Yeah, the SE will have zero issues with PWM being LCD. I've never had issues with temporal dithering that I know of, but I know some people don't get along well with the XR/11 screens. My XR screen has always been great and easy to look at for long periods of time so, thankfully, I think I'm only sensitive to PWM flicker. I don't even notice the dreaded jelly scrolling on the iPad Mini. If someone hadn't told me about it and exactly what to look for, I wouldn't have noticed. Funny how reviewers made jelly scrolling out to be the end of the world, but this PWM thing just get totally ignored.

Thanks for the response!
You mentioned temporal dithering on the xr/11- I assume that means the SE has it as well?

Both the se 2022 and 11 I’m trialing to replace my 13 pro / returned 14 pro, are making me dizzy and giving me a different type of eye strain. Hard to explain but feels like I’m looking at flashing lights while using the se/11, feeling remains for a short period after putting them away.

I was on my MacBook Pro 16 m1 this morning and no issues at all. Whenever I picked up the 11 this morning I had the same experience as mentioned above.

I’ve used the se for a week now and no improvement. Returning the se and will use the 11 until Apples return window closes. Could using oled iPhones have caused some damage? X > 8 plus > 12 mini > 13 pro > 14 pro > …

(Eye strain/dry eyes for several years).

Hmm, interesting! It’s frustrating there is no real facts out there we can reference in regards to your question.

For all of you that are experiencing trouble with the SE or 11, if you don't know this already, turn off reduce motion.
In addition, on the 11, turn off attention aware features in the face ID setting. Doing both of those things have helped me on my 11 since almost day one.
You mean turn "on" reduce motion?

I noticed flashing/strobing issues using the iphone 11, alot like using the ipad pro 12.9 M1 miniLED. It's the torch being flashed on the edge of your vision feeling - and that's with attention aware off. Both made my eyes feel like I was constantly focusing.
I don’t remember this from the 8 plus. Yes same issue with attention aware off and reduce motion.

Keep us updated mate, watery eye could turn into a aneurysm!
I can’t tell if you are being serious or not, but I think you’ve used this term before in other posts (or perhaps others have). You might want to look up what an aneurysm is. That is a completely different condition from what folks are discussing in this thread.

Ive come to the conclusion that the less an iPhone is used, the better. I think over use causes brain rot (not kidding).
So if minimal screen time is the goal (and it should be for everyone) then a crappy flickering display like rhe current iPhones have is - only doing you a favor.
Its self limiting. The more you use it, the more pain it causes- which ultimately leads to less use — which is the goal of iPhone use anyway. Or should be.

Just wanted to bring up the fact that the iPad Pro 11¨ Gen 3 has been amazing on my eyes. I wish all Apple products had the option of using a version of this IPS LCD screen. No motion sickness, brain fog, eye pain, or nausea. I basically use it as a phone-laptop around the house and its actually portable enough that I can comfortably bring it with me on trips. Also, for those who may have issues with the M1 MacBook Pro Mini LEDs I recommend the app ¨BetterDisplay¨ as in the settings you can change the software brightness and actual display brightness independently as well as configure the resolution to non HiDPI if you prefer. With some minor adjustments to gain, contrast, gamma and brightness, it makes the 14¨MBP something I can work with. Although, I’m hoping the IPad Pro gets Logic Pro and Final Cut soon so I can go full on iPad Pro w/ Magic Keyboard.

iPhone 14 Plus updates ?
Used it for two days, 3,5-4 hours screen time. No headaches. Slight eye watering.
Now considering trying the 14 Pro Max and keeping that.
Have no idea what cause the annoyance, maybe the brightness/whiteness of the screen has impact as well. 14 Pro was a lot whiter than the 14 and 14 Plus.

Then again, it could also be the brightness, so maybe a 14 Pro Max on lower brightness will be tolerable.
Do know I like the bigger screen better.

Maybe it’s what Apple intended all along for all of us to use our iPhones less 😆

I mean they did introduce screen time and Tim Cook talked about how he would find himself throughout the day spending too much time on his phone.

Oh! Do some research on temporal dithering. It’s how the newer LCD screens get the broader color range.

And it involves shifting pixels very fast back and forth. The 11 and SE 2020 both gave me a hot feeling in my chest and a little eye fatigue pain.

So 14 pro better than 14 plus for you ?

No. 14 Plus and 14 regular seem better than 14 Pro. But as am not sure if it's just pwm causing annoyance (think it has to do with whiteness/readability of the display.as Well. Regular seem more yellow) I wanna try the 14 max.
Plus is perfect weight and screen size. But rather have the extra zoom camera. So willing to try.

Have you turned off True Tone / Face ID awareness and white point on ?

Well o_O No wonder my left eye was going nuts. That poor eye is healthy but my autoimmune condition causes inflammation in the lids and that eye is prone to it and that makes that eye more sensitive overall. The entire left side of my body is the side that gets the most injuries and ailments. That’s a bummer because I am left handed.

This is what I am trying to figure out. The 14 bothered me less than 14 pro. But I have read 14 pro max is better? I am up for trying 14 plus…

So which should be better 14 pro max or 14 plus?

Do the oled phones like 13 pro use temporal dithering? And what about se 2022?

I wish I could just get an lcd phone with a safe display like my 7 had, with the new processor in it. Why can’t that be what the SE is, without things like temporal dithering?? I’d get rid of my 13 pro and buy an SE 2022 today if I knew it was harmless with no temporal dithering.

I stopped by the Apple Store today to pickup a folio case for the iPad. I spent a decent amount of time messing around on the 14 Pro Max (again) and 14 Plus. I spent more time on the 14 Plus since I was most curious about that one. From what I could tell during my time in-store, the 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max felt fine. So then I went over to a 14 Pro just to see if I would still notice anything. Took less than a minute on the 14 Pro to find myself struggling to catch focus on the screen. I pulled out my XR and put it next to the 14 Pro and I could read the XR just fine. At this point, I'm starting to think something about OLED's pixel layout and/or the PWM factor just makes it harder for me to read content on the screen. Thus causing me to strain to read text, which then leads to the tension headaches. The larger screens get around that by being, well... bigger. I'm still not sure I want to bother with giving it a try but I'm tempted. If I were to try one out again, it would be the 14 Plus.

I updated my glasses prescription and I’m getting even more headaches focusing on this iPhone 14 Pro Max, which leads me to believe my eyes still don’t like to focus fully on the flickering display. I’m surprised I’ve been able to use it for as long as I have, but in retrospect my eyes do still go out of focus after a few seconds of staring at the display perhaps to prevent headaches. Once I attempt to fully focus it leads to constant migraines.

Agreed, the current 11 inch iPad Pro works well for me. The iPad 8th gen was really good also. For whatever reason the iPad Air isn’t as good. /shrug

Does the standard iPhone 11 use temporal dithering? I’ve stayed away from the 11 all day, no eye pain at all, picked it up and 2 mins later feels like I’m looking at bright lights (screen is on 30% brightness with 60% reduced white point).
