Are you experiencing this issue?

I'm also very interested to hear how you get along with the S22 Ultra. From what I have read, Samsung does a better job keeping PWM rates consistent as refresh rate adjusts on their LTPO implementation. I have no explanation for why Apple OLEDs in particular bother me so much, especially the Pro line.

I can use my Switch OLED for hours at a time and I'm totally fine. Yet it clearly has lots of flicker so I give up trying to understand it. All I know is I can't use modern iPhones and that stinks.

I also find it curious that other OLED displays don’t cause issues for me, although I do admittedly feel sick staring at Galaxy demos.

I'm starting to think it's something in the way iOS renders or the animations/scrolling or something that I'm just not seeing that somehow mixes poorly with PWM displays and causes me issues. There has to be more to it than just PWM. Had I just looked at an iPhone 14 in store, I would have walked out with one unaware of the issues to come. I only know exactly what to look for because of my experiences with the 12 and 13 in the past (focus issues, shimmering in mid tones, lines in text when scrolling).

Something about the 14 Pro just makes it obvious right away. But then in store, the 14 Pro Max showed no signs of being a problem for me at all. Not even the usual stuff I notice. Maybe the bigger screen negates the other issue(s) that I'm not seeing? At this point I'm just confused, haha.

If you don't experience problems with an LCD, non-PWM iPhone, you can cross the animations theory off of the list.

Confusingly, the text states that iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 480Hz rate above 50% brightness but the measurements show the opposite of a 240Hz rate being active at 50%-75%.

75% brightness:

I’ve pretty much abandoned the rest of the forum as I just check in to see how y’all are doing and what the good word is. So, I thought I’d show y’all this. I’m setting up the wife’s 13 mini. With my sized hands I really don’t think I could use this phone comfortably lol.

Now those are hands meant for the Pro Max, haha. I do love the fun factor the tiny stature of the Mini brings. Still amazing to me they fit everything into that.

I reckon you could slap that on your wrist and have an AW Ultra Ultra.

I want to interrupt quickly by saying thank you to everyone who has contributed to this topic over the years. We are all only on this planet for a short time, and while it may not be noticeable yet, this thread has made a positive impact to society and its future. For everyone who has provided technical information about pulse-width modulation or even just sent feedback to Apple about this issue, know that someone in the future won't experience the negative effects of PWM because of us.

I personally believe that Apple/Samsung have invested so much in this particular OLED technology that they can't switch it easily now; however, future display technologies may be designed without PWM because of our continued efforts. Just food for though.

Looking forward to an LCD, PWM-less iPhone SE (2023)...

Well, the wife has been on her new 13 mini for an hour. Not a care in the world, just flipping through Facebook and TitTok. No headaches, no eye strain, no symptoms at all. Hasn’t even tried the camera.

As I sit here on my 11 watching this ridiculousness transpire, she looks over at me and says “ya know the nicest thing I’ve noticed with this phone? It has a perfect new screen protector with no cracks”.

I’m going to bed 🙄

My girlfriend has had iPhone X since it was originally released 5 years ago. The other day, she was outside on the patio and I was inside watching TV. I heard a car accident and went outside to ask her if she heard it. She said she did not hear anything and said I was hearing things.

25 minutes later, we drove together to go to Home Depot, and 3 blocks away there were two wrecked cars being hoisted onto flatbed tow trucks. I looked and her and she knew exactly what I was thinking.

I think vigilance plays a part in all of this. It may turn out that everyone's eyes or brains are differently affected by these phones, but I think people who generally do not care (usually people who tell us we are crazy) are affected least.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Notebookcheck review: iPhone 14 Pro Max review

The iPhone's ProMotion display also shows the flickering that is typical of OLEDs, but a quite smooth curve with a stable 240 Hz at minimum display brightness. If this is raised above 39 percent, the frequency then rises to a constant 480 Hz, which is comparable to high-frequency DC dimming. The burden for sensitive people should thus be lower. No temporal dithering was determined, which we checked for by examining the display with a microscope and a 240 FPS slow motion video (dark gray, at full brightness).

My SE arrives today, according to the UPS site :) How are you holding up with yours so far, @Wig321?
Sorry I haven’t replied.

So I’m completely puzzled as to next steps…

Returned the 14 pro, Amazon did not deliver the iPhone SE next day like promised, arrived 2 days later. Not liking it. Too many bugs such as scaling issues, pop up messages and alerts requiring you to scroll down to view when on the other iPhone models this wouldn’t require any scrolling.

More annoyingly, motion sickness is 100x worse than with the 14 pro. Actually is making me feel sick and dizzy writing this message out.

The issue I had with my 13 pro (owned for a year) was my eyes felt like they were always darting around the screen and unable to focus. Never felt comfortable to view, eyes straining and I was always playing around with white point, True Tone etc.

Last weekend I also ordered a 13 mini which I used for a few days this week, sure enough my eyes got tired using the 13 mini (I had a 12 mini for a year before the 13 pro). I returned the mini yesterday and currently back to motion sickness on the se 2022.

I’ve never had issues with motion sickness with iPhones before?

I have a refurbished iPhone 11 coming tomorrow from Apple so I’ll return the SE at the weekend. If the 11 causes me the same issues as the se, then probably go back to a 13 pro as I wasn’t a fan of dynamic island or always on display.

I slow mo recorded the 13 mini display and it was as if I was under a disco ball at creamfields.

I’ve also been using 2 old Dell monitors in work that are really not helping my eyes but motion sickness happens only when viewing the se

I actually have no idea what phone to use, I’m heavily invest in the Apple ecosystem so not easy to change to Android. I’ve had issues with eye strain since 12 mini, not sure if I had issues with the X

Huh, why not?
I am not sure if you are being funny or not so I will answer honestly haha. My hands were the same size when using the pre-iphone 6 models and I had no complaints using the smaller phones but ever since we have been allowed to become acclimated to larger screens, I find it is much more comfortable for me to have additional width when typing. I 'could' use the mini, I just would prefer more screen real estate for typing. It is a nifty phone though. Nice and compact, beautiful screen, almost feels stealthy. If I didn't have PWM issues and didn't use my phone for much media consumption it would be quite tempting.
