The 14 pro was hands down causing the least issues for me at the Apple store. Difficult to look at the other 2. I’m ordering it and gonna try to use it for a bit. Will report back.
Me too. I just can't find any availability, and I keep refreshing. I feel like I'm caught in an ordering loop. Will. Keep. Trying.

I just found out about this thread. I have a 14 Pro for two days now and I feel a little bit strange. It’s like dizziness or slight nausea. I don’t know if it’s the phone or or I’m getting sick and it’s just imagination because I know this issue exists.

This is my third OLED iPhone, I used a 12 Pro for two years and a XS for two years without any issue.

Is this the PWM issue? And why haven’t I noticed it with the phones before?

Is there a way to know for sure? What can I do? I’m reading things to ramp up the brightness (usually I use auto brightness which is kind of low at 5-10 % in the evening), use 25 % white point and disabling 120 hz, does this really help?
I find it helps like taking cold medicine helps with a cold. It can decrease the intensity of the symptoms, but it doesn't make the cold go away.

Personally, I find having White Point at around 90% helps me. I even do that to my 11 when inside just because I don't love bright screens.

So, try things, but think we all would agree there doesn't seem to be a "cure" for this OLED sickness.

Tangential question:

It's less than 90 minutes before local Apple Stores open and no new inventory on Apple.com or iphonechecker. Anybody have any thoughts?

Any votes for showing up at 11am when they open and asking if they have some 14P available?

(Okay that's two questions.)

Day 2 of using my 14 Pro and I’ve no migraine this time. I’ve been using it for 6 hours.

Maybe yesterday’s migraine was coincidental - I could end up blaming the phone for any migraine I get.

I’m hopeful again. Maybe I’m not affected this time. Let’s see how the next few days go because the 13 Pro took a few days to cause constant migraines for me whereas the regular 13 was from day 2 onwards and caused me to miss work it was so bad.

Yeah, I spent 30 mins on a 14 pro in the Apple store and thought it was ok. It’s hard because I am sure we are all subject psychosomatic symptoms given the OLED PTSD lol. Only real way to do it is to use the phone in normal life for a few days. After that kind of time frame it becomes very clear.

My feeling is that the only solution to this is an accessibility setting to enable for users who are sensitive to motion sickness. We should email Apple health division / software guys.
To do what? Remove any PWM and thus have no control over the brightness of the screen?

This is not a software issue that can be fixed with a setting.

Let's brainstorm ideas for how to create change.

  1. Insist MacRumors and other Apple news sites write a story about this topic.
  2. Get as many people as we can to send "Feedback" to Apple: https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone/
  3. Create a petition and get as many signatures as possible: https://www.change.org/p/apple-add-...train-and-support-vision-disability-sufferers
  4. More extreme: Contact legislators and insist they create laws for minimum PWM frequencies in consumer displays.
Thanks for that feedback link. I just sent my complaint in and hopefully everyone in this thread will follow. I saw my screen on time for Friday was four plus hours and I'm still recovering from that. I just processed my return and will visit UPS tomorrow.

Just make some really famous youtubers ( those with +1,000,000 views per video ) to make a video about the issue

Guys if you want a really change in the Iphone 15

I’m not sure that would happen. The only way we’d see that type of response is if the YouTubers themselves experienced PWM sensitivity. Imagine if iJustine or MKBHD experienced the type of sensitivity that we do. They would have communicated with Apple before making a video and we would have maybe had a fix by now.

.... Or a second tier YouTuber looking to move up. It's an 'exclusive' story and it's just not Apple it's industry wide. This is not a claim or rumor or conjecture. It's fact. There should be no fear of repercussions.

I hate to be a buzz kill, but everyone at Apple that has any power to do anything about this already knows about the issues, and are purposefully choosing not to address it. They know they chose the downside of PWM when they calculated the upsides to using OLED screens.

But until they move to a fundamentally different display technology, it’s gonna be a bit of a cat and mouse game as they try to tweak the frequencies to minimize the impact, but knowing that it won’t help everybody.

You’re not being a buzzkill at all, I love reading other peoples outlooks.

I agree that they’re purposely not engaging with the issue in an an open way, most likely because it’d be a terrible move for them to acknowledge that their product is unintentionally having an adverse affect on some peoples health, and that yeah it makes sense to focus on the majority who aren’t affected by the OLED screens.

