Nope. I legit cannot find this window even...
When you say you cannot find this screen, do you mean specifically the pop-up modal or the option for Refresh Rate? As in the one where you have to click on the Finder Bar icon or do you not see the option for more Refresh Rates, which then requires you to update as it's a newer option.

I'm saying I don't have that display icon in the top right at all.

Edit: Nevermind, it was ICE glitching

Pretty frustrating that Apple would disable HDR for no reason at all. And I'm on a M3, so why is it having issues?

Just wanted to contribute my own findings:

I now have a MacBook M4 Max connected to an LG C2 TV via using a Baseus Docking Station

See Baseus USB Dock here: https://a.co/d/a3OniTa

Previously I had a Windows laptop where I was able to achieve 4K at 120hz using the same Baseus dock, so I know this dock has a 4k/120hz throughput via HDMI, but it doesn't work for the M4 MBP.

I have a TB5 port now, so why does 120hz continue to not be available as an option? I don't understand.

I'm using BetterDisplay as well, I tried numerous settings but nothing will make 120hz show up as an option.

Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Is there a USB or thunderbolt dock that would actually work for the new M4 MacBooks to provide 4k/120hz, or will I have to use the same Cable Matters hack even on a M4 Mac?

PS: It doesn't seem like there's a lot of M4 users here, so if anyone needs me to do some testing to determine the best way to achieve 4k/120hz/HDMI specific to M4 MBs that also have the TB5 ports, let me know. I have BetterDisplay installed (even though I'm clueless on how to use it) and plan to check out more USB/TB docks to see what would work.

Thanks, I started following instructions for BetterDisplay, but the 120hz refresh rate still won't show:

That's all I have for options. To recap, On BetterDisplay I set the resolution to 3840x2160 @ 60hz, made sure HDR was disabled, and enabled HiDPI, but the coveted 120hz rate still isn't available to choose from. I'll keep testing once I get the Pro version of BetterDisplay so I can access the advanced configurations.

Here's the Display Modes. I haven't tried an EDID override yet as I need to carefully read the instructions to do so.

Also, 120hz is available, but only if I disable hiDPI. Not sure if this is a limitation of the Baseus Dock or MacOS.

Hi, I received my cable matters adapter. Even it says 201388 on the adapter it shows up as VMM7100 on the screen. I updated the firmware as VMM7100 and i was able to go on 120hz. But the problem is, when i close my macbook, my lg c4 is unable to stay on like the power gets disconnected when i close my macbook. Any suggestions or fix for this?

EDIT: I got it. I did marked resolution, refresh rate, color mode, and main status. But why can't i use 144hz :( ?

Not sure why but in latest update of BetterDisplay and 15.1.1, getting random flashes of black / disconnections every few minutes... any ideas?

Like we said, if u use another Dock oder Adapter in the most of the cases it will not work! Only listed ones in the OP are safe so far.

@waydabber just release BD 3.2.1 stable version for better unexposed frequencies config protection:

First off apologies for a few of the more basic questions. I just picked up a new OLED monitor during BF, the 32" Samsung G8/G80D OLED monitor and its my first HDR experience with Mac. This is a gaming focused 4K 240Hz HDR monitor... At least on Windows. Seems the best I can get is 120Hz on Mac. Not sure if this is a Samsung or a Mac limitation. I have used a 144hz monitor in the past on my Mac and the refresh rate was recognized, not sure why the full 240hz range isn't on this one.

I will be using it with my M1 Max Mac Studio and a Mac Mini M4... both running 15.1.1. I understand the M1 chips, including the M1 Max in the Studio are only HDMI 2.0 capable, so only 4K - 60Hz max via HDMI. Though it supports HDR, and this works. If I wanted I could use the Adapter/Cable and use the firmware hack from the first post, though as this is a monitor with DP input that supports DSC I don't need that as I can just use a USBC to DP cable. This gave me full range - 48-120Hz VRR and HDR using 10bit FullRGB and works great.

My question is more about the Mini M4. The Mini 4 should support HDMI 2.1 and at least sees 4K and 120hz via HDMI (but not 144/165 or 240 which the monitor can do but again I am chaulking this up to the monitor)... so its seeing greater than HDMI 2.0 bandwidth modes but not HDR... HDR only shows up if I drop down to 60hz but not if I am at 120Hz or using VRR/Adaptive Sync (Ref Rate 48-120hz). Doesn't matter the resolultion, I am currently on 1920x1080 hidpi, but 1440p hidp or low-res 1440p, and 4K hidp and low-res both don't allow HDR if its not at 60hz when using HDMI. I dont even get the option to use HDR in Better Displays. Is this a know issue? If I use the USBC to DP cable with the Mini 4, it more or less acts the same as the M1 Max. I can enable 4k and VRR and HDR all at the same time (though I can't use 1440p hidpi and VRR and HDR - max I can seem to go is 1920x1080p hidp with VRR and HDR on.

