Just existing in all countries is not enough either. Here in Sweden, Pay is only supported by a single bank. Not acceptable.

Here's a map of European countries that currently have banks that support Apple Pay. It's noticeably missing in Germany, all Benelux countries, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Portugal, Iceland, all three Baltic countries, Belarus, all Balkan countries, Greece, Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria.

Apple Pay doesn't even cover half of Eurozone. It's only available in 5 countries out of 19 that use the shared currency:
  • Ireland
  • Finland
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
That's it. So it's basically unavailable in most of Europe.

Today bunq updated their app.

"Did you pay online with Apple Pay? In the overview-tab you will see that this was a payment made with Apple Pay".
But in the Netherlands we don't have Apple Pay.. hmm...

That's because apps use language-libraries and every new text in the app has to be translated to all the languages it supports. And Bunq does support Apple Pay, just not in the Netherlands.

Loads of apps have references in Dutch to Apple Pay, Apple TV, News, etc, all services not supported in the Netherlands (nor Belgium in my case)

It's possible to choose to not show/translate some parts (update text) to different countries. Or to tell people "only available in bla bla bla". So this is definitely not a mistake but deliberately done.

Doubt it, I've seen loads of Dutch references to services not available in Belgium. Like TV Shows, Apple News, etc...

While pay is not yet availbe in The Netherlands, bunq is just using Apple Pay to attract customers like us who are keen to use Apple Pay. It is still possible for bunq users outside Italy and Spain to use the payment solution. They have made it harder, but don’t make it impossible to use the service.

so Apple Pay was launched in Italy without further announcement?

Apple Pay (as well as "whatever Pay" service) rollout is limited by the payment system tokenization support for that particular region. That's the system that makes this whole mobile payment thing work. For Europe that's mainly Visa Token Service (https://developer.visa.com/capabilities/vts) and Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (https://developers.mastercard.com/product/mdes).

Visa publishes their region availability for VTS here:
https://developer.visa.com/availability

Judging by this Apple Pay could potentially launch soon in Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Belarus. But this still depends on MDES region availability. I couldn't find it, anyone knows if Mastercard publishes it anywhere? Apple Pay is always launched for both Visa and Mastercard together so tokenization would have to be available via MDES for that region too. For Germany Girocard would have to be supported as well I guess for it to be worthwhile.

That site is out-of-date. One example: The tokenization engine for Germany has been ready for a while and is up and running (ie. to support Google Pay for Comdirect/Commerzbank and potentially Revolut) but not listed.

That's true. Also it's missing Norway, which does have Apple Pay. Still however it's a quite good indication of countries where Apple Pay might be rolled out soon.

Apparently the updated Terms and Conditions of Fortis PNB Paris Bas in Belgium have been updated and mention Apple Pay. Where you agree the bank transfers data to Apple and that more info can be found in the Terms and Conditions of Apple Pay, etc.

I've been using it via Boon Ireland and I must say that using your Apple Watch to pay is a nice experience :)

Do you have a link to the renewed terms and conditions?

No, they can only be viewed when you try to add a card on your iPhone. In the final step it will give an error and say that the card can't be added. The terms and conditions aren't updated on their website (yet).
