This story about a magic cloth purchased as a joke is astounding.

I’m sorry about this incident with your device, but prefer to see the good side of things: solution seems granted for you. Nice.

(I live in the farthest place from any Apple Store in my country, my 16” arrived today, everything perfect so far…)
After reading your post, I’ve carefully checked the screen coating, which is an important and delicate “part”, as you say. I believe it is delicate, but mostly regarding the manufacture finishing. It should be similar to iPads & iPhones coating, designed to touch.
After all, I’m prone to think you’ve been lucky: better to find a problem in time to exchange the device ;)

I think it is ridiculous that according to the official Apple guidelines you should only use the Apple polishing cloth to clean the XDR screen and the cloth is not included. You have to buy one separately (and wait another 6-8 weeks - does the cloth include a chip? I don't think so). The machine I have been waiting for since end of October is a 4,5K Euro laptop, I think that Apple could afford to include a freacking 15 Euro cloth with it.
It really is, paying a base of 2200 EUR till 6000 EUR should include a damn piece of cloth, and as I mentioned at the post, Apple Guidelines IMHO should be adjusted if the screen really needs this official one, cause as I said, on "XDR Cleaning" it just mentions "Pro XDR Retina Display" and "iMac Pro", the MBP pro guidelines stands with the same old procedure and that's what Apple Genius did, in my case, didn't solve the problem and made it worst, dunno if it was an initial coating problem or him using a "wrong material", or a combination of both, hence my doubts and fears.

Thanks for your support, yeah, I definitely consider myself lucky to spot the problem, and also, Apple has been so kind offering this replacement, so yes, the universe has granted me some luck, at least for now :D

Do you know the worst part? As indications/dates are going, is highly possible that I'd receive the replacement MBP before the cloth arrives, and that scares me ... cause now I really know I'd have to go back to Genius Bar if I need a screen cleaning, but just if they have the official cloth with them (which they didn't btw)

edit: spelling

My machine was sitting in Cologne for 4 days, and now sitting in Helsinki for 3, UPS tracking still isn't even giving a date. Just called them, Christmas back up.

I've been patient, but not happy now.

Forgot to mention that I'm really glad that yours came pristine, specially taking into consideration that going to a Genius Bar or Apple official service to determine any problem, would be harder for you. Regarding the coating, IDK what to think anymore and the method that should be applied as explained in previous posts, but mate, I know the one I'm gonna apply :D

After further review I think that the Apple cloth requirement applies only to the Pro Display XDR and the iMac with the optional nano-tech glass. For our Retina XDR (which is not nano-tech) a microfiber cloth is ok.

Well, Apple decided to exchange my MBP 14" because of a mushy backspace key. Estimated delivery end of January, but I can use the current MBP until then. Unfortunately there's no status checking available for an exchange, they could have at least given me that as wel haha!

Someone here made a spreadsheet to track shipping dates, please add your details to help everyone waiting :)

Well, for some reason someone changed almost all RAM configurations for 64GB, so this file should be reverted (and somewhat protected).

Same boat as you, but for a defective coating screen AFAIK. So many things to check the first days when the new one arrives, dang. Mine is shown under Apple's page, you should see it on the same order that you got delivered but below this one, there you should see your substitution.

Well, I've had the MBP for 2 months now. The key got mushy about 3 weeks ago. Apple at first wanted to repair it only to discover that they apparently can't repair the keyboard as of yet so they offered an exchange.

I don't see the replacement there (yet). According to Apple Support Apple will keep me informed by email. Anyway, won't be until end of January anyway. Weirdly excited about getting a new Macbook again lol.

Keyboard in this gen from what i've read, is fixed to the top plate right? So they'd had to exchange all of it on keyboard issues, maybe as you say they don't have the parts yet and it's referred to China to make a new one. I think they've offered my replacement so "easy" cause I was still in return period.

