Got my 8+ today guys and it’s another story. (Bye X) I really hope this’ll get through news section so maybe there’s hope in 1-2 yrs Apple will consider the issue and find a fix. The front page is talking about everything but this and the PWM issue...

Sorry that you had to return yours, hope the 8+ works out better for you. I'm considering getting a plus model as well if the X doesn't work out, how does it feel compared to the X? My sister has a 7+ and I've been comparing it to my X, the increased screen real estate is actually pretty nice on the plus.

Also, there may be hope for next year, did you guys see the rumor that we might get a non-OLED iPhone next year with the same bezel-less design of the X? That would be perfect.

Hi,

All iPhones since 2007 had flicker-free displays.

Regrettably in iPhone X Apples used Samsung's AMOLED screen which flickers at frequency 60-240 Hz. Especially it's noticeable on brightness level below 25% or less.

How to tell Apple that it's not acceptable to use such flickering displays in iPhones?! I sent email to Apple, and I posted feedback, and I started a new topic in Apple Discussions forum. No comments from Apple.

Reviewers from iXBT website measured flickering of iPhone X screen. Here is a graphic of flickering at different levels of brightness:

Now the screen of iPhone X flickers like screens of any recent Samsung's smarphone (S8, S7, S6, Note 8, etc).

I’m afraid I am also struggling with some of these same symptoms. I set up my iPhone X on Sat 04 Nov and have had a headache every day since with some occasional mild motion sickness/nausea while using the device. I don’t suffer from migraines and don’t experience headaches very often so this is very out of the ordinary for me. It’s a mild headache, but it is the exact same type of headache that I experienced in the past when I had an improper contact lens prescription (ie, optically-induced).

I did begin to suspect my device after a couple of days since that was the only thing new in my life that I could possibly correlate with these symptoms. I realize that correlation does not prove causation. However, the growing circumstantial evidence (timing, type of headache, potential causative factor [PWM]) has prompted me to do a bit of experimenting. I’m going to attempt a challenge-dechallenge-rechallenge experiment. This morning I decided to not use my phone at all to see if the symptoms alleviate over the next couple of days (I’m more of an iPad junkie so I can use that in lieu of my phone for most/everything I use my iPhone for). If the symptoms alleviate, I may try to use the phone again to see if the symptoms come back. If so, that’ll be proof enough for me and I’ll have to get rid of the phone. I suppose I’ll either exchange it (within the 14-day return period) or give it to my wife.

I want to thank the original poster for starting this thread. I checked the iPhone forums early in the week but didn’t notice this thread at the time. I checked this forum this afternoon on a whim to see if anyone else had also posted similar issues regarding the iPhone X. Though I’m sorry to see others experiencing some of the same issues, I am a bit relieved that it is not just me (or that I likely don’t have something more sinister going on with my health).

I haven’t used my phone since Saturday evening. I’ll try to check in later this week.
So, quick update. As noted above, I stopped using my iPhone X on Saturday night. I didn’t even look at the phone it all day Sunday and all day Monday. I was headache-free by Monday morning (yes, it took a full day before the headache finally went away). I felt perfectly fine/normal all day Monday and this morning (Tuesday). It’s worth noting that Monday was the first headache-free day (without medication) that I had since I started using the iPhone X.

Today, I tried using the iPhone X again a few times throughout the day. Unfortunately, I could tell after a few minutes that it didn’t feel right.

It’s a shame. This is a fantastic phone. I love the overall size. I love the screen size, I love the feel in the hand, it has a beautiful screen. And I really like face-id. I really WANT to use this phone...but I can’t. The good news I suppose is that it looks like my wife will be getting a new iPhone X (and I’ll probably be getting her iPhone 7 in return).

For anyone saying “get your eyes checked”...I wear glasses and my prescription is only a few months old (my prescription historically doesn’t change much from year to year). I am on a computer screen or my iPad everyday for much of the day in my personal life and work life and I don’t have any issues with any other screens. I also had no issues on my previous iPhone with an LCD. If my eyesight was off, I would be experiencing this with a lot more than just this one single device.

