I live in the US and will be traveling to The Netherlands. I have a capital one venture card, I specifically applied for it for international travel, in my wallet. Can I use Apple Pay in the Netherlands, or is there some reason it won’t work? I did use it in Ireland about a year and a half ago. I’m trying to figure out other options if Apple Pay is a no go.

Apple Pay does work in the Netherlands (I have a Maestro card with Apple Pay and use it all the time), but the acceptance from Mastercard and Maestro is a different story. Maestro is used and accepted everywhere in NL. Mastercard is not accepted everywhere in NL (the biggest supermarket chain 'Albert Heijn' doesn't accept Mastercard). But at trainstations for example Mastercard is accepted. Coming from the US, I assume that you have Mastercard.

This particular card is a MC. Would you have a good recommendation for a card? We have Visa here and I have an Amex. Thanks for the quick reply.

Well, only a couple of countries use Maestro. In the US they don't use Maestro, so I don't think you can get one. But, most of the restaurants/food places/and big shops use Mastercard.

Level of acceptance in The Netherlands:
1. Maestro / VPay = debit

2. Mastercard / Visa = credit
3. Amex

Ok. I guess we will have to see how it works. I appreciate your help. Do these require PINs?

But if you use the credit card without Apple Pay (if they don’t accept Apple Pay) you might be forced to use it.

That’s good to know. My wife is resistant to AP. Although the bank keeps telling me they only supply a PIN for cash advances. I keep getting conflicting answers between residents and banks.

Well, why did the Belgium paper De Tijd said that AP is coming to Belgium? Maybe banks are gonna announce it by them self? Next week is the bunq event, so..

They have their sources they say but idk rumours or not is the question.. Also if there is 1 newspaper to trust it's De Tijd.
Also I found this recently https://twitter.com/DriesOeyen/status/1056095125032570880
Although some of his speculations aren't true anymore, I still think if AP is coming to The Netherlands; it will be the coming week at the bunq event and for Belgium in the following weeks. Otherwise, I think we can go back to the waiting game..

It's very odd. Germany (announced on the 1st of August in the earnings call) was due to launch before the earnings call on 1st November. It didn't happen. Everyone (in the other thread) is already going mad over it. Then Saudi Arabia was never officially confirmed, yet they have an Apple Pay site showing "coming soon". Then these rumours.

Everything Apple Pay related seems to be a little chaotic at the moment...

What is not true anymore?
That Apple would make an announcement on the last earnings call.

They didn't even announce Saudi Arabia or clarify the launch date for Germany. All very odd... Apple likes to stick to certain "traditions", but they seem to have diverged in recent months.

My guess is that they are doing a way bigger rollout: Germany, Belgium, Czechia, Netherlands

Then I'm sure they would have announced that, as they have done in the past.

My guess is they're falling behind. Rumour has it, that the launch in Germany has been running into problems (either of a regulatory nature, from the banks side or something else - we don't know).

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much if I were you ;)
