...sorry but... only two machine license? So could be better to buy on app store to have unlimited machines... I need it for three machines

Not a bad app... but I don't see a way to set the default sorting method... it seems to default to "none" and I have to set the sort field every time I change folders.

Thanks for your feedback. Currently, you set the sort policy on a per directory basis. Perhaps allowing you to set a default sorting method is an improvement we can make in an update!

One more question... how can I change the "current" folder to an external disk (NAS)... the only way I could find was to set one of the default folder paths to point to the NAS... but I need to switch between about 3 or 4 disks throughout the course of the day...

Also, would love to be able to run this on all 4 of my Macs... the App Store process gives you 5 machines... so I see that as a negative...

Otherwise, this is really good stuff... just need a few tweaks for it to fit into my workflow...

Can you get in touch with me here: https://apptyrant.com/contact/ and provide details of your set up and what you'd like to achieve. I can answer support questions in more detail via e-mail.

Thanks!

File Cabinet Pro version 4.1.2 has been released!

Here's what's new in 4.1.2:
-You can now have File Cabinet Pro automatically detect and display mounted volumes in the sidebar (this feature is off by default, but can be turned on in Settings). If you are using the Mac App Store version, you may have to grant permission to view mounted volumes directly in File Cabinet Pro in the system provided Open panel. This is due to App sandboxing rules on the Mac App Store. :D
-Added a "Sidebar" tab in the Preferences window.

I don't see a way to set the default sorting method

-Added "Default arrange files policy" setting in the Preferences window. When opening a directory for the first time, the option you set here will be used by default (@dwfaust Thanks a lot for your feedback!).
-Fixed potential crash for users still running Yosemite or El Capitan.

-Localized text in the Markdown document editor window in Korean.
-Minor bug fixes and improvements.

File Cabinet Pro version 4.2 update is out. This update adds a "Document Creator" Finder extension. If you enable this extension in System Preferences, you can create text documents in Finder just like you can in File Cabinet Pro.

Basically, you can give Finder some FCP juice. You can create text documents in Finder's context menu or from the toolbar item FCP provides (just like in FCP). Here's a quick demo video:

If you want to use this feature after upgrading to 4.2, you have to enable the Finder Extension in System Preferences first (you may find this tutorial helpful if you haven't done this before). If you have the Mac App Store version, you will have to save text documents through the system provided Save panel due to app sandboxing rules.

Hi AppTyrant,
I was unable to find a trial of File Cabinet but I did find a cracked one, so I tried that on a test mac. This is a good approach to file management. As a power user, I think it would be great to have this. But it has a lot of prominent and annoying usability issues. I'll just let you know of a few that I think should be high priority.
  • I have the list view set to default to alphabetical. When I create a file in the finder that is also a folder in the favorites, the file doesn’t show up in the list. Instead, it shows up at the bottom. Even quitting and restarting file cabinet leaves the new file at the bottom.
  • in the list view, clicking the headers does not sort by that header, although there is graphical click feedback. Also, the values for type, date, etc. are centered instead of left-justified like in the finder.
  • If I have file cabinet showing and then I click on another app, to get back to file cabinet I have to hit the hotkey TWICE, once to close the file cabinet (which I don't see because it's in background), and again to open it in the front. It should just bring itself to front if it’s already open and I hit the hotkey.
Also, you are creating .ATStore files in folders, apparently favorites. Those should be saved in the user library! It's bad enough that I have to run a utility to prevent/clean up the stupid .DS_Store files, but now you're creating another type. Bad, bad, bad.

I hope that feedback helps. It's just a few things I found after a few minutes of testing.

@alexis123 Thanks for your thoughtful feedback.

I wasn't able to reproduce this issue. FCP currently remembers sort order on a per directory basis. Do you have "Name" set as the arrange by files policy for the that directory? You can check if the Name menu item has a check next to it in the context menu (or in the menu from the pull down button in the toolbar, if you placed it in your customized toolbar).

Since you are using an unofficial cracked build though, I can't verify if any functionality has been broken by the cracker or not, since the binary has been tampered with, or if it's an old version. Please be safe. If anyone wants to try the app you can download File Cabinet Lite off the Mac App Store.

If you download File Cabinet Lite and still have this issue with list view, could you get in touch with me here: http://apptyrant.com/contact/ and describe the issue with steps to reproduce in a bit more detail?

If anyone else has any thoughts on this, I'd be interested to hear what others think. Currently it is a toggle (unless FCP is open in a different desktop). I can imagine a situation where someone has File Cabinet Pro open, but it's not the frontmost app, yet they still intend to close the window and may raise the same complaint but in reverse (that they have to hit the icon twice to close the window if the app isn't frontmost).

Thanks again for the feedback.

And version 4.4 is now out….

Here's what's new:

-Bug fixes and improvements.

Version 4.5 is out.

File Cabinet Pro 4.7 is out.

Here's what's new:
-You can now change the sort policy by clicking a column header in list view; clicking the same header multiple times in a row toggles between ascending and descending order.

-When changing the sort policy from File Cabinet Pro's context menu, you can now choose a sort policy in descending order by holding down the option key to expose an alternate list of menu items.

-You can now optionally show a "Date Last Opened" and a "Date Created" column in list view. If you wish to show these new columns, right click on the header in list view to unhide them using the context menu.

-If you have a sort policy set and the metadata of a file shown changes, File Cabinet Pro will now adjust the order of files to preserve the integrity of the current sort policy if necessary.
