Meditation and martial arts sound a good mix.

I must give some thought to the idea of meditation, as it could well be useful for me.

I am a converted skeptic. It does work, at least for me and my wife noticed it too, and at work they noticed it too as I am one of the least stressed in this hard environment.

I strongly suggest the 1GiantMind app for the following reason:
  • it's totally free. contrary to Calm or Headspace nothing is sold, there is no "pro" version or anything.
  • it's mantra based (which means you just repeat slowly the meaningless mantra in your mind). I found it more effective than respiration based meditation for the simple reason that having the mantra as a "guideline" it helps me stay on track.
  • The instructor doesn't interrupt the meditation. One frustrating thing I found in many apps, including Calm, is that the instructor gives the initial instructions, then stops for a minute to let you meditate, and while you are meditating he/she starts talking about what you should or shouldn't do. To me, it's very distracting. 1GiantMind has a different approach: it gives you the instructions at the beginning for a couple of minutes, then the instructor shuts up for 15 minutes (there's some relaxing music available if you want), then it "wakes you up" for the waking up process. After the meditation, the app offers a few Q&A's that range from "I was very distracted" to "I developed headaches" to more technical stuff.
  • The first 12 meditations are kinda set at 20 minutes once a day, and one guy's voice (the developer). After that, you can choose the 30 day challenge, or just the free meditation (free as there is no challenge, do whenever you like it. At this stage you can change the voice to a female instructor, change to different types of music etc.
I think meditation is worth a try it at least a few times. If it's not for you, then no harm is done, you just wasted a few minutes :)

Kenyan Ajiri with a squeeze of lemon. A little honey. I had a wonderful dream it was a warm spring and the mountainsides were flush with new growth and flowers. Then I snapped awake due to thunder outside.

Made a pot of a new Guatemalan coffee I had to quickly order from Dave's Coffee (i almost ran out of coffee!). Needed to break in the new coffee maker. It worked really well and the coffee was excellent!
