Guys who don't, can't & definitely won't do anything with iPads are kicking' rocks. 🪨🤣

The iPad hardware is amazing but until Ai is baked into the OS so the average non-creative consumer can benefit, it’s not gonna move the needle. The vast vast majority of iPad or even iPad Pro users won’t use Final Cut Pro but will be happy to have Ai to help them enhance their photos in the photo app or CapCut. Or search and find answers easier. As a consumer who doesn’t use the iPad to make money as a “pro” I struggle to come up with reasons why I’d buy or upgrade. I think Apple shot themselves on the foot by continually showcasing use cases for doctors, researchers, car manufacturers, creatives etc. I mean how many of us belong to that group?? Show me some features a sahm a student an office worker can benefit from and maybe then people will start buying iPads again. How about adding sensors and turn iPad into a smart home hub?

I use Paperlike screen protectors on my ipads and they‘re absolutely excellent under the pencil.

The pricing on these is catching up to the Vision Pro

I completely spaced on this, I was already awake and off work except for a side gig and still forgot until right now.

I know there was a Smart Folio introduced just by scrolling past article and hitting reply but I’m off to watch the event now to see what else I missed.

The one time I’m able to catch it as it debuts and I whiffed 😅

Fireworks apart, the iPad is clearly becoming an ever more niche product from a cost efficiency POV.

Personally when I am on the iPhone sometimes a miss a slightly larger display rather then the iPad. Not too far away this is easily solved. When I am on the Macbook sometimes miss touch and pen not the iPad. When I am on the iPad I miss either the iPhone or the Macbook, sometimes both. I can go on for months without missing the iPad. Its the only device that I could loose without replacing, and that I need to think about it to pick it up. I bet this happens to most of you if being honest to yourself. If not, you really need to simplify you digital life and stop baby sitting 3 or more devices.

Cinematographers, videographers, musicians and plastic designers, sure ... have a blast with it. But funny enough this aren't really professions that are known to pay that well. The vast majority live with financial difficulties. At least in Europe, don't know about the US.

PS: My kids, born with the iPad, the first device they played with, moved to the Mac, so there goes the theory that this is the future.

The iPad is used heavily in aviation. Every pilot I know has one... more than 100 people.

Interesting 13" M4 iPad Pro when combined with a new Magic keyboard but when you try to make it the equivalent of a 14" M3 Pro MBP all that little things start to show. Quoting list in USD not EDU discounted.

14.2" M3 Pro MBP with mini-LED HDR display, keyboard, trackpad.
11-Core CPU with 5 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores
14-Core GPU
150GB/s memory bandwidth
18GB Unified Memory
512GB SSD Storage
Up to 18 hours battery
$1999

13" M4 Ipad Pro with OLED display
9-core CPU with 3 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores
10-core GPU
120GB/s memory bandwidth
8GB RAM
512GB storage
Up to 10 hours battery
$1848 including Magic Keyboard, add the new Pencil Pro and the price is almost the same price.

So while pricing is competitive between the two, MacOS 14.5 has been an altogether different experience with applications then the IpadOS 17.5 with apps I use. Up to Apple to make iPadOS 18 that much better IMHO.

There are tons of compatible third-party Bluetooth keyboards starting from $20 (including good ones!), though I haven’t searched for folio-style ones in particular.
I don't want a third-party BT keyboard, starting from $20.
I have the folio on my air now and it's a wonderful, slightly overpriced keyboard.

I'm not paying $350 AUD+ for a keyboard I don't need, so instead, I simply won't buy the iPad.
I'm sure Apple aren't hurting, shrug. None the less, I'd have considered a discretionary stupid gadget spend were it not for this sillyness by Apple.

I noticed this too.. will be interesting to see anyone trying an old folio with new iPad Air.

I suspect Apple have wanted to get rid of this for a long time...

They'd block it, we're talking about Apple here.
I suspect the iPad Air with a 2nd gen pencil and the folio keyboard was eating into their small iPad pro sales.

I don't even have the M1 air, I've got the one before it (the first really good air)
Well, it's on them! No sale, not dropping $350+ AUD for a ridiculously high end k/b I don't need.

As almost always, very cool, but no real benefits to an upgrade from an iPad Air 5 flawlessly running its original iOS version, iPadOS 15.

That hydraulic press ad is absolutely awful. Demoralising. Horrifying

At a time of war and destruction, do we want to see all these symbols of human creativity and achievement crushed under the violence of mindless technology?

The meme is real: Steve Jobs would have never allowed this

Apple is finished

Just get rid of the camera on the next air model. The bump is terrible, and surely those cameras aren't used that much. Take the space saving and make it lighter. I'd buy that, but while there's a camera bump, I won't buy a new iPad.

All in all, good announcement.
The lineup is pretty clear as well.
Basic Ipad is very affordable and dare I say, very capable.
Air is now in the middle, has very good specs.
Pro are very expensive.

Something for any budget. People with money will pay 1500 dollars for Pro, no questions asked.
Average Joe chooses between base model and Air (I chose Air 5 gen not so long ago).
Overall, very clear and not bad. Pros are not for everyone but its OK.

Previous gen Air and Pro are now very good deals.