I'm kinda excited for the new MBP stuff, but this would be my third, first one got exchanged to get 32GB and only got 1-2 days of use, and now this one that came defective even less, I really hope the next they have to manufacture is the one. As we say in Spain "a la tercera va la vencida" which I think it has an english equivalent "Third time's a charm" ... hope this time they really focus on QA on our computers given the fact is a replacement for a previous bad one.

Crossing fingers ?

We have the same kind of expression in Dutch.

I don't know how the keyboard is fixed, at first Apple wanted to send somebody to my house to fix it on site, but they had a hard time finding somebody and next they told me they couldn't repair it anyway so here you go, have a new one. It's a bit weird to exchange the entire MBP just for one mushy key, but hey, I'm not complaining.

Yep fingers crossed our new ones will be perfect!

Guys, I'm not gonna try to get excited, but I am, given the case that my replacement is already on "Processing" I tried to do an experiment trying to clean the screen, at first I just did a few non-pressure-at-all swipes, and saw the "smudge" going out ... so it was kinda a residue, continued and it all went away, grabbed a lens-clean-damp-towel (the ones based on 75% ethyl alcohol) and the zones I saw with spots, I wiped them and then applied the non-pressure-at-all swipes with the microfiber towel all along the screen (the "Amazon Basics" one btw) ... my screen looks pristine now, no marks, no spots, no smudges and checked with kitchen lamp, all the coating is still there. So what's going on with the microfiber they use at Apple Store? Are they dirty?

So in this point, I'm almost 100% sure to cancel the replacement given the fact all the other things that can go wrong (would you do the same or keep the order going?) and coating seems ok, do you think Apple will allow to cancel the process? It started just yesterday.

Some Genius must have used it to wipe the sweat off their face while serving a customer ?

Let the second one come in case it is better, or your current one develops another problem?
Well, I have to recognize maybe i've been a little mean with the "cloth" rather than the Genius, it wasn't his fault, he was so nice, not gonna be harsh, and offered me solutions really quick.

And nope, no problems at all right now, battery seems great, keyboard is nice, temps are great, and theoretically I can't have both computers at the same time, so what they'll do is handle to me the new unit, and in that moment, I give the old one back to them.

I don't have time to compare though that would be great, I'd prefer to cancel the replacement and maybe start a new one over in case anything fails, rather than to be concerned with a laptop that I know I have to return, so better to stop the process if possible while is in "Processing" if that's an option (talked with an Apple Store salesman via phone and he told me yes ... but maybe Sales via CS tomorrow tells me a diff story)

…I don’t know if others are following your story… but this a clear fail from the “genius” at Apple Store!
Your fears were justified (there’re defective coatings, I’ve heard), and “the expert” didn’t know how to clean a delicate surface. How could you guess he was wrong? You’ve repaired an expensive device using good sense; Apple owns you a favor, their staff couldn’t ;)

My thoughts: I also would keep “repaired” unit. (No tentar a la suerte! Don’t know in EN)
But, seriously, I would try to explain to some person at Apple, by phone. My experience across decades doing this way is quite satisfactory; I’ve always found a kind person concerned with my case. I’m sure they will help you in a very friendly way (I mean… e.g. a nice Apple phone-guy helped me once to get the cheapest repair with an iPhone I broke, making some kind of trick related to AppleCare…) You’ll have a relaxed chat with a ”no-genius“ but smart person.
I suppose this staff is specially trained to be helpful, and they don’t need to look charming. They can communicate with your local Apple Stores if needed, they’ll help you.

Tell your story. It deserves to be told. Apple will listen, I bet?
(And these people at Apple telephone deserve to know a good story! They’ll love it).

…And thank you for teaching us how to clean the screen! :) It’s funny: I started to get stressed about this thing after your experience!

(Eagerly waiting for the next chapter in your story ;-)

If everything else is fine, and your issue is now fixed, I'd cancel the repair, especially since you won't be able to compare the two (I get my replacement mailed in and have two weeks to return the old one, but my faulty key won't be fixed either way so I won't have that dilemma). If you're totally happy with your current MBP, keep it. You can always start the procedure again if you run into anything.

