YES, IF you must have 2 profiles active then one of them must be the physical SIM. You cannot have two eSIMs active at the same time.

Axel F.
The iPhone 13 includes support for 2 eSIMs at the same time, the screenshot previously provided is pretty clear about that.

It seems iOS 15 hasn’t included any new dual SIM/eSIM functionality. I’ve been hoping for per-line phone notifications - such as the option to silence unknown callers on one line, but not the other. Another feature would be to have per-line ringtones.

Per-line ringtones would be awesome. I've been using dual SIM on my 11Pro for almost 2 years now, and I love it.

Another potentially useful feature would be to be able to filter the contacts list by preferred line.

Realistically, though... I think while Apple have provided us with the dual SIM capability, there are likely so few of us using it, that it's probably not a top priority for development of features such as these. Sadly.

is it even worth going e-sim when the sim from my 12 pro works just fine? I don't want to incur activation charges from AT&T

New with iPhone 13/Pro/Max/mini

New Features

  • Dual-eSIM: two eSIMs, or one eSIM and one SIM can be active at the same time. Earlier iPhone generations could only do one physical SIM + one eSIM active at the same time.

Hi
I am trying to use Orange Romania (supporting VoWi-Fi) with secondary SIM
I forced the Orange SIM to always use Mobile Data from Vodafone (by changing Orange's SIM network search from automatic to manual and then select any network from the list except Orange, that way, Orange needs to use VoWi-Fi all the time)
All good, everything works as excepted.
The only problem is that after I close the screen and phone goes sleeping (5-10 minutes without getting any notifications that would wake up the phone), I cannot get calls on Orange.
If I get any messages or I power on the screen to check the clock, it works, until 5-10 minutes pass again.
I tried changing the phones and the secondary SIM but it's the same. It's not the network's fault, it's the OS...
I have iOS 14.7.1 and I don't really want to upgrade to iOS 15. But I want to ask here, can anybody from here test and let me know if the problem/behaviour persists in iOS 15 with this exact combination?
- a carrier that supports VoWi-Fi, has selected manual network search (to a forbidden carrier) to force using VoWi-Fi through second carrier's mobile data
- letting the phone going to deep sleep minimum 5 minutes without getting any notifications (this is the hardest part because you need mobile data ON)
- background app refresh disabled because I think that also prevents the phone from deep-sleeping
I also posted a video on YouTube so that you guys understand better my issue :
Thanks!

Sorry for the delay! Yes, as you found out, eSIMs survive restores that are not done on the iPhone itself :)

So, unless I Erase All Content and Settings on the iPhone, a DFU restore will retain the eSIM.

I have been in the habit of erasing all content and settings before doing the DFU restore. I will have to change this habit lest I lose my eSIM profiles on the 13 mini.

When you "Erase All Content and Settings" on the iPhone, it asks if you want to erase or keep the eSIM.

I decided to trust your words on this and give this a shake myself.

And the result is good. I can erase all content and keep profiles. It gives me a prompt towards the same.

This is such a relief. I can safely go ahead with eSIM profile (if I don’t want to use my SIM in another device ever).

New eSIM feature in iOS 14: Prior to iOS 14, when turning off an eSIM line in the settings, the number would be immediately deregistred from iMessage/FaceTime. Now, the number stays registered for 30 days.

Does this behavior still exist in iOS 16 for anyone? I also used to observe this behavior, but as of iOS 16 I do not. When I switch one of my lines, the line that was turned off no longer stays registered in iMessage, but is removed immediately. I also tried it on my wife's phone, and see the same behavior -- immediate removal from iMessage.

Thanks for any input. We're on iPhone 14 Pros for reference.

Question, is there anyway to rename the label assigned to my eSIM when only one eSIM is active on my phone? Mine is currently labelled primary so when I turn on my phone is asks for the pin for the eSIM Primary, however I would like to change it to personal.

Or can you only change the labels when you have more than 1 eSIM installed?

Thanks

You are correct. When there is only one SIM (either eSIM or a Physical SIM) then there is no option to change its name.

Are there any eSIM providers that will provision an eSIM before paying for a plan? If so, you could use that to provoke the phone to let you rename the Primary line

Not that I know of no, one option is to wait until PAYG sim become eSIMs get one put it on rename then remove I suppose.

If you are in th US, there might be a way. T-Mobile is running a promotion to measure their service against any other US carrier. Provided you iPhone is unlocked, the T-Mobile app provisions a “free“ e=sim for 90 days. No phone call required—-all through the T-Mobile app.
