I returned it on day 4. I want 100% pain free experience. But hats off to 14PM….. my best iPhone oled experience by far!
Have you gone back to the 11 or the SE?

Also, what type of pain was it? was it the back of your head, similar to a tension head-ache?

I've found as you noted it doesn't make your eyes hurt - it effects the back of your head/neck area

very sad that apple is sleeping here .. the new samsung s23 models are supposed to come on the market with 2000hz and integrated dc dimming .. when will apple be sensible and follow suit.?? the new huawei oled no longer has a measurable pwm.. please take an example. everyone else does it better. Pixel 7 Pro is also much less eye strain..

I know that saying this is considered sacrilegious by many on this forum, but the S23 is looking like a fantastic phone and Samsung devices/Android has really come a long way. I was on an Galaxy Note Ultra before my current phone and it was never anything but smooth. The only consistent issue I had with it was notifications. I am the only person in my house who's all Apple. Everyone else has Samsung phones of one type or another. If I hadn't decided to go with the iPhone, I'd be getting the S23 Ultra, or whatever the large S23 will end up being named. If the S23 or another phone like that can be used without causing you the issues that Apple screens do, then you could do a lot worse. I know that you'd hate to lose the iPhone but it probably would be only temporary, until Apple can fix this. Maybe panels with dc dimming will make their way to iPhones some day. For many of you, it seems like you're being tortured by your use of iPhones unless they're older models.

As Apple use Samsung displays it's almost certain they will use this panel but they always tweak it to their own specification. I doubt Apple will use DC dimming though.

Until we get real world reports on the new Samsung displays I will remain sceptical about very high Hz on paper and the positive experience this might bring to sensitive users. The ipad Pro 12.9 miniLED has very high Hz but still unusable for some. The screen is still flickering after all.

Is this confirmed about new screens ?

Back to 11. But i have noticed that when i use it more than 4 hours a day it also give me some minor head pain.

As for 14PM. It wasn’t exactly headache. Just minor discomfort on the middle of my head

The 12.9 is also dithering free, at least according to Notebookcheck. The PWM amplitude of the 12.9 is very aggressive, probably contributing to the eye strain on that device. If you ask me amplitude is more important that frequency when it comes to PWM.

I recently sold my S22 Ultra and bought an iPhone 11 for my eye health. The S22 was killing my eyes and I didn't want any long term health complications, but if Samsung brings 2000hz "mild" amplitude dimming to their phones this year I may try an S23, but I'm liking my iPhone 11 way more than I thought I would minus the battery and crappy modem, iOS has come a long way since I last had an iPhone.

The Realmi 10 pro plus is the first OLED to get a TUV flicker free certificate. It´s really cool to see this is happening. When this phone comes available in EU i will buy directly to try!

I am very hopefull for the s23 ultra, if this would be usable for me i would be very happy to finally use a flagship phone!

The realme 10 Pro+ 5G features 2160Hz PWM dimming technology, and is the first OLED phone in the industry to receive the TÜV Rheinland Flicker Free Certificate. The 10 Pro+ 5G also supports hardware low blue light, for an added layer of eye protection.
*2160Hz PWM Dimming automatically turns on in low-light environments.

Interesting but need to dig in more. Sorry to rain on the parade....

"Realme says that the upcoming Realme 10 Pro+ 5G will be the first OLED screen in the world to receive the TUV Rheinland Flicker Free Certificate. The device will come with 2160 Hz PWM dimming technology for better eye protection. PWM or Pulse-width modulation is a common type of dimming used to adjust the current in white-LED driver devices. "Compared to 480Hz PWM dimming that is standard in even flagship smartphone displays, such as Samsung S22 Ultra, the 2160Hz PWM dimming of the 10 Pro+ 5G offers a 4.5x improvement in dimming efficiency," Realme says. The company adds that it is even 1.7x higher than the IEEE International Lighting Standard of 1250Hz, for true industry-leading eye protection."

