dude.. limitations?! The Macbook air has way more power and such than your machines that you use & say are "perfectly fine for what you want to do"

anyways its between a Pro and an Air for me, cant decide if I need final cut & photoshop on the go, or if I should just leave them to my iMac at the desk. Air would be great... I just don;t want to close of opportunity.

either way im 14. Thinking of getting it within the next few months.
Buddy, this whole thing doesn't apply to me. I can't even afford a Mac mini, much less a MBA. I'm saying that the MBA is supposed to be a secondary machine, a compliment to an iMac or MBP or something.

I can deal with a somewhat older machine, that's my business. Of course the MBA has more power then my iBook, but my iBook has several legs up over the MBA. It's smaller, it has an optical drive, 2 USB ports, built in modem and ethernet, plus a firewire port. I'd take an iBook over a MBA any day for these reasons.

OK. I agree with your point on it being a compliment to another machine, but the mba way overpowers an iBook. It's your preference, of course, and none of my business - but it just seems like you're being way too hard on the MBA.

Remember, some of us actually use the MBA as a primary machine rather then a compliment. Me, personally, find this machine perfect to suit my needs since I do not game at all anymore (Im looking at 1 hour per month give or take) and even if I do game, its all older games which would run fine on the X3100.

Furthermore, many may say about the USB ports, optical drive, etc. However, for me, the only time I'd use more then 1 USB port is at home. Here at my desk, I'm connected to 6 USB devices at once (via 2 non-powered 4 Port USB hubs). So even with a MBP or MB, it wouldn't have mattered much. Optical drive, I have a blu-ray external optical drive. Hard Drive space, I don't feel its so safe to carry around 100+GB worth of personal "important" files. Most of my "on-the-go" are typing/web surfing, not watching movies or music, but that's just me. Resolution... well, 1280x800 and 1680x1050 is enough for me.

The MBA is hardly a "weak" machine imo, it was slightly designed as a Pro/Portable machine.

Most of the machines that are "perfectly fine for what you want to do" are also half the price of the MBA. Not necessarily criticizing the air, it's price is in line with other ultraportables.

I'm just not sure why Apple chose to get into the segment. I can't recall seeing more than a handful in any of the threads. The market of people needing something portable bad enough to spend that much on a second machine just isn't that big.

Personally I don't see the point in an ultraportable. It's too big to carry around with me all the time, and anywhere I could carry it I could just as easily carry a MB.

the Air is the future of Apple's ultra portables. it may be expensive and low on specs but this is where Apple is heading for light, thin, consumer notebooks. the Air is so far ahead its not funny… Apple are setting a benchmark.

… now less chit-chat and more snip-snaps! :D

Of course it overpowers my iBook, It's three years newer. I never said it didn't.

I was replying to a question that somebody had about the Air's, they asked why more of the under 18 crowd didn't have more of them. My answer was because it is supposed to be a secondary machine, and there are very few under 18's who have the money for a MBA, just for a secondary machine.

In front of my MacBook Pro
Here's the most recent status of my setup. My 23" ACD arrived today, which made it an opportune time to clean it up, normally it's a little messier than this. The Mac Pro is a 2.8 single quad with 4 Gb of RAM and 2 500 Gb HDs, the PowerBook is a maxed out 1.5 GHz model, the iPhone is a white 16 Gb 3G, and the video camera is a Canon HV20. I'm 17 and have done a lot of yard mowing and weed eating to pay for all this, with a little video, photo, and graphics work on the side.

sweet setup, if I didn't live at two houses I'd probably get myself a mac pro.

Thanks. My parents are actually divorced, so I do have two houses to go between, which is actually why I got the PowerBook (I dragged the Mac Pro between the two houses until I got it, which, as one could imagine, is not ideal).

well I leave at each house half the time so I wouldn't feel like I'm using it enough, oh well.