I have the feeling thought that with each new model, more and more people are reacting negatively to the screens - I’m the perfect example in that I had no issue until the 13! More people having issues means fewer people that are able to upgrade to the newer phones, which Apple will find difficult to ignore over time.

At the end of the day, Apple want to make money and make a product that people will spend money on - if they become aware that more and more people want the latest phone but with an LCD screen, I’m hoping we’ll get that, even if they never actually address the PWM issue outright. I saw someone write that the new SE will be bigger (sorry I can’t remember who or which page) and I wonder if thats Apple’s interim solution for those of us that need an LCD screen with more up-to-date tech than we’d get from an iPhone 11, as well as continuing to appeal to those who can’t/won’t spend £1k on an iPhone 14 Pro.

A risk for a big youtuber as this might constitute a criticism of Apple and they like to black ball their critics.
However, this issue is not specific to Apple…it’s an industry issue and the topic could be presented that way without criticizing or drawing the anger of any single corporation.

I think MICHAELSD is correct in that no YouTuber is going to bring this up voluntarily unless it affects them directly. YouTubers are driven by views and I don’t think this is an issue that will get the big views. We are a minority group.

I’ve often wondered that with the number of people that work at Apple, surely there are folks there that have this issue.

I think to get what we want, the focus should be on basically getting an LCD version of the new models, instead of focusing on the issues OLED is causing. I say this only because Apple would be worried about litigation if they were seen to be making products that negatively affect peoples health so would never willingly engage unfortunately.

Instead, if the angle is “hey Apple, we’re not buying because we can only use LCD screens, please add an LCD version of the flagship phones with every release” they’ll just hear “cha-ching” and are more likely to produce devices to fit our needs if they can see that the demand for it is there.

Just my thoughts!

Well they killed off the iphone mini due to lacklustre sales and this was for everyone, so there is no chance of a flagship LCD iphone for us, the minority. The SE 2022 and 11 are the options for us, followed by the SE 2023 so Apple likely thinks it's covered I'm sure.

Best bet is ultimately that technology advances beyond OLED to something else that doesn’t bother the eyes or that the refresh rate becomes so fast that it no longer causes an issue.

I agree - if we remain a tiny minority, but I think more and more people are affected with each new model. I was fine until the 13 and I doubt I’m the only one.

I think the SE2023 may kinda be the interim solution from Apple if it ends up being bigger than the current model. I can see them thinking it’ll be good for those of us that can’t use OLED screens but want something newer than an iPhone 11, as well as for their customers that can’t/won’t spend the money on the flagship phones. As a small business owner - despite being nowhere near the size of a company like Apple - I just wouldn’t ignore customers that wanted my product but couldn’t use it for whatever reason. I’d definitely find a way to appeal to them.

My worry is that the next technology (microLED) will also use PWM because of its energy efficiency.

From Wikipedia: "Digital pulse-width modulation is well-suited to driving microLED displays. MicroLEDs experience a color shift as the current magnitude changes. Analog schemes change current to change brightness. With a digital pulse, only one current value is used for the on state. Thus, there is no color shift that occurs as brightness changes."

Apple's display technology come from Samsung Display, primarily. Samsung is a terrible company. (I'll save that rant for another time...) Samsung's best efforts are currently focused on 1920 Hz PWM technology.

Apple only uses technologies that are available to them. I am hoping LG Display creates a viable non-PWM solution.

Trouble is Samsung have cutting edge development over LG. I have read Samsung have had a larger order for Pro displays because LG didn't have the laser cutting tech sorted in big enough yields for the pill cutout.

I can’t seem to get it to work. My iPhone 11 detects my iPhone 14PM and I enter in the code to allow it to try to transfer the esim back but it keeps giving an error…
That sounds incredibly frustrating. Have you got your carrier in on the action? (by chat or phone?)

I transferred my Sim from my iPhone 14 Pro back to my 11 today and ran into the same thing. Don't know who your carrier is, but I got on the phone with a Verizon rep who had me do a few settings and then sent me a QR code. Took a little while but he was really awesome. I know a lot of people complain about Verizon like the other carriers but personally I've always had pretty decent customer service from them. Good luck!
