Will you be annoyed by the 326 PPI?
Hard to say until I see it, reviewers say it looks very good. I settled on an 8 after I sent X back, I would like a bigger screen with smaller footprint than 8+

I was at the Mall the other day but forgot to check if the Apple store had one on display yet.

15 days and counting until the XR is released....hopefully a phone screen that doesn’t cause ocular pain or headaches
Yup, I'm really looking forward to the XR. I'm also pretty hopeful that the screen will be fine for us, considering it'll most likely either have no PWM at all or the same PWM implementation as the G7 (no PWM above 42% brightness, 1174Hz). I'm fine with those numbers, no PWM above 42% brightness sounds just fine to me.

Will you be annoyed by the 326 PPI?
I personally won't, since it's essentially being traded for a much longer battery life. Unless the screen looks absolutely awful, I don't think it's that big of a deal. And from what I can see in the impressions videos from the event, it honestly looks pretty nice.

I don’t think I would, but I would have definitely liked a bigger phone. Something like XS Max but with LCD

I wish I could say the same...I’ve been using Plus sized phones since the 6 Plus came out...I tried my buddies 8 next to my 8 Plus and the text on his phone didn’t look as sharp as mine, it looked soft.

Seeing that the screen is larger than the 8 Plus, I don’t know why they couldn’t at least match the 8 Plus PPI.

That way it’s still below the XS/XS Max PPI, but it’s still prettt solid. I feel like matching the 8 PPI on the XR is the worst of all the cut corners with the XR.

I don’t care about the lack of 3D Touch, the lack of two camera lenses, the lack of better water proofing or the larger bezels...but the 326 PPI is a deal breaker for me :(

Well my iPad pro 10.5 is very sharp and only 264 PPI. So I would expect the 326 PPI on the XR to be sufficient for me.

Also the PPI on an Oled screen can't be compared to the same ppi of a LCD screen about sharpness due to the Diamond Pentile layout of the Oled

So what if I can't watch 1080p YouTube on the XR.
It's only a 6.1 inch screen.
The difference will be negligible

I wouldn't worry about the pixel pitch/density. To put this into perspective, the LG UltraFine 5K monitor is 218 PPI. On a screen that size of any iPhone or iPad, I guarantee no one can tell the difference between 326 PPI and 458 PPI, all other factors the same. Don't forget that the iPhone X* models technically have a 458 PPI, but the sub-pixels are different than the LCD models, so it's almost like cheating. :) In summary, this should be the least of our worries.

The thing is, I can tell the difference between the 8 Plus and 8. Those are both LCD screens and the PPI in the 8 Plus is noticeable better (to me at least).

The iPad is 264 PPI , looks crisp and held not much farther away during normal use than an iPhone XR would be . 326 PPI is fine. Apple’s new low end comes at a high price, unfortunate reality. The XR should be $600, XS $800 and XSMax, $1000. When Apple said the XS would be 999 you could hear a pin drop in the theater. Gone are the days when Apple says “we packed all this amazing technology into a device and the price is the same XXX”.

I guess you will have to check it out when it’s released. Everything is a balance and a “compared to what” scenario. I came from a Blackberry Dtek60 which is THE best OLED and sized phone I’ve used, loved that BB! The 8 is very good and much easier on eyes for reading which I do a lot of compared to the BB. I used to be all about spec sheet info... but I relaxed on that as 3 of the last high spec devices I have owned all developed battery or board issues and they all crapped out on me in some way at the worst possible times. If I knew for certain the XR had no PWM I’d be inclined to pre-order one, but I’m waiting for a deal with my carrier to upgrade and feedback from this forum on the display.

I have used my Moto z play for the last few days with no issues. It's an oled phone. Makes me even more bummed the max didn't work for me. For those who don't know, the z play uses a 5.5" super AMOLED (Samsung) screen at 1080p with 401ppi. It's almost identical in size to the 8+.

Yep. I've never had any issue with my Galaxy phones, oneplus or Moto z play. All of them oled.
That's really strange, I checked the stats for the Moto Z Play and the PWM implementation looks nearly the same compared to the X/XS.

If anything, I think that's a good sign. The fact that there *are* screens with PWM that don't hurt our eyes means that it's totally possible for Apple to do the same.

Maybe for him it was face id?
You never know.
Some people also complained about headaches with the Samsung iris scan

I'm coming from an 8 Plus and am going to preorder the XR. I originally ordered the XS Max and I found the OLED screen uncomfortable to look at and fatiguing so I returned it. Since then, I have returned to the Apple store almost every day and spent a lot of time with the XS Max. I tried the "increase contrast" accessibility feature and lowering the brightness by a tad. This definitely helped, but it's still fatiguing. Text is clearly way sharper on the XS Max, but the display seems to be a magnet for glare. Admittedly there is a lot of glare in the Apple store itself w/the recessed lighting. But I think I am done trying acclimate myself to the Max. As far as the XR goes, I think its's pretty clear that there really no such thing as a bad Apple LCD. They're all pretty stellar regardless of the PPI. Yes, the plus and max-sized phones provide a different and for some a much better user experience including myself vs the non-plus phones, but I doubt most people are going to find the XR screen inferior the 8 Plus because its 326 ppi. There are a ton of variables at play and all of this is a gestalt experience. It's certainly possible I won't like the XR, but I'm going to take a flier on it. I want to get beyond the 8 Plus which is for me a dated phone.

Agreed 100%.

I went to the apple store yesterday and compared the apple watch s4 to the phones (The S4 has 326-ish PPI) and it honestly looked fine. Not sure how it'll look on a 6.1" screen, but I'm sure it'll be great.

Still crossing my fingers that it doesn't have PWM though.

The 10.5 ipad pro is 264 PPI.
And this is sharp enough for me!!
So the 326 PPI on a 6.1 inch screen will be sharp enough

I compared the 7 with 326pi to the 7 Plus with 401pi. The 7 is noticeably fuzzier and inferior. No way would I switch to the Xr.

In specs 7 has a better contrast than plus model, but in reality the plus was better as you say, it has also better dpi as you mentioned.
As technology evolves, let's see first how the XR will perform with this "new" liquid retina. In a few days we will know...

All I know is that my eyes are thanking me since I dropped the phone off at USPS last Tuesday. Took about a day, but the pressure behind my eyes hasn't been back since... it had to be the XS Max.

Now I am just hoping the USPS / Newgistics return goes smoothly, as I have read horror stories online. Still waiting for Newgistics to pick up the phone from USPS.

You're being overly dramatic. The iPad is 264 PPI and still looks amazing to 99 percent of people. The iPad mini is 7.9 inches and 326 PPI and even that display looks nice and crisp. It'll look fine on a 6.1 inch screen.
