I still have so much to respond to here, but I will say that 100% brightness with RWP at 90% at least looks amazing. The only way Apple could make the OLED look better, or even usable to us, is with true DC dimming.

The pixels just look better with lower amplitude cycles. A true >1% DC dimming would be incredible and frankly necessary for us to be able to use these devices without eye strain symptoms.

Honestly, I think the most frustrating part of this is that we’re sacrificing our health, energy, and time over an issue that could have been solved simply with a DC dimming Accessibility option years ago. This is easily resolvable, yet still doesn’t have a solution.

I gave up on a new iPhone for now and picked up an iPad Mini 6. It's fantastic and using it makes me realize just how much faster these new devices are compared to my XR. I may just pick up a 2022 SE to use alongside the new iPad Mini and 2017 iPad Pro and call it a day. At this point, my iPhone is basically a message router to the MBP and iPads, so it's not like it needs to be something fancy if I'm being honest with myself.

Got a new battery in my 11 yesterday and I'm good to go. Looks like this baby is going to have to last a couple more years. (maybe) Had it done at an iTech place and the iPhone doesn't recognize the battery so I get this warning all the time! Settings icon badge constantly shows the 1. Hope to figure out a cure for that!! But it is nice to have an all day battery again!!
I get the same error and I had mine replaced in an Apple Store. Now I have to drive 90 minutes back to get yet another battery put in. They told me before leaving it would recalibrate and the warning would be gone within 24 hours. That was a week ago.

^^That's surprising that Apple would screw it up too!! Guess I better get used to seeing that 1.
It’s been an unfortunate experience. I went for a battery replacement in my 11 at 6:15pm 9/27 and at 8:10 they hurried me out the door with my phone (closed at 8pm). Add the 3 hour round trip and it was a 5 hour ordeal. Got home and realized they messed up my screen.

I went back on 9/30 and after another 2 hours they finally explained they needed to replace the ‘new’ battery because it was warped and damaged the screen so I left with a new screen, second new battery, a promise the warning would disappear and another 5 hours gone.

Sunday, I will try again. I realize in the grand scheme of life this is nothing. Just a few bumps in the road.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that's been such a hassle. The next time I have to drive 35 mins to the Apple store, I will not complain. When I'm at the office, I'm less than 10 minutes away. And IT usually send me to pickup equipment for MarComm since I'm one of the few who knows Apple stuff, so that's even more Apple product temptation surrounding me. It's amazing I've been using a XR and Series 3 Apple Watch as long as I have. And I'm still on an Intel MacBook Pro. I guess I do have some self control, haha. This OLED iPhone debacle has probably saved me a lot of money truth be told.

I have messaged on this thread a few times in the past.

For all those stating you feel some pain or strain with the new Iphone 14 plus etc but you're gonna give it a few weeks to see how it goes, please reconsider this.

I am almost two years with a headache after an iphone 12pro gave me a headache, two weeks later I went back to my 11 and the pain started to subside, but the damage was done.

I have paid hundreds with a private neurologist who has diagnosed me with New Peristent Daily Headache(NPDH). The pain never goes, and never will. Usually brought on by viral infection but can be triggered but other means, repetative eye strain being one. It triggers pain within glands in the brain.

I have tried lost of drugs, some which have been effective but the pain breaks through them after time. Next month I am starting botox therapy, 37 injections in my scalp every 10 weeks.

Appreciate this PWM issue is only a very small percentage of iphone users, and the chance of someone new also getting my condition is even lower but if there is pain, please stop.

I would gladly use a Nokia 3310 for the rest of my life if it meant my condition went away.

I’m so sorry to hear that!
Did you have clear symptoms relating to the use of the iPhone 12, it was rather severe and you absolutely knew it was the phone?

And I assume an SE would be a decent option for you or those similarly affected?

I’m in a weird spot headache-wise. I’ve had rather frequent headaches for probably 20 years. I’ve had much more frequency with them- almost daily- in the last year to year and a half.

I’ve had oled phones for the last two years- a 12 mini for a year that honestly didn’t seem to have any direct correlation with my headaches… and now for the last year a 13 pro- which seems to be easy on my eyes as well, in that I don’t develop a headache or eye strain when or directly after using the phone- even if it’s a long hour or two session.

But I’m now a bit paranoid over that coincidental increase in my headache frequency. I’ll go stretches of a few days without any problem (even when using my phone a lot), then have other stretches with constant headaches- even if I am not using the phone a lot.

My wife and doctor think it’s more to do with changes in the last couple of years now that I work from home- not as active, staring at a computer screen in a rather poorly lit bedroom for 11 hours per day with bad ergonomics compared to what I had when working in the office.

But who really knows- part of me wonders if even though my phone seems fine, if I’d get into a better routine headache-wise if I were to switch to an SE, to get away from pwm.

Anyway- I wish you the best, hopefully you do get past the headaches or at least the Botox treatment really knocks it out.

I assume there would be no problem at all with an SE 2022 since it’s lcd with no pwm, correct? I’ve read about temporal dithering that even on lcd screens can cause eye strain or headaches. I can’t find anything online, though, stating whether the SE has this?

