to control their speakers through mac audio volume controls?

The Firmware is only for MacOS, using an Adapter with the modded Firmware breaks Windows usage.

Hello guys, I have a question about DP to USB-C. Unfortunately, I can't get a 10BIT OUTPUT at all.
It is always just 8 + 2Bit output. Even when I try to change the EDID via AW EDID Editor, I can get HDR checkbox to appear and then the 10BIT output is working, however whole desktop and other softwares are really washed out.
Does the M1/M2 support 10BIT output via DP to USB-C?

Hi, I just got the CM Usb-c to HDMI male cable, and I have the same issue with my MacBook Air M1, I can never get the 120Hz to work even if listed as an option, my LG C2 stays black.

I can get 60Hz 4k HDR - but when I click on 120Hz it also shows no display on the LG C2... I've sent a message to CM but would love some help if you found a solution. I've used this FW: VMM7100 - the flash went well and updated it to version 7.02.112 the chip ID is VM7100 version A1.

FYI, this works like a charm with the SwitchFlux USB-to-HDMI 8K cable on Amazon. (It has the VMM7100 in it.)

Used my old MBP 15" from 2016 (TouchBar FTW!!) to flash and it succeeded first-try. Connected the cable to my M1 Max and boom! 4K@120hz on my Odyssey Ark 55"! Buttery smooth. Love it! (Thing gets nice and toasty tho! Literally too hot to hold.)

Here's a link to the 6' cable on Amazon US. It's currently selling for $22 bc of Prime Days, but it's normally $28 with a $6 coupon so even if you miss the Prime deal, you should still be able to snag it for the same price.

CM USB-C to Male-HDMI Adapters with VMM7100 does not work, this is also not listet in the OP..
Only the short one with USB-C to Female-HDMI does work!
