Question for those with the eye strain / headache issues, how long into using the phone before you notice it bothering you? I mean minutes into use or has it been instantly. I work in front of a computer all day and I'm not sure that is helping or hurting but due to some recent medical issues I've been getting migraines lately. I've yet to upgrade from my 8+ and just wondering if I even should at this point. Thanks all!

If you aren't in front of a computer, are you still getting migraines?
Regarding the iPhone x,xs for some people seconds are enough.

No I'm not, that's been one of the interesting factors. I have played with the Xs and Max in store for a bit and it hasn't bothered me, so I'm thinking I'm gonna jump on the wagon soon.

never instantly but with the iphone x and xs less than a minute

Thanks, good to know, I have used the Max is store for a bit and haven't had any issues so hopefully It's a separate issue.

I don't know.
For sure there has not been any investigation about this new unlock feature.
Could be harmless or not... Time will tell
I unlock the phone many many times per day.

A comprehensive research would be nice to have indeed. For after all, part of me thinks that sure Apple wouldn’t go all in on a technology that’s potentially harmful to their users, but on the other hand it’s the same Apple that’s offering a particularly problematic (to some) OLED implementation for the second year in a row even though other OLED phone manufacturers - while still having the same issue for the affected people to at least some degree - seem to have figured out less torturous implementations.

I do use Windows Hello face scanning on my Surface Book without issues, but I quickly abandoned Samsung’s iris scanner on my S8+ as it was causing noticeable discomfort in my eye. Luckily the S8+ still had also fingerprint scanner available so that I didn’t have to resort to constantly typing in my passcode.

While I’m interested in replacing my iPhone 8 with the iPhone Xr (not going to go with either Xs variant as I’ve had mild eye fatigue from the S8+ screen alone), but I’m not quite sure if I want to have FaceID bombarding my face and eyes with IR every time (read: way too often) I unlock my phone with long-term effects still unknown.

So glad I just returned my XS Max. I actually ended up going with an 8 Plus since it had True Tone (and the 7 Plus didn't).

I have the weird gene that says I'm predisposed to Macular Degeneration...I used the X for a year and had a lot of strange medical issues last year.

It all started towards the middle of November of 2017...I had owned the X for two weeks by then, but didn't put it together. Light headedness, fatigue, migraines, eye pain, etc. I had a bunch of medical test and everything was normal...MRIs, blood work, various specialists...nothing is medically wrong with me. I was even tested for Lyme disease (negative as well).

I'm not sure if it's the PWM or the Face ID...but to be safe I downgraded to an 8 Plus. Hopefully since it doesn't do PWM or Face ID it will help those issues resolve...

I haven’t read all of the pages in this thread but from what I’ve gathered, some say it doesn’t work at all because the PWM is in play at all brightness levels on the iPhone. Others have mentioned that even if you do try the workaround, it’s constant cat and mouse making adjustments based on the surroundings and impact on brightness requirements.

I don’t know why people think it could be faceID its just a few infrared dots being projected at your face for a few seconds. I’m no expert but that doesn’t sound harmful. The flickering pulsing display that you have to interact with constantly on the phone is the issue

By a few dots do you mean 30,000? And with some settings, Face ID is always scanning to ensure you're looking at the screen (to keep it lit up) so it doesn't turn off if you're reading something.

Well after I thought that disabling 'Attention Aware' did the trick....nope....eyes in total discomfort, fuzzy vision and constant twitch in the right eye

Adjusted every possible setting including the white point tweak referenced above to no avail...

Galaxy Note9 and prior Sammies had no effect on my eyes.....The X and XS have both played havoc

Bought an iPhone 8 Plus (and returning the XS)...eyes have already started to feel a lot lot better

Love the form factor and screen clarity etc of OLED ...may try the XR when it;s out

I think that you have to check asap your computer's display specifications.
Do you need reading glasses?

Wow! I´m not alone.

Just a few seconds with the X and my eyes and head burned out, never happended with the 8, 7, 6S, SE...

The XR looks great but it's too big and heavy for me, wish they made it with the X size.

Maybe next year, now I´m going back to the 8...

Has anybody who this has affected gotten over it? I love the phone but the eyestrain and headaches are getting to be too much, and I've only got another 4 days before I can return it.

Do you eventually adjust?

I never think of that, don't negotiate your eyes for a smartphone.

I returned it and go for the 7, the 8 seems like "old design" and doesn't justify the price (for me)

Let´s see the XR on hands or the 2019 offert

Super bummed, XS Max is definitely affecting my eyes. I was hoping it was all in my head from reading these Macrumors forums, but it is not. Noticeable pressure behind my eyes (no headache) when using the phone for more than a few minutes. I legitimately don't want to look at the phone any more... even though it really is my perfect device. Did a test run yesterday without looking at the phone and didn't have any eye issues what so ever.

Just asked my company about how we do returns. No idea what I am going to do next. I was upgrading from an iPhone6S 16GB and will be hard pressed to go back due to lack of storage. My company still does the new iPhone every 2 year thing, so not sure I want to change to the XR and blow the upgrade on a less than 1080P screen. I guess if I can get this XS Max returned, I will have to wait until the XR is in stores and see it in person. Don't think I can go another year with the 6S and not be able to take phone pictures of my newborn daughter due to lack of storage!

SO bummed!

Go with the 7 in 32GB, it's really cheap now in Amazon for example. And use Google Photos or iCloud to avoid the storage problem.

The XR is less than 1080 but we have to see in person how it feels, maybe it´s a great screen and with no eye strain...

If they´ll go all Oled next year I´ll have to say goodbye to iPhone, unless they change the PWM technology that causes the strain.

Curious if those having issues are tested with Face ID totally off? OLED is quite widespread and I find it hard to believe that iPhones are much worse in this regard to the many androids out there using OLED?

I am thinking of returning my XS max for other reasons but have been considering more and more the impact of Face ID, some dismiss it (more IR going out in the sun etc.) but if you face and eyes are getting zapped dozens of times a day it is something to consider for sure.

Honestly I have found Face ID to be terrific on the X and Xs Max but I would happily revert to a FPS. Still think a FPS is quicker overall even if FID is more passive.

I am in the exactly same situation with you but with Iphone Xs. Since I already gave away my Iphone 7 I am kind of forced to upgrade.

While I dont really mind about the resolution and knowing the fact that Xr should be perfectly capable phone I will really miss the dual camera and more compact size of the Xs. Therefore after Xs going to Xr feels somewhat lackluster update from Iphone 7.

I really wish Apple would have included 4gb of memory and dual camera with the Iphone Xr as many of the competing products have that even in the midrange phones. Though going to Android phones is not really an option as I really like the gesture based UI ans Ios in general.

I used the X for 2 days and never set the Face ID, I just leave it with code and to ask for it every 4 hours that it´s the max. If I could I´ll leave it without secure system...

But I didn't "block" the camera so I don´t know if the scan was working even with Face ID Off

One thing I know, that using the 8 back leave me free of strain in two minutes.

Going to try turning FACEID off today and will see.

Earlier in this thread, admittedly I’m not sure which pages so I apologize, but I did read others stating they went so far as to physically block Face ID and they still experienced symptoms. For what it’s worth.

If you record the screen with another phone (or just watch trough the camera) you´ll see the lines passing by.

Maybe it's not a problem for all, of course, but for me was a no thinking decision, the X went to his box immediately.
