This is basically my setup at the moment...revised from an earlier post.

Shown:
  1. MacBook Pro (Primary Machine) @ 2GHz w/ 2GB RAM.
  2. 23" Cinema Display
  3. PowerMac G5 @ 2x2GHz w/4.5 GB RAM
  4. 17" iMac G5 @ 1.8 GHz w/1GB RAM
  5. 12" iBook G4 @ 1.25 GHz w/512 MB RAM

I'm 16, all paid for by myself--from the personal profits I make from running Extendmac, my mac software and hosting company.

I'd almost posted my PC setups too (13 or so...), but this is a mac setup thread ;)

That's a VERY nice setup, it looks great.

I'm not trying to put down your business, as it's obvious you're very smart, and are very well off for your age. However, I think it is necessary to admit that you were lucky to have parents to get you on your feet.

I'm not trying to start a sob story, or get pity, but... When my parents were together, we had plenty of money, and disposable income. My dad had new Corvettes, Camaros, and Jeeps. My mom always stayed home to raise me and my sister. My parents got divorced when I was 14. I had to immediately get a job when I turned 15 in order to buy myself a car instead of receiving the Camaro my dad always promised me. The only thing available to me at the time was a job at a local fast food joint, making 7 bucks an hour. I managed to save enough for a car (96 Monte Carlo). Since owning the car (I've had it for about 2 years), I have had to replace the alternator, brakes, brake calipers, serpintine belt, tires, and an $1800 transmission. While paying to fix all these things, I still had to pay for insurance, gas, etc. I was pretty much working to fix my car so I could continue to work, just to fix my car.

So, while working 25-30 hrs/week during school, I have still managed to keep near a 4.0GPA, score great on my ACT, and am now the editor-in-chief of our school paper. (I plan on pursuing a career in journalism.) I consider myself a pretty smart guy, however, I don't have this great thing to show for it. I'm just some teen that works at Burger King. Why? Because my dad doesn't help with the child support, and so my mom can't help me out very much, even though I know she would if she could.

So, in the end, I could be wrong, but I assume your parents assisted you in the beginning of your business. I don't really have that. Nontheless, you have a great business!

.... ... ..... ..... .... .... ..... .... .... !

Wow .... and wow ... and Wow!

2 Things that I can say just before going to the gym.

1) I'm just over twice your age and man all I'm thinking is ... here is a kid that is incredible smart, grounded and mature! Your parents must be proud and have taught you a great deal to be independent; something they should write a book on if they havent already; many kids & parents like myself strive to be either something greater than themselves or have their kids to be greater than themselves; respectively.

2) I dont mean to put bad thoughts or pull you down from your success, but go out and have an excellent vacation before your 26 just to keep you from having a nervous breakdown.

PS anyone else proud that this lil genious is a mac fan?!

Thanks so much!

Like you both said, absolutely, I'd be lying if I said my parents didn't help me. My parents have both been inspirational in teaching me that no matter what--there's a way to overcome whatever there may be in front of you.

As far as getting me started with Extendmac, again, for sure my parents were here to help me lay the foundation blocks. My mom, on the emotional support side, and my dad, more so on the business side (finances, etc.). Mutually, they've been fantastic, and I really can't thank them enough.

On a totally flip-side aspect--while he may not know it, my grandfather was also a total inspiration for what I've set out to do. I don't know how else to summarize that with the exception of: he taught me that you can't be afraid to do what you believe, and even more generally, you can't be afraid to believe what you think. On the very personal side, he taught me that regardless of whether I think people will accept me or not--I'm the real deal--if you don't like me, that's fine, but this is who I am.

they probably get the money from their parents.

Hey, I'm not gonna start an argument but it's comments like that that make me mad. I am 14 and have ordered a MacBook Pro. I have had NO MONEY FROM PARENTS! Accept the fact that we have jobs and make money, not ohh he's young so he mooched it from his mom and dad.

I didn't know you could still get Coca Cola Zero.

It's being advertised everywhere at the moment. I had some the other day. Great stuff! Tastes a lot better than diet coke...

ahaha. yeah, I used to be a coke zero-aholic. Now I switched to Diet Rasperry Snapple. A bit better for me.. :)

switch to pure water, you´ll never regret it :)

AppleJustWorks, amazing setup! I admire people like you, the ones who take a risk and start early in life. I would really like to do something with my life... I just don't know what to do right now, mainly because I am a full-time college student. The fall semester is quickly approaching, so that's sure to take up my time again.

I've done a few freelance graphic design projects, but nothing major; just random clients found on craigslist.org. I've thought about a photography business... or even some kind of video editing service. There are so many options out there to people like us (computer users). I have several major hobbies, so I definitely plan on pursuing a career in one of them.

I know this isn't the place to get all in-depth about it; I just wanted to add my 2 cents. Anyway, great job and keep up the good work! :)

As for "starting early in life", I think you're definitely on the right track--finding your passion. Once you've got that down, it all flows.

As for your graphic design--if you're ever looking for something compelling to work on--drop me a line, and I'll see if I can get you onboard with some exciting graphics stuff inside Extendmac!