I put in an order on November 22nd for a Max 32, 64GB, 2TB ssd in silver and my order page still shows 6-8 weeks until delivery with no estimated shipping date. Ugh this is frustrating. I originally ordered one on the night of the announcement but I cancelled it for a maxed out one.

Thanks to you, you took the effort to read that "wall of text" my friend! And so sorry for giving you a concern, I hadn't it and I was calm cause the number of issues was not that high, what started as a "joke" turned to be a real nightmare. At least for the moment it's still not a so-sad story, let's see how it evolves.

Regarding the cleaning method, IDK, personally I have followed Apple XDR guidelines by not wiping it w/o the official cloth, Genius clearly didn't, though that page doesn't refer to our MBPs as mentioned so nothing to blame to him for trying. I'm gonna stick with this "XDR cleaning protocol" on the new one given the facts, TBH, I didn't dare to wipe the screen before, now even less, cause as mentioned, the non-glare spots after Apple intervention increased.

I'm gonna wait for the replacement and cross fingers for the "Mighty Polishing Cloth" to arrive before.
Hi,

Sry for my late reply.
Well reading is the least I can do :D
I actually let my evil tempt me and I delicately removed a bit of dust with my sweatshirt (what a suspense) :p So far no harm...
I've tried to read a bit about users feedback about cleaning their screen. I think I will stick to the microfibre method... Mainly because it's impossible to find the official clothe cleaner in my local apple store, and also because according to reviews I've read, there is no significant difference btw Apple clothe polisher and most microfibre clothes found on the market...

In the absolute, there is also the option to not clean it at all :D

I hope you get your replacement device soon!

Hello all, this morning checking under sunlight and also with iPhone torch, I saw the screen and still looks perfect (though it's a magnet for little "pixel" dust dots lol) ... so I decided not to risk with a possible unit that could have problems I don't have now (as @J.Gallardo said, I won't push my luck), called Apple and cancel the replacement as they allowed me to do it.

Final conclusion under the spoiler.

So my waiting game ends again, at least for the moment, I've called this morning to them and explained the whole story (in a summary mode of course) to Apple Sales rep, he was very nice and after telling him the facts he really felt glad, he asked excuses in behalf of the Genius, not being able to solve my problem, and thanked me for doing it myself, and he also felt bad regarding the residue that was on the screen in the first place, that shouldn't be there. So well, leasson learned for me and possibly for all of you, if you're as cautious as I am with my electronics.

Good thing also is due to extended return period, if I detect any other problem that I don't feel comfortable with, we can start same process again w/o a problem, so in this case an applause for Apple regarding to "pamper" the customer.

At the end it seems that @carlob and @kinchee87 were right, and there's no need for the special Apple cloth and guidelines should be maintained as they are correct, though that, don't forget I wiped my screen with a cleaning microfiber but not applying pressure at all, close to caressing almost (it seems Amazon Basics one with that technique wasn't abbrasive, but next time I'll use a better quality one) ... and in most of the cases, previous to that, screen was been soaked with the screen-damp-ethyl-clean to remove real spots.

Keep it strong all of you still waiting for your machines, they're truly wonderful and an incredible beast in performance terms. My watch ends now.

PS: So sorry to all users that were infected with my ordering/cancelling story and specially to the mods, my intention was never to be off-topic :)

Such amazing news for you! I am curious if it really gets in on time! Hope so! Let us know :)

Less amazing news, they rescheduled the delivery... I ordered 5 weeks ago, was expecting it in the next 5 days, and now I have to wait 3 more weeks... The wait is getting really annoying, and I will be out of town during the new scheduled delivery time. I'm going to call again, but I don't think they can do anything about it...

My machine came today!
I knew I signed up for a wait, so no problem there. UPS has a fairly terrible tracking system, which added a bit of anxiety, and the Christmas onslaught of packages added maybe a work week's worth of extra waiting.
Still I much rather have the machine I wanted, and now that it's here, it was worth the wait.

:-( Yes, you could try, but the shipping companies are overloaded.

Lets hope this is a overpromise and they deliver BEFORE 24th like some others have experienced!
