The XR only got 3GB but the 11 got upgraded to 4GB. I think that's the biggest thing that got missed back in the day during comparisons of the XR and the 11. Most focused on the camera, but the real story was the RAM bump. Considering Apple stuck with 4GB as standard for a few years on the regular line, I think the 11 being at the early end of that jump up to 4GB will make it one of the longest supported iPhones ever.

But yeah, you have to be down with the chunky factor on the XR and 11, haha. They are most definitely larger than the regular 6.1" phones of today. And they make the SE feel downright tiny in the hand by comparison.
Ah I was mistaken then- I didn't realize they went to 4GB that far back!
It's interesting then that they stuck with 4GB through the 11, 12, and 13 series before finally going to 6 on the 14. What a span!

Indeed, it was a long run with 4GB for sure! The iPhone 11 was the first standard line iPhone to release with 4GB and the SE 2022 was the last. So really, the 11 and SE aren't as far apart as they seem. And I think that will show in the long-term support schedules for both.

I’m using an 8+ that ‘only’ has 3GB Ram and I never get even close to using it all even with lots of apps left open.
I think the extra RAM is only needed for the fancier cameras on the newer models. I know that I personally have zero need for 4GB of RAM.

iPhone 14 is still giving me migraines by itself, with auto-brightness and/or RWP.

Bye iPhone 14. It’s been nice knowing ya, but I won’t let it give me headaches for two more months straight.

Beyond ecstatic to hear others are having luck. Well wishes @jm31828 on that iPhone 13 Mini, the underdog of the modern iPhone lineup, and @happy orchard on making iPhone 14 Pro Max work for you. @GrumpyMom I hope you don’t compromise your health to make a modern iPhone occasionally usable.

My words of advice are to leave auto-brightness on as it’s an essential device function IMO, unless you have no headaches at all above a certain brightness level, and to return it if there are any signs of headaches—they won’t get better over time.

This iPhone 14 is nearly making me black out, so I’ll be promptly resetting it. Never again with an Apple product that has PWM. See y’all on iPhone 25 with the flicker-free Accessibility option.

Yeah, I never had any issues with 3GB on my XR. However, Apple tends to draw the line for iOS updates based on RAM more than CPU. So phones with 3GB will likely drop out of iOS updates a few years before 4GB models. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone 11 gets two more iOS updates beyond where the XR gets dropped just because of that extra RAM.

So sorry to hear that. :(
Good advice you have for the rest of us, though- use it the way we truly should with no workarounds- no setting brightness high snd burning eyeballs just to avoid a headache… if it works for us great- and if not, it’s not worth dealing with.

I’ll take your advice snd make that change as I continue testing my 13 mini.

Thanks for all the input re: iPhone 11.

I'm torn as I've never been fond of the 11 size and thickness - it just doesn't feel as premium as iPhones before it. This is what keeps my interest in the SE 2022 as it's thin with the classic solid design that I find more appealing even if the screen is much smaller. It's the usual issue for me: I have two options, don't really want either so I can't (don't/won't) decide. 🤦‍♂️ But as Siamese_Dream said, concessions need to be made.......

The one thing the SE really has going for it is the A15 chip, being faster and more modern, so there would be a longer supported lifespan on an SE3 vs the 11.

And I thought the 11 only had 3 GB RAM?

Lastly, it depends on preference- some hate the size of the 11, with it being so big (I'm one of them). I really love the SE in comparison- and the Mini is actually perfect as far as screen size and overall device size- just wish it had an LCD screen instead. lol (though as noted in another post, surprisingly so far my new 13
Mini is not bothering me)

Good news on the 13 Mini so far. What a stunning iPhone size, giving the nostalgia of the iPhone 5 with the modern twist of an all-screen design = perfect.

Looking at my XR and SE 2022 next to each other, the build quality between the two is basically the same. The XR just feels a bit less pulled together with those big bezels. I will say it has been a breath of fresh air to have a small and light phone again. And I really don't feel like I'm missing anything with the smaller screen either. If anything, this entire PWM journey has made me realize my phone needs are fairly basic and the SE really is the right device for me. It's not an easy choice because the 11 and SE both have solid pros going for them. I wish you luck in your decision making process!