Great, thanks! Your site already looks very nice, by the way. I especially like the homepage. It's simple and the login form is right there. Very nice! :)

:) Thanks. We're actually just going over the design--starting with the hompage and about pages, which we've already retouched, and we've got to finish the rest soon.

My Setup

Well, I finally bought myself my first Mac. I'll be using it mainly for internet, to waste some time, essay writing, and some very light InDesign when I pick up more RAM. Anyhoo, it's a 2GHz White Macbook w/ SuperDrive. I'm kinda broke right now, but I'll pick up some nice speakers, an iCurve, and definitely some more RAM in the next month or so.

I also want to throw in my video game setup, as that is my biggest hobby/passion. I've got a 46" Toshiba HD RPCRT Widescreen (46H84), Toshiba Upconverting DVD Player, Xbox 360, Xbox, GCN w/GB Player, Dreamcast, N64, and PSOne, as well as a PSP, DSLite, and 30GB 5G iPod (Black).

I'm trying to cram all this into my 11'*10" bedroom, and it's getting a bit crowded. Right now I really need a desk, but don't have much room for one. Can anybody reccomend a desk that would fit here, and is less than 100 bucks?

IM002676.jpg

It's about 2.5' wide, and it can't stick out more than 2' at a maximum. I'd prefer it be glass with black accents to match the room. Thanks in advance.

Then, there is the family setup. I didn't purchase any of this except the HD receiver for our Dish Network service. It's a 51" Toshiba Widescreen HDRPCRT (51H81), Toshiba Upconverting DVD Player, Kenwood 800W Surround sound, Samsung VCR, and Dish 811 HD receiver. Both the TV and surround sound is built into the walls.

So, anyways, I'm 17. I've had a fastfood job since I turned 15. My first purchase was a '96 Monte Carlo (Red, Z34). While it had just one owner and was garaged (It really *looks* brand new), it does have over 130K miles on it. So far, I've put over $3500 into just fixing it when it breaks down. So, the stuff I own is what I've been able to save for between car maintenance, insurance, gas, etc. I still cary my near 4.0GPA while working near 30 hours/week during school, and am editor-in-chief of the school paper.

Sorry for the crappy pics. I REALLY need to get a new camera. The family digital is an old HP that pumps out a whooping 3.2 MP, lol. So, they're a bit fuzzy, and tend to have a green tint to them. Anyways, there you go!

HOLY **** no wonder you're broke..haha just kidding

awesome games you got there, nice macbook too.

that lime lamp is pretty sweet, whered you get it?

I think I saw one of those at Spencers or something (I don't know if other people have that store). It's cool it's all....wavy. Not sure if it lights up though.

@ Mattcube64 - you wanna get Surround Sound. Made a HUGE difference to gaming for me! Burnout in surround sound is just like UH!!!

Nice. You have alot of stuff/games.

Thanks guys!

Killyp- Yeah, I've had a chance to play in surround sound downstairs. It's no HTiB setup, although it's nothing out of this world. I blew the 200W sub during the rain fight at the end of the Matix Revolutions. I'll get surround someday for my room, but right now there are bigger wants on my list.

Pyrus- Yeah, absolutely love Halo. I've got over 1500 hours invested into that game on Live. My GT is Skel1ingt0n, if you ever want to play. I've actually owned more copies than in that pic, but I have a bit of an anger problem, and ...well, yeah... Anyways, I like to have some spare copies for when friends come over, but forget their discs. Gotta love when there are 8 TVs for 8 people with 8 Xbox-es. Fun ensues.

lu0s3r322- Well, my dad got it for my birthday a long time ago. But I think I've seen them at Suncoast Movies. They probably have them at Spencer's as well. And yeah, I'm pretty broke. I'm pretty good at saving up my money to make big purchases like the TV, systems, and my Macbook. My fault lies in that I only save until I have enough money to get what I want. I never have more than a few hundred dollars for "emergency" money. I need to stop doing that, but there is always something I want. Such as more RAM, and an iCurve and speakers. Then, when my MB is all maxed out, it'll be time to save for the PS3, and so on, and so forth...

ha, pathetic Passive subwoofers. Never get such a thing with one of these fancy Active subs :p .

Hehe. Yeah, I know, it's nothing fantastic. If I were to do it, I'd piece together something, although it'd have to come out under $600 or so. I'd probably pick up a decent Onkyo Receiver, and I'm a big fan of Athena 6.0 speaker setups. However, that brings me close to my budget already. Can you reccomend a good sub for under $200? It doesn't need to make a big boom, as it'll be filling only a small bedroom. However, I would prefer the bass to be nice and clean.

To be honest with you, rather than go the sub/sat route, I'd go for the hifi speaker way. Get yourself 2 pairs of B&W DM303s. I used to use them as main speakers, although they're the rears now. Dirt cheap, and fantastic speakers. Then get the LCR3 as a center channel, and that's it, job done! No need for a subwoofer. The 303s will give you plenty of low end... ;)

Thanks, I'll definitely look into that. I did a quick look via google, and they seem pretty solid. I suppose that does make more sense, especially if they have good low end. It's funny, because I've never actually thought of that...