Regarding HDR itself, when I do enable HDR everything is washed out... I have some HDR videos from iPhone and I think BG3 supports HDR as I was prompted to calibrate HDR in BG3 when I ran that with HDR on so I assume so. Is there a way to calibrate HDR or turn on HDR in MacOS itself so the UI is not washed out or is it better to work in SDR and only turn on HDR when needed?

what did you do to fix it? mine is doing that right now
I just reset it with the CM tool, but it's still do it every so often. No great fix as of right now. Also curious what the difference is between their firmware and the one in this thread.

4K144 is the limit of DisplayPort HBR3 x4 without DSC.
4K240 requires DisplayPort HBR3 x4 with DSC @10bpp. This should work on an Apple Silicon Mac.
For an Intel Mac, you need a GPU that supports DSC and you need a patch provided by my fork of WhateverGreen (with OCLP or Open Core and my fork of Lilu) to change the DSC target bpp from the default of 12.
I don't think Intel Macs have HDMI 2.1 enabled by default. A patch may be needed to change that setting (like the DSC target bpp setting).

I don't think HDR is meant for the Mac UI (Finder, Safari, etc.) It's only for certain apps or full screen video or games.

Hello, many thanks to Zorast and the community - I just joined - sharing my success connecting a Macbook Air M2 (2022) to OLED C4 via a cable made by Delock - using knowledge from this thread - Thanks again! Will follow up after the hype =))

Ive tried on 2 Macs - M1 Max based Mac Studio... HDMI has the expected HDMI 2.0 limitations, but via USBC to DP I only get 48 to 120hz refresh rate, though up to 4K and HDR at 10bpp... For whatever reason the Mac is no seeing 144/165/240hz refresh rates via USBC to DP.

Testing the same monitor on an M4 based Mac Mini - first using HDMI, it can do the same refresh rate range - 48-120... but at least with HDMI there are peculiarities in that HDR can only be turn on at any resolution if its set to 60hz. I can set it to 4K120 but not turn on HDR... which is odd because 4K120Hz is clearly using HDMI2.1 bandwidth. If I use USBC to DP cable with the M4 it acts like the same as the M1 Max Studio and no problem turning on HDR at any refresh rates. Yet the Mini M4 is still only letting me go to 120hz max with the refresh rate regardless of the cable type.

For the record this is the monitor:

Is there a way using better/display or system report to see what mode DP is using? Is there a way to do the same thing on HDMI for M4 Mini to see why its wonky or why its only seeing a 120hz max refresh rate on Mac. Testing this on Windows it sees 240Hz...

So the black flashing/disconnecting has been pretty bad today. Not 100% sure why it's happening honestly, theres no rhyme or reason. Seems to go crazy when I’m on a video call or have video going. Maybe GPU related?

Mine too even when i downgrade to previous version. Also is 3072 x 1728 max size for HiDPI? i want 3840 x 2160 resolution but no HiDPI so its harder for me to read the screen

BetterDisplay has a command line interface. I'm not sure which command is the best for getting info.
https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/wiki/Integration-features,-CLI

For intel Macs, I would use AllRez to get info.

The person that reported success with 4K 240Hz was using a M3 Macbook with this display:
https://rog.asus.com/us/monitors/27-to-31-5-inches/rog-swift-oled-pg32ucdm/
The connection requires HBR3 x4 DSC 10bpp. If you connect with a USB-C cable, then you must switch USB bandwidth from 3.x down to USB 2.0 in the display onscreen menu.

If you're limited to DSC @12bpp, then you should be able to create a 4K resolution up to < 2160 MHz. On Intel Macs, there was a 500kHz horizontal refresh rate limit to patch.

LG OLED C4 42"
MacBook Pro M1 Max
Cable Matters 48Gbps USB C to HDMI 2.1

Getting
3200x1800@120Hz (Max available) with HiDPI and HDR
or
3840x2160@120Hz with HiDPI no HDR

with trick described before.
May I know on which Mac OS version?
