She scanned the ICCID bar code to replace my physical SIM number in the ATT system and then used my phone to scan the QR code. Was really quite painless

I just went to a store in NJ and the guy has no idea how to do this. He couldn’t even figure out where to get a QR code from.

Any advice?

Ask for a manger? Seriously though, the woman helping me at least had limited knowledge of the eSIM. She had clearly been appraised that this is coming, even if she hadn't actually been trained on it. She told me I was the first person to ask for one at that store. She just sat down at a table with me, read through some documents on her iPad, then went to the back of the store and came out with the QR code card for the eSIM.

Esim just became available on AT&T, more carriers coming soon I’m guessing.
I called AT&T to activate eSim. They told me they found an issue with their software. Connectivity and coverage could be degraded. They said they were working on a fix. Highly recommended that I do not activate the eSim until new software released. Said it was scheduled to be out before the end of November. What a bummer, I need this working for my Xs.

I just came back from at&t store, though they have esim cards, they were told not to activate it yet. And they showed me communication that esim shouldn’t be activated at this time and must be secured .

What a bummer , thought I can carry one phone instead of two. But looks like it’s going to take a while

What is funny is I have been getting better signal on eSim.

Hmmm. ESim has nothing to do with signal strength. That is all antenna and receiver. Chalk it up to good luck.
Yeah whenever I’ve seen a deviation between the two sets of signal bars it’s never lasted more than a couple of seconds. And for me, the eSIM has been the “weaker” of the two.

Just had a chart with AT&T, I got the same corporate answer: ",,,,, eSIM support has encountered a issue with poor visual VM and other functions. AT&T has been working with Apple to have the software update before the end of the year to fully support eSIM. ......" However, the rep continued as "...... eSIM can only be activated in store with QR sim card. It is available now at the store. But it is AT&T's recommendation that you should wait until later of this year to go to store and activate to avoid any issue of poor performance with certain functions...."

Took three AT&T stores, but on the third I got an eSIM. Positioned myself as suggested—chat said I could get the eSIM here, here’s what it looks like.

In all cases I could tell none of the associates knew anything about it. First two stores kind of blew me off, last one the guy went in back to look saying he wasn’t sure if they had anything like that, but he came back with the eSIM.

He had no idea how to process, so walked him through scanning ICCID into their system and gave him the IMEI for my non-physical SIM slot. Once he processed, I could see the SIM in my old (secondary) phone was dead, scanned the eSIM into the new (primary) phone, XS Max, and it worked flawlessly. I was on both LTE on my business line (on the physical SIM) as well as on the ATT WiFi in the store at the time.

For reference, the AT&T store I finally had luck at was the one in Stevenson Ranch, CA—the Valencia and Santa Clarita stores were the ones that didn’t have any eSIMs.

Slightly off topic, and they definitely need to fix any VVM problems, but the only people who still leave me voice messages are telemarketers, scammers and people over 60. Everyone else hangs up and sends an email or text.

Very helpful. I’m going to try this tomorrow in Denver. How did you convey what the eSim looks like? Do you have a picture?

Did it look like this?

I was curious about this. Will the bars always be the physical SIM or will it follow whichever SIM is the primary?
eSIM is my primary currently and it is the bars. Good question though. I would play with it more but at the moment they have turned off the ability to add eSIM, mine is still working and I don't want to change that. Worst case I have to visit a store for a new physical SIM but don't want to do that if I don't have to. Once we are clear I will play with it more.

The bars are not associated with ‘Primary’ or ‘Personal’ or any other. These are just labels. The bars show signal strength of default line which you can set in settings.

Perfect. I think that may be what gsmornot was trying to say. At least that is how I interpreted. But I think your description is less likely to be misinterpreted. Glad to hear that how Apple set things up since I feel like that makes the most sense. Thanks for the clarification!

We were able to get it activated at The Vistas @ Park Meadows.

Went to the Downtown Denver one on 16th street and they said they didn't have any. I asked them to look in the back, and they came back after less than a minute and said no.

I may go down to Park Meadows but it is quite a drive (I don't live in Denver but am visiting so would need to take an Uber).

I have a feeling AT&T will crack down on this eSim issuance quickly, so there is a short window to get these. By the time I get home to Atlanta on Friday it may be too late.

Hi techiegirl

I called the Vistas Park meadows store. The guy I spoke with said they have no eSIM cards and they won't be available till next year!

Any chance you can let me know who you worked with? I may go down there but its a 25 minute drive and so I want to be certain they still have some before I go.

I got one at the Edgewater location last week on Sheridan Blvd. It was $5 since it was an authorized reseller.

I don’t have a name. My husband went. He said he worked with a manager and one of the employees.

Thanks. Just called them. They said they have the eSIM cards but they have been instructed by AT&T to not sell them and to not activate them. So he said he can't sell it to me even though he has it in stock.

I was able to get it done at the store at 555 Broadway. It's amazing how simple the process was once the guy agreed to do it (initially he told me they had eSIMs but couldn't sell them - I left the store, and he then came outside and said he can do it).

1 phone, 2 operators. Pretty cool.
