Apprently

The iphone 14 non pro has a new screen supplier boe

And the pwm rate os 1040

Which seems good

Notebookcheck says 60hz but they got that confused with refresh rate im sure
Where did you see this info, especially regarding the PWM rate please?

Its odd because the iphone 11 isthe same lcd

I checked the low flicker its very very low and im assuming the tenporal dithering will be the same too

Could be placebo who knows
Yeah, possibly could be.

I remember when I bought my 11 when it was first launched, I had some odd eye sensations and some eye pain for the first month, and that then went away and I was good for the rest of the year.

Maybe the SE will be like that for you?

I used my SE last night for about an hour and a half and actually had very little issue, so I'll see if things change now going forward.

Thanks. Looks like this info came from the bilibili.com video that was doing the rounds right before release. I'm not sure we can put any faith in the 1040hz reading.

I am struggling to understand the difference between the PWM frequency (stated as being 60 Hz on Notebookcheck) and the modulation, which according to the Notebookcheck screenshots, is extremely flat- at 50% brightness the regular 14 appears to be as flat as non-PWM phones like the SE.
So, if there is almost no modulation- how is there much of any flicker? I am trying to wrap my head around that.

so, i am ok with iphone 13 mini, what about 2022 line up? is it general consensus that Pros this year are similar to non pros 13?

I’ve been reading everyone’s posts with interest. Since getting a suspected concussion a couple of weeks ago I have been switching between iPhone 11 and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Max was giving me headaches but iPhone 11 did and still does give me eye strain feelings. So I’m back on my 14 Pro Max. I’m not getting headaches yet, so far but it’s only been since Sunday morning.

The flicker or white shimmer at the edge of my left eye fortunately didn’t return in full force during my moderate return to the iPhone 11. I do think for some reason the SE2 and SE3 LCD displays and my Nintendo Switch made that issue worse than the iPhone 11 LCD display does.

As to why, well that’s what we are all asking ourselves about these weird results.

So far I’m once again comfortable on the 14 Pro Max display in terms of no headaches and no eye strain. Actually there’s far less eye discomfort than on LCD for me now.

Where it gets me is I do feel like it’s screwing up my physical coordination. Drat it all, I want to move to a big ranch house on one level now. Lol, unfortunately that’s not going to happen. I have two staircases leading up to the second floor. And one to the basement. They’re gorgeous but treacherous when my coordination gets messed up. I’m going to have to be very careful.

This very much reminds me of my time on the 11 Pro. I was comfortable but uncoordinated on that phone. I was okay on the 12 Pro Max but I am not going to try and get another one of those. I think I got a lucky draw. That display did have unique defects and couldn’t display true blacks. They turned out green instead. It made watching videos and looking at photos a bit of a challenge.

That may have worked in my favor, though. Sigh.

Interesting that the SE2/SE3 would have caused more problems than the 11! From what I have understood, the SE2/SE3 and 11 have the exact same screens, just different sizes- all have temporal dithering which may be problematic for some people (I still wonder if that's the cause of the dryness in my eyes that I feel when using my new SE3), but it would be interesting to better understand the differences in how they are impacting you.

The Nintendo Switch screen possibly makes sense, as it is LCD but from what I understand it does have pretty bad PWM.

That seems to be the consensus here- with people mostly finding success with the non-Pro 14.

It is interesting that the 13 Mini works for you- does it work at all brightness levels, or do you have to set it just right for it to be OK?

I just use it, found out that maybe store kightning was worse than pwm itself.. amd i started tio use ipad when at home to reduce my exposur to pwm;) so now i think about buying 14 pro ;)

On my 4th day of using iPhone 14. Unfortunately I cannot say I'm 100% symptom free when using this phone, but the experience is not as bad as the 14 pro. I do think my eyes feel slightly strained and my head sometimes has a little dizziness. However with the day light saving my sleeping for the past 2 days have been interrupted and I think maybe it played a role in it. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to keep it, but we will have to see how things goes for the next 9-10 days.

Might be a dumb question - are these extended holiday returns everyone is talking about from the Apple store? Do you buy it unlocked and then try it and return it at the store? There's no restocking fee or anything if it's open/used? Really wanting to try out the 14 Pro and for it to work out even though the 11P and 13P haven't...

Yep, this extended return period is when buying direct from Apple- either Apple.com, or from a local store. Either way, you have until January to return a device, no restocking fee and really no questions asked at all even if opened/used.