Yeah, the SE will have zero issues with PWM being LCD. I've never had issues with temporal dithering that I know of, but I know some people don't get along well with the XR/11 screens. My XR screen has always been great and easy to look at for long periods of time so, thankfully, I think I'm only sensitive to PWM flicker. I don't even notice the dreaded jelly scrolling on the iPad Mini. If someone hadn't told me about it and exactly what to look for, I wouldn't have noticed. Funny how reviewers made jelly scrolling out to be the end of the world, but this PWM thing just get totally ignored.

That is correct. I have an XR and a SE2022 and I find the screen color and clarity on the SE are excellent and in my opinion better than the XR. The real estate on the XR is fantastic for me though. That’s not to say that the screen on the XR is sub par. It’s fine. That’s just a personal opinion.

I honestly wish I could spend more money on an updated phone with the latest internals and camera with a 5.4ish inch LCD screen.

But Apple currently limits my spending cap at the SE price for a new model.

Good luck all. This continues to be saga.

….. I remember how excited I was to get my 11 pro. So beautiful, full screen, amazing camera….. then the headaches and nausea began….

👍 I'm happy the ipad mini is working for you, I can't unsee the jelly sadly or I'd be on the SE2022 and Mini 6 combo.

That's what is so frustrating about this OLED thing. I'm really not picky about screens. I have a 2017 iPad Pro that has developed a big bright spot in the bottom third of the screen that so many do, and even that I barely notice and it's pretty obvious. So this move to OLED in the name of better image quality is lost on me and just means I can't use new stuff.

I’m having a weird issue with the LCD displays. After using them I get a persistent white flicker in my left eye on the left side. It’s taken me all this time on my 14 Pro Max since launch for the flicker to go away.

Temporal dithering? I don’t know. I first developed this problem using an LCD Nintendo Switch and I don’t know if that’s got temporal dithering.

The flicker is still there but slight and no longer white. I only notice it now if there’s a light source to my left.

Both the se 2022 and 11 I’m trialing to replace my 13 pro / returned 14 pro, are making me dizzy and giving me a different type of eye strain. Hard to explain but feels like I’m looking at flashing lights while using the se/11, feeling remains for a short period after putting them away.

I was on my MacBook Pro 16 m1 this morning and no issues at all. Whenever I picked up the 11 this morning I had the same experience as mentioned above.

I’ve used the se for a week now and no improvement. Returning the se and will use the 11 until Apples return window closes. Could using oled iPhones have caused some damage? X > 8 plus > 12 mini > 13 pro > 14 pro > …

(Eye strain/dry eyes for several years).

Good lord I’m so sorry to hear about your pain. I had I idea this even exists though I damn near ended up with one from a few weeks with the 13 Pro. Nothing I could take would make that headache go away. I guess I’m lucky quitting that phone made it stop.

I have a friend whom I told about pwm and how it was causing his migraines (after carefully listening to him and his wife describe the problem). He said he didn’t care because he loves iPhone so much and so he just somehow endures the migraines. He doesn’t talk about them much. Honestly I think he just doesn’t believe me.

I’m not sure what I am going to do because clearly LCD is doing some kind of damage to me, too. At least iPhone LCD.

I seem okay on this 14 Pro Max but I do sometimes feel eye strain so it’s time to put the phone down.

I am a two time survivor of virus-caused brain inflammation. Whatever I had when I was 5 was probably trying to kill me but I don’t know if it was encephalitis or meningitis. I didn’t have medical care after my father left the army when I was two. I just had mandated shots at clinics and that was it until my late teens. I’ve since described my ordeal to our pediatrician and he said it sounds like I might have had both at the same time and it’s a miracle I am alive. I was left in a darkened room and if I moved my head even a tiny bit pain exploded to almost blackout levels. I had to move my head really slowly. I’m honestly not sure how I’m alive. I assumed it was normal to have a headache like that with a bad flu but I asked the pediatrician when I had my own baby if that was normal and he looked shocked and told me about meningitis and encephalitis.

As for why my parents didn’t take me to the doctor, they had the exact same thing. We were all lying around trying not to die. I told my dad a few years ago he should have just called an ambulance but he said he was so sick it didn’t occur to him. He was unconscious more than my mom and I were.

That was 51 years ago and I still remember it.

Then in my mid 30’s I got West Nile encephalitis, at least I assume it was that. We had dead crows all over our yard and tons of mosquitoes to transmit the disease. And the news was full of reports of people sick with it in our area. We were supposed to report each dead crow to the county and I did, but nothing came of it. I didn’t go to the hospital for that, either. At that point I loathed doctors because of issues I won’t go into here. And I didn’t want medical bills insurance might not cover, and compared to what I survived at five, it wasn’t that bad.

I’ve sometimes wondered if the problems I have with pwm now have anything to do with those illnesses but I have had extensive scanning when my seizure migraines started and my brain looked healthy.

I’ve also had my head slammed into tile and stuff (tomboy, played and fought really rough and it was the 70’s lol) but again, scans showed no signs of damage from that.

I asked a family member does their iPhone 13 give them headaches/eye pain? “Yes, why?”

Sure enough their phone was on max brightness and that’s how they have to have it set. Introduced them to reduce white point.

I noticed flashing/strobing issues using the iphone 11, alot like using the ipad pro 12.9 M1 miniLED. It's the torch being flashed on the edge of your vision feeling - and that's with attention aware off. Both made my eyes feel like I was constantly focusing.
