Reporting in after five days with the SE 2022. I'm happy to report it's been wonderful. No issues with the screen, size is great and battery is actually a slight improvement over the aging XR battery. I will say, I can tell a difference between the XR and SE screens. It's very similar to the difference I see between my 2017 10.5" iPad Pro and my M2 11" iPad Pro. It's almost like the new screens have better contrast and the colors are ever so slightly different. Granted, if I didn't have them side-by-side, I wouldn't notice. But it does indicate something is slightly different about the newer LCDs. I think they look a bit better, but perhaps that's because the color space is being stretched and is causing some people issues with dithering?

The other big, unexpected upgrade from the XR to the SE3 - the camera! I mean, I always knew the XR wasn't the best camera thanks to missing out on some of the newer processing, but wow is the SE an improvement. Everything about it is a noticeable step up, and I'm really enjoying being able to set color profiles before taking a photo. I guess my camera standards were lower than I thought, haha.
Can you live with the smaller screen ?

Yep. Thankfully it renders text the same size as the XR so it's just less screen real estate. I don't care about that, I just need to be able to focus on the screen. I find it easier to read the screen on the SE than the 6.1 OLED devices. Tho I wouldn't be upset if they came out with a 5.7" LCD model. But sadly that's a device that will likely only exist in my dreams, haha.

Which was worse for your eyes ? 14 or the pros ?

14 Pro was the worst by far. It was noticeable immediately and I was having a hard time getting through the setup. I couldn't focus on the screen and I was getting a strange, almost dizzy feeling. I never tried out the 14 Pro Max other than in store a few times. The 14 Plus was better and the super large screen solved most of the focusing issues. But I was still getting tension headaches after a couple of days. The 14 seemed the best of the bunch in not causing headaches, but I was having issues keeping focus when reading text on that one. If no other options were available, I would likely go with the 14 and just bump the font size up wherever I could.

Agreed, I had a terrible time with the 14 Pro. There’s just something overwhelmingly awful about they way that screen is tuned/engineered. It still bothered me in two different store environments (T-Mobile and Apple stores) while the other 14 models, including the 14 Pro Max, didn’t seem so bad.

Figures I would’ve gone for the most personally-bothersome of the bunch, but as it stands I’m happy I was able to return it without much of a loss (T-Mobile restocking fee, etc.) or doubt in my mind and I’m happy with my 13 mini. :)

The third-gen SE is very much an example of “third time’s the charm”—you made a great choice and I’m happy it sounds like you love it and you’re comfortable with it. I honestly really hate the 6-8/SE chassis design but even I can set that aside for what is objectively a grand phone. In fact in many ways the experience of using the device itself it so good that it makes me even sometimes appreciate a design I’ve resented for a number of years.

Agreed. 14 is the best of the bunch for me as well.

That’s what I was afraid of. Thanks for the confirmation.

Hold up. Can’t one just erase to factory setting and restore from a backup that had iOS15?

I gave the wrong info.
Yes currently if you have a backup file that was from iOS 15, you SHOULD be able to erase and set up your phone that just got updated to iOS 16 back to iOS 15.

That would need to be a computer based backup I presume? My only backup is via iCloud.

Okay so this is your takeaway. You mentioned earlier that you’ve learned not to screw up again by updating, I’m paraphrasing of course. But I think there is a more positive and possibly helpful lesson: Back up to a computer. I make both iCloud and computer backups. My learning this lesson was also unpleasant. So now I have the automatic daily iCloud backups, and then once a week (when I change my bed sheets,) I plug in my phone to back up to a computer.

Hope things get better for you and your phone. 👌🏻

Well ladies and gents, I managed to secure this 14 Pro. Not my 1st choice in color but not scared to flex the purple. I will set it up tomorrow and start the journey. While I don't have high hopes, there is a lot riding on this because it's the last 14 model I will try. I will be reporting back.

You owned 14PM and 14 like 14 pro or judging by store small usage ? If not can you share again your experience between 14 normal and 14 pro max ?

Which are the previous 14s you tried ?