I think most do buy these unlocked from Apple- you can buy from apple.com and return to a store, just as is the case during the usual 14 day window any other time of the year.

OK.....Day 1 of iPhone 14 mk2.

• I've switched off auto brightness and set to 50%.
• Reduce white point currently at 40%.
• Attention aware is off for Face ID.
• Reduce motion is on.
• I'm using a brighter colour wallpaper rather than my usual solid black.

As before I will only have evenings and weekends to trial as the phone is not leaving the house until I decided to keep. Wish me luck, for the third time (14, 14 Pro, 14 again).

This time I have a display that is warm red/yellow that shifts to blue/green. Last time my screen was very yellow.

Yes. Yes I'm an idiot. I've rolled the dice one last time - I had to, even if it put's to bed the entire 2022 series for another year. I'm still hoping.....

---------------------

Is it possible to create a shortcut that takes me straight to accessibility settings using the shortcuts app maybe?

I'm not talking about that triple click feature or the control centre button that switches white point off and on. I want to be able to go to the "reduce white point" menu quickly for when I want to tweak the levels. I just don't understand how to setup the shortcuts app at all.

I think it's the glare from these OLED screens. On my 2nd iPhone 14 now and immediately thought "damn, it's too bright". Even with 50% brightness with reduce white point, it's the glowing haze of light these displays emit that's still an issue for my eyes anyway. The screen almost looks like it's has a halo of light blasting off its surface while my 7 Plus LCD is calming and easy to view. There's something about it that makes me feel like my eyes are darting around. Ugh....

Sorry to hear your still feeling the negative side. Fingers crossed for you, it will hopefully subside.

Well, if you're an idiot, then, so am I.
I have a regular 14 arriving tomorrow. It's also my last dice roll as well.
I'm getting the plus version to try this time. Will keep everyone posted of my charade.

I have the iPhone 14 pro for a week now…
And I just don’t know if I am troubled…. AnThe uncertainty is totally stressing me out and is like a self fulfilling prophecy. I am so over focused and aware of my eyes and my head… and it certainly doesn’t help that I tend to be a bit of an hypochondriac…
But I just don’t know if my „symptoms“ (mainly dry eyes and maybe a hint of a very slight headache) are real and caused by the phone or just by working concentrated for 8hours…
I definitely had way more severe symptoms from the iPhone Xs… but still…

I would love to upgrade from my 12pro… but it’s still a lot of money even if I plan on trading my old one in… I don’t wanna regret it and get more severe symptoms later on, or just be unable to properly use my phone like I am used to…

It’s really driving me crazy, that just because I forgot about the holiday return period and therefor buying the phone 2 days to early, I am probably going to return it next Monday…

(Sorry… I just had to rant… 😤😫)

I, too, would love to know if this is possible. Figure some of us might be getting fast at this, but it would be nice to not have to tap and scroll so many times to get to it.

Yes, I was starting to wonder about that as well!! It just seems to have a bite to it, kind of sharp on the eyes and it may not even be about the PWM.

When I had a 12 Mini back when it was released, I bought a privacy screen protector and that helped a bit as it darkened the screen just a bit. Not sure if it makes enough of a difference that it would help anyone else, and I may have adjusted and been fine with out it, who knows.

Experiment. Thought we all agreed to call these experiments. (Maybe the agreement just happened within my house. 🤔 ) Still, I refuse to call all of us idiots. May feel like we are, but I’m not encouraging that kind of denigration.

Good luck. I do think the 14 Plus is the best pick because it's cheaper and lighter than Pro Max plus you get the best battery life, all while enjoying an iPhone with the correct width for reading text (less reflow).

I was definitely singling myself out as I clearly have very, very sensitive vision. And after 5 years of trying to use these damn OLED phones, it should have taught me something.....😵‍💫 Even the Pro ipads seem to bother my eyes but this maybe the 120hz refresh which I actually find effects how I see the rest of the world after using.

With the positive notes here about the regular non-pro 14, I am tempted to pick one up at my local Apple store and try it side by side with my SE, to see for a few weeks how it works out for me. I suppose given the eSIM nonsense that would be involved, I could just use it at home for a couple of weeks, still using my SE for calls and texts and when leaving the house- until I decide if the 14 is indeed the phone I'm going to keep.