On my 14th day of iPhone 14 trial----I decided to keep it..for now. Sending in my old 64gb 11 today for the trade in. IPhone 14 has not been a completely smooth ride for me, I cannot even say if I will be able to use it for the long run unfortunately. But the 64gb 11 simply is not usable for my needs anymore(kicking myself for not getting a bigger storage when I first bought it). So here is my plan, I will continue to use the 14 till the point that I decided enough is enough. Then I will give this 14 to my husband(I even bought the space gray version to be prepared to give it to him), and trade in his 12 mini for a refurbished 11 with 128 or 256gb storage----it would be nice to have a new 11 but it seems to be sold out everywhere. Or I hold off to see if there's a new SE in the spring if I can handle my 14 till then..

As for my experience with 14 so far, my first 2-3 days were generally fine, then I would have headaches off and on, also slight dizziness. Some days are better than others but I don't want to say I had any day that's completely symptom free. It's way better than my experience with the 14 pro though, with that my dizziness and fullness in the head were really getting to me to the unbearable level, so hopefully folks with less sensitivity to PMW would potentially make the 14 or 14 plus work for them..

I recorder 2 videos. One normal and one on slow motion. The order is:
14PM,14,14plus,14pro,13mini,12 and 11.

iPhone 11 had no moving lines on neither of 2 videos. AT ALL. 14 pro max had also no moving lines on video recording but it had the thick ones on slow video.

First of all can anyone explain to me why 14PM didn’t have anything at video rec but it had on slow rec ?

I also recorded Galaxy S22+….. it was by far the worst. It was flashing all over the place like crazy. Samsung Flip 4 was normal like the iPhones.

The color tint on off didn’t change the way lines were behaving. On the other hand reduce white point made the lines thinner on the 14PM.

From what i saw 14 and 14 plus had the thinnest and slowest moving lines. Same with 13 pro and 13 pro max which were a little bit thicker.

14 pro was the worst. Thickest and fastest moving lines. Thick lines on 14PM too but slower moving. 13 mini had thin lines like 14/14 plus but were moving fast like 14 pro. 12 was close to 14/14plus but a little bit quicker and thicker.

Judging by that simplistic method it seemed like best experience would be 14,14 plus or 14PM. The worst is 14 pro. The overall best iPhone 11.

(You can all read my previous post about my headaches and the lifelong condition its given me)

A few months ago I bought an Macbook pro 14" M1.

I bought it to replace an old iMac and went for a laptop/monitor setup so I can connect my partners works windows laptop to the same monitor.

Since I bought it, it has lived connected to the monitor.

I suddenly had a thought about the fact it has PWM and last night took it into another room and spent a while processing photos in Lightroom (I am a photographer)

20 mins in and the headache and eye ache were too much. I have basically bought a non-transportable transportable laptop 😩.

Its still been a good purchase as its a beast and the flexability of a separate monitor is cool.

Are you by chance using a glass screen protector?

If so, consider removing it and go screen protector free, or get an anti-glare protector. That really cut down on the nausea and dizziness for me. These OLED screens are quite reflective on their own compared to LCDs, at least for me. Adding another, glare ridden glass protector made it worse, again for me.

Here is the one I am trying, it is a film, though, not glass (it says it is for the 13 but fits the 14 perfectly):

What you can see in slow motion is only a synchronization issue with the recording camera shutter (240 FPS) and the flickering frequency of the other phone. It doesn’t really determine anything significant.
If a screen flickers at 240 Hz, it will be in perfect sync with the slow motion camera shutter and the video will look buttery smooth. No lines. Also other frequencies will synchronize too - looking almost perfect.
But the screen is still a flickering bastard.

Using a slow motion camera may detect flickering, but it can’t reveal if the offending display will be bothersome to look at. Only your eyes can do that.

Interesting technical description- thanks for sharing!
I had a 13 Pro for the last year, and it was blowing my mind how it showed absolutely zero flicker on slow-mo video that I would do from other phones- it looked as flicker-free as an LCD on slow-mo, but yet other phones I've tried that with- my current 13 Mini, a 14 Pro I tested out, my wife's XS Max, and of course several others at the Apple store- have so much flicker that shows on these videos. I knew the 13 Pro was not flicker-free, but it was so odd to me that it wasn't showing up on video!

