Tea (with maple syrup) for me for the past three days, as I have come down with a brutal cough and cold, which my doctor diagnosed as "a bit of bronchitis, a bit of the flu and a bit of a temperature".

This means that most unusually I have a marked preference for tea over coffee.

Chamomile and then bed. Long day tomorrow. @Scepticalscribe Yes, I've been using the sap, as well. It, honey and agave (not my favorite). They each have some unique properties, and, of course, give you much needed energy when you're not at your best. Though I recall locals drinking a "tea" made of grapes and piping hot water during my travels and when assigned to former Bloc countries. I only tasted it once whilst there. Smelled fragrant in a good way and tasted lightly of grapes. Very runny stuff, but not overtly sweet. Honestly, at the time, I thought it was some form of port. Sadly, there was no alcohol in it. Anyway, do feel better. Rest is key.

Well, as I explained in another thread, normally, I take my tea unsweetened.

However, I was advised - by pharmacist and doctor - to sweeten it while I am under the weather - probably for energy, as you write.

While there was sugar in the house - bought by the carer for my return (brown sugar, organic, from Billington's - I take it in coffee sometimes, and espresso almost always and will use it for cooking) I don't usually take sugar in tea.

Honey would have been the preferred option, but there was none in the house until the carer was able to purchase some locally sourced honey a day later; however, there was maple syrup - organic - bought from an excellent French bakery, and I thought to try that, and developed a taste for it.

Time fro another mug of scalding hot tea, in fact.

Very cold and damp here today. Having a popping hot cup of “Finca La Huerta” coffee from Honduras made in my French press. This, with a couple of dark chocolate digestives and today’s Times. Having what I call a “me day” Absolutely Bloody Marvellous!

Sounds as though it is a lovely way to start the day. Enjoy your coffee from Honduras and your dark chocolate digestives - an excellent pairing.

Shocked - I shouldn't be - but I have been away for months and am home on leave - at the low angle of the sun.

And like clockwork, my sinuses are killing me once again. Think I'll do the shots of gingerroot juice @mobilehaathi brought up a while back if it doesn't clear up by morning. Throat is fine, despite the fact that I was apparently snoring loud enough to wake up the dead last night.

Olbas Oil (the core ingredient is eucalyptus) will relieve (not cure) and ease blocked sinuses; ginger is also very good. I always carry a small bottle of Olbas Oil when travelling anywhere.

I can’t recall mentioning it, but it is certainly plausible. I remember discussing ginger tea, so I may have very well mentioned cold-pressed ginger root too. Delicious.

For the fifth day in a row, I have had tea instead of coffee in the morning.
I'm having a double espresso with some steamed milk added in. While I'm grinning ear to ear, and also wishing you well, I think it'll be my last coffee before I fully recover. It isn't satisfying and it's an irritant until I drink several glasses of water per shot.

Not by pure choice, though, rather my bronchitis and flu have brought this state of affairs about.

I expect to be able to return to coffee in a day or two; my teas were not quite was gratefully received nor delicious tasting today as they have been all week, which means that I am on the slow, rocky road to recovery.

I'd have traded you a cold, the aches, a flu and the accompanying laryngitis for just that.

Tried a coffee this afternoon - treated myself to an Ethiopian coffee - and - inexplicably make it too strong - my judgment is clearly impaired and my palate compromised by this bronchitis/cold/cough/flu I am slowly recovering from. Anyway, - and bear in mind, this is being written and posted by a serious coffee lover, my avatar alone should make that clear - I ended up unable to drink it. Most of it ended up down the sink.

Now, I was beginning to tire of tea, - which is what I have been imbibing since Wednesday - and am somewhat on the mend, and thus, I wanted to see whether a coffee would go down well. While I am getting better, I am quite clearly not actually better - or, at least, a better where a coup of coffee will go down well.

I'm sure you know this @Scepticalscribe , but the best thing is to get a lot of sleep. Eat a light evening meal and go as early to bed as you can manage. This virus in its many forms is a real pain. I bet you are still working - and I have often been there having vital issues to take care of...

Thank you. To be honest - and this is a real pain - just now, I am not working.

Actually, I took a fortnight's leave (starting last Monday) after four months of seven days weeks in another continent. Two flights spanning two continents, from the tropics to northern Europe's winter, feeling very tired, and extraordinarily susceptible to the cold and any opportunistic viruses that happened to pay me a visit, I succumbed on Tuesday, and have been on antibiotics since Wednesday (the alarming hue of what has emerged confirms the presence of an infection).

Wednesday saw me in bed by seven, rising the following day after nine - a sleep of 14 hours which was almost unprecedented. Thursday was almost the same. Since Friday, I have headed to bed at eight, or nine; last night, I was in bed shortly after 10.

Actually, I have been in bed early (and I'm nocturnal by temperament) ever since last Wednesday, gradually getting later.

To get around the bad effects that the acidity of Coffee/Espresso have on the body, there’s a way.

Probably many ways, like a lot of fruits and veggies, and lots of water.
But an easy way is mixning bicarbonat with water and a little lemon. Tada, strongly alkaline ;)
Google it for more info.

Been low of espresso drinking consumption of other reason for awhile.
Been doing a liver cleansing, and needed the rest of almost no coffein. Damn, why do I have to push myself so hard.
What is actually good for cleansing the liver is coffee-enema, so I’ve had a little use of my espresso machine
Things are pretty much back to normal now, even through I will continue this cleansing for awhile longer.
But I start to get energy back and working out again, a bit less intense through. Think I have to realize I’m not 30 anymore

Wonder If we can officially call this thread the Espresso & Health thread now...

Sleep is key. I'll be heading to snoozeland much earlier for a while.

Getting to topic but not quite, barley tea. Massive step up from the barley water I was given as a child. Bless the Japanese for thinking to roast it prior to steeping.

I've found porridge lightly sweetened with honey with a pad of butter to be a decent meal for breakfast when sick. No need to chew, too.