No; I bought and tried and then returned a 14 Pro which was terrible to my eyes. The only in-person experiences I’ve had with the other 14-series phones have been in-store and brief yes, but I’ve been able to tell in those moments that the 14 Pro is still terrible and that the other 14 devices are varying degrees of noticeably less terrible.

I’ve tried the 14 PM. It was the best PWM experience I’ve had yet. But I decided I’d like a more compact phone so I’m really hoping for a miracle. I’ve put off setting it up almost 48 hours now.
Have you also tried 14 or 14 plus ?

I Tried the 14 and 14 plus in the store. I had a better PWM experience with the 14 pro. But I only tested them like 10-15 mins. I can use the 14 pro like 40 min with reduction white point enabled before my eyes get tired. I want to keep the 14p so bad. It's such beautiful phone than my old 11. But is it really worth the risk to **** up my eyes.

Are you hoping for an average that will help conclude which iphone 14 has the most comfortable PMW? This year, more than ever before, I see that the 14 series has random results for most of us sensitive to PWM, even down to the fact that the same model can have different results across multiple devices (screen lottery).

You really have to buy and try to know, and I'm aware that returns are not an option for some. The fact that some have given up on the 14 series and have moved to trialing a 13 or 12 with better results shows the randomness. With this in mind I would conclude this is another bad year for PWM.

Hello just a question

My pwm occured with the first iphone x

It wasnt ever any pains or nasuea

Jus a general uneasy feeling as opposed to using an lcd

Not even eye strain but a weird focus issue

But by reading tbis forum i think i suffer pwm

Can someone confirm what symptons they have?

Alot of people say thier eyes burn mine dont but i have dry eyes

Sorry for asking again. You also owned 14 plus, 14 pro and pro max ?
The 14 Pro Max is the only phone I have not tried. I've tried two pros and I have also tried the 14+ and the regular 14.
My PWM symptoms are more motion sickness or nausea, with some eye strain if I have a long session with the phone. I typically don't get headaches like some folks on here. The pros were very inconsistent for me. Sometimes I would feel like I did OK with them and other times my motion sickness would really kick up. I don't know if it has something to do with the variable refresh rate? The 14+ started off good and the screen was incredible, but to my surprise, it was the only one that started to give me something close to headaches so I sent it back right away.

My last effort with this whole thing is trying a regular 14 again right now. I don't want to give anyone any false hope, but this current 14 is the best out of all of them I've tried. I've only had it for four or five days and I have not moved my Sim into it. I'm just easing into it. When I first got it, I put my standard glass screen protector on it. And even though I could tell it was better, I was getting familiar motion sickness. So, I tried an anti-glare, matte screen protector. For me, it really reduced whatever symptoms I'm having. Now, I'm not saying that antiglare screen protector has anything to do with PWM. I acknowledge that I am PWM sensitive because LCD screens just don't bother me in any way shape or form.
What I am saying is, I think it's a cluster of effects, and for me putting a glossy screen protector over an OLED screen seems to really magnify reflections, and therefore motion sickness, or other cyber sickness symptoms such as dizziness. I imagine running the phone without a screen protector could have some benefit for me as well, but I'm a little paranoid. The anti-glare, matte screen protector has really knocked down those symptoms for me. But as I said, I'm being very patient with this because I have a long time to return it and the 11 is working pretty well.

In fact, I fully expect that this could be returned in the next couple of weeks, and definitely the last time I mess with an OLED screen from this series. I'm kind of counting on that, so anything that would deviate from that would be a complete surprise.

In summary, members have experienced:
- dry eyes
- eye strain
- pain behind eyes
- pain in eyes
- one sided headaches
- head pressure
- migraines
- motion sickness
- nausea
- dizziness
- knot in chest
- vertigo

We are all slightly different and all have experienced something on this list to which as of now, we attribute to PWM, screen brightness, shimmering, variable refresh rates, etc.

Excellent summary!

Might I add for some folks nervousness, agitation and even some affects with sleep quality. I remember reading an article on OLED screens and PWM that was translated from Chinese and one of the folks said if you have PWM and use an OLED screen it’s not for people with “fast nervous systems“. That kind of made sense.

Sounds good, wat kind of protector did you use? I am using the XTR2 from zagg on my 14 right now, it seems that it also is anti reflective and blocks some blue light.