I bought the iPhone 14 pro and tried it for couple hours and tried it also with reducing white point option. My eyes get tired and i get a dizzyness feeling. Unfortunately i'm returing the 14p and sticking with my old iPhone 11. With an cunky outdated desgin and bad battery life. However I have to say the 14p is better than the XS and 12 series for me. With those phones i got instantly eyestraind and headeache. Well let's hope the 15 or the 16 series will be even better and we can use new modern phones witouth problems :D

Well let's hope the 15 or the 16 series
Your hopes then will surely be dashed. A more realistic timeline is more like the iPhone 23 at the very soonest.
Eyeball ripping displays (which we currently have) are not even on ’s radar as an issue. Yeah sure, some of the engineers and likely even Tim Apple have heard about it, but there aren’t enough people screaming about it for them to change their course — likely because they are fully committed to OLED displays with billions of dollars invested in the technology & manufacturing and OLED displays REQUIRE PWM flickering to adjust brightness.

Well the 14p is so much better for me than the XS and 12 series. I just watched youtube video's for like 40 minutes and after 40 minutes my eyes got irritated. Before that it was just like in couple minutes. I also turned off the pro motion so i also didnt felt any dizzynes or headeache. If we keep complaining on the website of apple https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone/. Maybe they will improve it much sooner than the iphone 23 ;)

Because i also read some Chinese manufacturers are using DC dimming on their OLED screens. Or use above the 1k hz flicker. So we should keep hoping :)

Yeah, I never had any issues with 3GB on my XR. However, Apple tends to draw the line for iOS updates based on RAM more than CPU. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone 11 gets two more iOS updates beyond where the XR gets dropped just because of that extra RAM.
With the 3GB IPhone 7 Plus dropped for iOS 16 I think it becomes more and more strategic decisions what’s going to be dropped and what not. Dropped users are potential new buyers.

True. The iPhone 7 not receiving iOS 16 is a head scratcher. From what I read, the reason given was they wanted to phase out any non "bionic" A series chips. But I just don't believe the A10 Fusion with 3GB is really that much slower than the A11 Bionic with 3GB. So yeah, you may be onto something. Perhaps the new line will be specific CPU-level features that they randomly decide are required moving forward.

As somebody who has had to set aside a MacBook Air M1 due to eye strain problems, I have considered myself fortunate to not have many issues with my iPhone 12 Pro, possibly thanks to adjusting White Point to keep brightness at maximum. With this being known I have held off from updating to iOS 16 for months, due to uncertainty that it might mess up a good thing, so to speak. Well, two days ago without thinking it through I considered that I hadn’t seen any complaints of the iOS in and of itself causing eye strain so I tapped on the update when it finally gave me the red notification on my settings app. Now, I feel that was a mistake. It’s not as bad as my Mac, but it’s irritating my eyes, making them feel fatigued and dry in short order.

My question is, can I go back to iOS 15? I think the answer is no based upon my research, but I thought I’d ask those more knowledgeable in tue subject.

Thank you!

My question is, can I go back to iOS 15?

Nope. It’s now impossible.
Embrace iOS 16 with all its growing pains now since you’re stuck on it.

I’m using an iPhone 8+ on iOS 14 and everything runs fine. There’s no way I’m ever going to update it. It stays on iOS 14 forever.

That’s what I was afraid of. Thanks for the confirmation.

Reporting in after five days with the SE 2022. I'm happy to report it's been wonderful. No issues with the screen, size is great and battery is actually a slight improvement over the aging XR battery. I will say, I can tell a difference between the XR and SE screens. It's very similar to the difference I see between my 2017 10.5" iPad Pro and my M2 11" iPad Pro. It's almost like the new screens have better contrast and the colors are ever so slightly different. Granted, if I didn't have them side-by-side, I wouldn't notice. But it does indicate something is slightly different about the newer LCDs. I think they look a bit better, but perhaps that's because the color space is being stretched and is causing some people issues with dithering?

The other big, unexpected upgrade from the XR to the SE3 - the camera! I mean, I always knew the XR wasn't the best camera thanks to missing out on some of the newer processing, but wow is the SE an improvement. Everything about it is a noticeable step up, and I'm really enjoying being able to set color profiles before taking a photo. I guess my camera standards were lower than I thought, haha.

Hold up. Can’t one just erase to factory setting and restore from a backup that had iOS15?
I’m not certain. Though, all of my backups are via iCloud, which might eliminate said possibility.

While it’s my fault for updating, it’s quite frustrating and annoying that a simple software update that Apple encourages us to apply has now seemingly rendered my phone far less usable than it was before. I don’t really want to go down the road of trying phone after phone, though my only other option might be to just keep at it with the 12 pro and maybe it’ll teach my eyes a lesson or some such nonsense.
