Hey, it is sad to read that Sonoma has destroyed something. That's the reason why I hate Apple quite often: The compatibility with third party devices... I mean - we do not have any Hackintosh - it's a original Mac...

Anyway: You describe that only HDR should be broken, but I do not have 4:4:4 anymore, but 4:2:2 when I activate 2160p120 8-bit.

Furthermore, the sound is not working for me either.

VRR is also not available.

I do not use BetterDisplay anymore. Would it help with my problems?

Thanks!

(LG C1 with MacBook Pro M1 Max and the flashed Cable Matters Dongle)

Really Nice, I will contact CM Technical to get an Firmware fix for that.

It would be great if you could talk to them for a fix @AironMan!

Until then, in the latest BetterDisplay v2.2.3 there is some improved the VMM7100 support.

  • The app now auto-detects the presence of the device so no tricky Terminal commands are required.
  • The USB communication was rewritten (in Swift) so it should be more stable. I published the source code here: https://github.com/waydabber/vmm7100reset
  • You can use the Tools menu to reset the device any time and reconnect displays as well:
Screenshot 2024-02-16 at 10.48.44.png
  • I added an option to `Reinitialize this display on Unlock` - if this selected and the device is detected, an additional option appears to reset the VMM7100 as well. This should automate the entire process on unlock:
Screenshot 2024-02-16 at 10.49.39.png
  • You can define a keyboard shortcut to reset the device and reconnect displays:

On 14.2.1 with an Anker wm7100 flashed adaptor, I have working audio and RGB 10 bit in HDR... however this only works with the laptop open. Clamshell will force 4:2:2... any ideas?

Hi guys. Thanks for this thread. Unfortunately it doesn´t worked for me.
My setup:
- Cable Matters Adapter 201388-A = VMM7100 (flashed with firmware 7.02.112 on a PC)
- the recommend AmazonBasics HDMI Cable
- MBP Pro 16" (2021) with M1 Pro
- LG UltraFine (add. monitor via USB-C/Thunderbolt)
- LG TV OLED42C27LA

TV connected directly over HDMI works, but only with 60Hz.
When I connect with the CM HMDI Adapter, the TV shows "checking HDMI X", but nothing happens. No connection.
The adapter is shown in the settings:
https://share.cleanshot.com/W1VYMM21

Any idea what I have done wrong?

I have also tried another 8K cable which works with a PC on the LG TV at 120Hz.

But no picture with both cables on the MacBook via the CM adapter.
Could it be that the adapter is broken?

Hi! Thank you for all the work on this! I am looking into buying the CableTime cable to connect my M1 Pro MBP to a S90C Samsung TV. What I am trying to is play games (on geforce now) at 4k 120fps in HDR. I am on Sonoma 14.3.1.

After reading this thread I am still confused about one thing: Is HDR fully broken by the new updates or does it still work in other scaling options?

If the other scaling options work with HDR 4:4:4, will it affect my gaming experience in any way?

After a nice contact with CM support, everything is now working.

I installed the "old" firmware again and then the latest firmware on the adapter.

Is this for when you wake your Mac(Book) with no external signal? Been out of it for a while, but it's what I encounter sometimes when I wake my MacBook Pro 2021

I installed the firmware posted earlier today and it worked! I only get YCBCR420 8b 3L6, however. Is this expected?

U have to switch to 60hz then to 120hz back. Then u will get YCBCR 4:4:4 8b 4L8 SDR but this is also really bad. HDR with HiDPI is still not work.

Are the standby problem fixed on your side? Does anybody else can confirm that this new firmware does not work good in case of used data lines ? @stevemr123

Really good news guys! I got an CableMatters Hub with USB-C PD, HDMI, 1Gbit Ethernet, 2x USB-A 3.0 that can be directly flashed to get 4k@120 YCBCR4:4:4 HDR. This will also solve all standby issue because its an active one. The Firmware ONLY FOR THIS MODEL are attached. I will update the OP with that new one.

The hub is this one:

Model-Number Cable Matters 201310

A few questions:

1) At the end of of 2022 I had Hackintosh sporting a 6900XT which starting at some Ventura version started spitting out 4k/120Hz on my LG C1. Anyone else with a Hackintosh or eGPU able to confirm this on Sonoma?
2) I am currently debating the purchase of a Mac Studio M1 Max vs M2 Max. I presume the CM adapter would also work with an M1 Max Studio? Obviously, a M2 Max would make the process a lot easier, but we're talking several hundred Euros of course.

Cheers

I got to write the hole OP new because many things are changed now and VMM6100 is outdated so I think I will remove this one.

Just realized I have the outdated VMM6100, may switch to your new solution.
Yeah the Hub is really fine and for less cost u will get a lot of things done Plug&Play. No need for an TB 4 Station and then a CM Adapter connected to it.

Guys, I've updated BetterDisplay (I own a Pro license) but every time I wake my Mac, it seems I have to upload and apply my altered EDID for 4k/120hz to show up. What gives? I use Configuration Protection but I feel like I am missing a very specific setting here...

Edit: I should mention I come from 1.5.X (not sure exactly which one it was) and the layout inside the Options menu is very different from what it used to be).