This doesn't read as flicker-free, just a very high hz flicker - an improvement over other OLED phones but kinda false advertising with a "Flicker Free Certificate". Not convinced as the iPad Pro 12.9 MiniLED PMW is 19190 Hz and annoys my eyes. Will be happy to be proved wrong and hope this is the start of better things to come. I'm likely to try an S23 Ultra to see if things have improved and pray if they have that the iPhone 15 will adopt Samsungs new displays.

Yeah, unless the amplitude is pretty much static it's not flicker free. Seems like another certification without real meaning.

Picked up a new iPhone 14 pro last night. Purchased it outright and did not activate it. 14 day return policy so figured I would test for a bit. Used the thing for about 5 mins and now have a bunch of light sensitivity and headache. Comical. Going to wait 2 days and try again to be sure but pretty sure I know the answer! Lol

Interesting - what symptoms did you have? any neck cramp/tension headaches?
With previous oled iPhones I got headaches, gritty eyes.
Pro Max 14 still gave me some grittyness first few weeks.
Seems like you can get used to it eventually.

Not convinced it was *just* pwm that was causing the issue (for me).
If I had to guess its also to do with the way the display is lighted. Oled seems to be brighter, as if your shining a light in your eyes.

Considering the current rumors are the iPhone SE4 (upgraded XR) seems to be cancelled, does anyone know where you can still buy a new 11?

Pretty sure Apple Stores stopped selling them when the 14s were introduced, and ATT told me they only sell them as prepaid phones that cannot be unlocked ever (strange). Best Buy was sold out as well.

Not a fan of buying used phones either, anyone know of a legitimate, non-eBay place still selling them new and unlocked?

So did anyone have a successful Apple extended return experience?
I would not expect anyone to have trouble returning an iPhone during the extended return window.

Sorry, I do not, but this serves as a reminder that for those who are satisfied with the current generation iPhone SE -- might be time to purchase an extra. This could be the last iPhone that doesn't use PWM for a long time.

I was in the same situation in November. There are some sellers on Ebay and other marketplaces selling "new" iPhone 11's, but I assume these are refurbished and resealed devices, not factory sealed new. I considered buying one of these (if it wasn't new I could have returned it) but I decided against it and bought a nice used one on Ebay for much less. I had Apple replace the battery and it works completely fine, looks and feels new.

If I were you I would try to go the used route. It initially may be difficult to find one in good condition at a reasonable price as many of them are overpriced. It took me a few days to find the right one but I have no regrets going used. I would rather have a nicely treated untampered with used one than a sketchy "new" third party refurb. Apple occasionally stocks refurb iPhone 11's and if you can somehow manage to get lucky and buy one that is the way to go.

On a side note LTE seems to kill this things battery for some reason. On WIFI it seems to last almost as long as my previous S22 Ultra which is nuts, but with cellular there is no comparison. I assume it's the inefficient Intel modem. Just light use on LTE gets it pretty warm, google maps is another story. The SE3 is likely better because it has a Qualcomm modem but the battery is much smaller than the 11, maybe negating the difference. Something to consider if you don't mind the various downgrades of SE.

I've done with my experimentation on the 14s having tried almost of all them now and they all give me issues. It seems to be a tension in my temples going back to my neck which isn't due to prolonged use and motion sickness / light headedness. I just don't get this with the LCD 11. But I want a better camera and screen. Has anyone been comfortable with an android OLED? I tried the Samsung s22 Ultra and the Pixel 6 and 7 pros and both gave me issues though not as bad. The only one I have found I'm comfortable with for whatever reason is the Sony Xperia 1 iv but unfortunately the still and video cameras don't seem that good - at least in auto mode which is basically what 99% of my shots will be.

When you say 14s even the pros ?

Is there anyone here that was completly find with the X?

I had it for 2 years and it never gave me any trouble at all.

Very strange that it is future models that caused harm, especially with reports that the newer models have a better PWM result.

I am an Apple fanboy and gutted that it looks like I'll be moving watch and phone away from Apple this year if the 15's are no different.

I'll still stick with my Mac which is an awesome bit of kit.

At this point I think I just need to try one to see if it'll work for me.

What model are people having the best luck with (if any)? 14 or 14 Pro and standard or max?
