I would add my similar experience: bought XS two days ago and returned it today. The screen made my eyes very uncomfortable. Also used Galaxy S4 (very early stage OLED screen model?) for more than 6 months back in 2014, and I can't recall any eye strain issue at that time.

Bought iPhone xs max and have same problem. I'm really suprised because I wasn't aware of it at all (heard about antena and charing problems[btw noticed charging problem also but its nothing comparing to headache]). In past I had galaxy s4 with amoled and strangely didn't have problem with that phone. I guess I will have to return it and wait for lcd iphone xr.

The longer I wait for the iPhone XR, the more I think that my iPhone 7 is perfectly adequate.

It’s not too big, no PWM, no Face ID and IR blasting my eyeballs, no notch, etc. I really hope Apple figures this stuff out.
I have the same thoughts, pre X hardware is very very capable, this is why I have just upgraded from a 6 to an 8+. Less risks - more matured devices, the peak of a design.

Also there may be some unofficial informations that the XR won't have PWM controlled display but personally I would prefer to be sure before purchasing it.

Ditto here! I returned my X for the 8+ due to headaches and am starting to feel the same as you. I may just hang on to the + and wait until next year. Hopefully Apple fixes this crap for 2020.

Yes, indeed.
I have misunderstood about it.
I thought it was about general references from anyone, not from major news services.
Fast reading victim.
I 'm very sorry, I apologize, especially to kerplunknet.:)

From Apple news sources, MacWorld had an article about the headaches.
https://www.macworld.co.uk/news/iphone/iphone-x-problems-3639808/
Its ok but all I can find is this thread and some things on reddit. I’ll check out your link thank you, but Macrumors acknowledges all these other issues I wish they would just write something about this!

I really am feeling eye strain while looking at my Xs Max. I've never had this happen on any of my Android phones so it has me a little concerned.

Well, half a day without looking at the Xs Max and no eye strain what so ever after using my monitors and iPad all morning.

Question for those of you with the X that had this issue - Did you ever get used to it and the eye strain go away? I read a few things on Reddit for OLED TVs and folks advised they got used to the display and wasn't an issue after a few weeks.

No had my X for couple of weeks(last yr)and the eye strain never went away... It just not worth it. I’m shocked that there are some here that are willing risk their health so they could use a smartphone.....

Apple just released a document that says minor to medium migraines might occur when using the X.
so this is normal.
Can you supply a link to that document or the document itself

"very uncomfortable" - that's what I experience as well. it looks like text on a slab of white. No depth whatsoever. I guess that's the emissive screen technology of OLED. I have a 55" OLED TV - have no issues w/it. When I went back to my 8 plus, it was like putting on a slipper that fits just right. No where near as clear or as fast, but comfortable. Will consider XR.

A good question is what exactly eyestrain is. Here is a definition I found:

Eye strain, also known as asthenopia (from Greek asthen-opia, ἀσθεν-ωπία, "weak-eye-condition"), is an eye condition that manifests through nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, pain in or around the eyes, blurred vision, headache, and occasional double vision.

For me, I just felt queasy and uncomfortable looking at the screen where the content was primarily text which looks flat, like on a slab of white w/no depth. Videos, the home screen, control center, lock screen did not bother me at all. Nor did dark screens. Is that eye strain? Who knows?

How can minor to medium migraines be characterized as normal?
Because, Apple says so, is it normal? a health issue? And if you feel dizzy, and have a headache after using the phone and have an accident because of this, is this normal too?

I don't think that Apple would ever release a document like this...
[doublepost=1538588692][/doublepost]
I'm not sure if any of you have seen this, but this appears to be a Band-Aid to get around eye strain. I just found it, haven't had a chance to read it and certainly haven't had a chance to try it. YMMV

So eyestrain has been an issue since the X and Apple still hasn't made a software adjustment?

Eyestrain, to me, means my eyes literally hurt, feel odd especially when glancing up to look at something else, and a headache and nausea starts to set in. Those are the effects I feel from the iPhone Xs Max.

Of course, he was sarcastic, #16.
But still, there are posts asking for more details about this document.:)

It's not just a software adjustment, I'm afraid. Search for PWM, OLED iPhone X.