Oh well. I do hope Apple continues to use LCDs or starts using OLEDs that are less prone to this issue.

IIRC, one of the galaxy phones doesn't have ANY flicker above 94% brightness, I wonder why the X has it even at 100%? It'd be a lot easier to use if they lowered the flicker intensity at higher brightnesses.

Exactly how I feel. It's literally the perfect phone for me right now, but the screen completely ruins it. I'm also in the same situation as you, I'm always on my iPad/Desktop and never have any eye strain whatsoever and am completely up to date on my prescriptions.

I’m not having issues myself, but it’s good word is getting out to either put pressure on Apple to improve it with software or in next years follow up models.

maybe its all the inferred dots projecting on your face that causes headaches etc

Either:
1) PWM display
2) Infrared dots/flood lamp which are somewhat much stronger than the proximity sensors on previous phones as they are clearly visible in the video posted in this thread earlier.

Those are the main significant changes on the iPhone X. You can rule out 2) by taping the notch with some tape or white paper that blocks IR. I think some in the forum had tested this but did not have any effect.

I hope this issue gets the attention it needs otherwise brace yourself for a full line up of apple products with these PWM displays.....
Apple going “all in” on OLED displays in the future is a concern of mine. As someone who is fully ingrained in the Apple ecosystem and who is a big iOS user (especially iPads), this would be a problem for me. My solace is that this kind of technology moves very fast and that hopefully this won’t be an issue in the near future as the technology evolves.

Wish Apple would bring the "standard or zoomed" display setting like all Plus models have.
Non-plus models too. It’s easier to read a lot of content on my iPhone 7 than on the iPhone X I briefly owned (returned for this reason), which is just crazy.

Why wouldn’t they do this?

I hope they will do the right choice... or me and other users that maybe don’t usually read/write on forums will be forced out of the Apple ecosystem, they sold million of devices and this is a serious issue

It is a serious issue...but for how many people? It’s hard to tell at this point, I think...certainly a minority. I don’t want people to experience this, but I do hope there are enough to get Apple’s attention. I thought Samsung had gotten some of the same compaints about their OLED phone displays in the past but it hasn’t seemed to stop them from continuing with the technology.

I agree with you, anyway Apple always cared for the Users’ health, and it is right to say that this technology, even if you don’t accuse anything, isn’t doing any good at eyes and brain in “background”.

LG and other manufacturers already made some steps towards future and OLED substitutes, so let’s hope. I’ve also got a MacBook Pro retina, and I was about to upgrade it, but I’ve learned through some reviews that the new LCD panels are using PWM dimming.. no words, MacBooks were a pain relief for users experiencing this, they were.

The main issue is that this doesn't affect 99% of the users and apple won't do anything about it for less than 1% of the users.

If it makes you feel any better...I have one of the newer 15 inch MacBook Pros (2016 model) and it doesn’t give me any problems. I’ve had it since January.

This must be a very small minority (VERY small).

Cathode ray tubes used to be so raunchy, and people would stare at them 24/7. Of course they became morons, but that's beside the point. :D

I feel that Apple's culture or needs to keep their cutting edge technologies as secretive as possible are hampering their ability to test their technologies on a larger sample of the population. As a result when the product gets released, we start to find out issues like this which were not so obvious before. (eg. antennagate during iphone 4). However the Apple of today feels more caring and concerned about user feedback instead of telling us we are looking at it wrong. So there's hope they will try to see if there is something wrong and affecting a certain part of the population badly. However if ultimately we are a small minority, then we will get the usual report findings from apple which says that the majority of users have not complaint of anything and there is a 99% satisfaction rate. I love the way Apple products are designed with thought, care and quality and am fully invested, however sometimes being at the cutting edge bites you.

Ha! I must be a moron then. :D There are time my wife might agree with that.