[doublepost=1538528653][/doublepost]Within a couple months of me switching to an iPhone X from an iPhone 7 my eyes have gone south. They used to be twice as good as my wife’s and now they are half as good as my wife’s. Especially after looking at the screen while trying to watch TV. Then they remain foggy. I think this phone might be destroying my eyesight because of the high powered screen?
Go to an ophthalmologist and get a very thorough eye exam. Make sure you don’t have any kind of eye damage. I kind of doubt pwm alone would actually physically harm your eyes, but there have not been the right kind of studies published on this particular iteration and use of the IR beams and their effects on the eyes.

Chances are you just have dry eyes from eye strain. Whenever I’ve complained about blurry vision to my ophthalmologist he’s noted I have dry eyes. But definitely get checked out by someone qualified to know, as I am just giving my best guess.

In the month that I had an X last time no physical damage to my eyes was found afterwards. In the few days I’ve had a Max it was more of a combination of eyes and brain not working together well anymore and resulting in migraine. I also became over sensitive to other light sources and screens that use pwm that don’t normally trouble me too much unless something else already primed me for a migraine.

So I ended up pretty sick after going to the grocery store and trying to shop under their lights. I got a migraine that messed up my speech.

As for why tech communities aren’t making as much noise on this subject as they are the other issues, well I’ve seen elsewhere on the forum at least one person who doesn’t suffer any ill effects making very disparaging remarks about this thread and its participants. There may be plenty of others out there who think we are in a “hypochondriac echo chamber” but are too polite to say.

So they let us commiserate here in our own little corner where we can’t ruin everyone else’s fun or bring down the wrath of the journalistic blacklist from Apple. Fine, I’ll take what I can get. I appreciate this corner. I know this issue doesn’t affect everyone and I don’t want to ruin people’s enjoyment of a beautiful phone.

So anyway I haven’t heard that Apple made an acknowledgement of this problem so now I’m going to check that.

I'm curious, how do the iPhone X/Xs/Xs max compare to other OLED displays? I have never heard of Samsung owners complaining of this for example?
Pixel 2 screen is almost as bad. I dont end up with migraines or heightened sensitivity to flicker from other sources like I did from the Max but my eyes water abs fatigue quickly looking at it.

I think one of my older Samsungs hurt to look at for very long. That was a couple of years ago. I can’t remember if it was a one of the Note 7’s I had or an S7 or S7 Edge. Because of the double recall I went through a few Samsung phones in a short period of time.

Edited to address chronic migraine sufferers who don’t seem affected...that’s great. We don’t really know enough about migraines and why triggers aren’t the same for everyone. My husband suffers from optical migraines and migraines with auras. He seems fine with these displays. He can’t stand VR though. I actually use VR to help me when migraines make me sick and dizzy. But VR makes my other family members sick and dizzy. It’s interesting.

I also noticed my Samsung LED TV is also flickering when you make a Slow Motion video..
Very very bad indeed.
And the TV has never bothered me (But it's PWM dimming, checked it)
Strange why the screen of the XS Max is a problem and the TV is not.

Maybe it's the Face id for me...

Never heard of 1 Red Drop. Is that a reputable site? Article sure is a scary topic, but does it have any validity or is it just fearmongering?

I don't know.
For sure there has not been any investigation about this new unlock feature.
Could be harmless or not... Time will tell
I unlock the phone many many times per day.

ixbt.com also measured the PWM of the Max. It appears almost identical to the XS and similar to the X.

ixbt.com posted their measurements of the PWM on iPhone XS:

For reference, here were their measurements of iPhone X:

Max forthcoming.

I juist send back my iPhone Xs because of mild eye strain problems.

I never had any problems with my iPhone 6 or iPad air 2. I dont have issues with my Samsung ks7000 led tv with pwm.

There is something strange with the iPhone xs screen. Even after looking A few seconds the screen makers me feel uneasy.

I hope the Xr is going to be fine. I hope its nog the face id.

I think some posts ago grumpymom or/and ooloo wrote that he had face id sensors covered and still got the apple's gift - eye strain.
Anyway there is a need of an extended study for the possible effects of this face id (ir) implementation.
