Nope. I transfered 5.741 photos and videos but the ssd only has 5.715 so it just skipped a couple. Now how do I find the missing 26 to manually retransfer them?

Does that mean that I am missing even more files? When the short movie file of the photo is exported separately?

Over 5000 files, it becomes near impossible to determine the missing. If it were me, I would delete the bad copy set and start over from scratch but only copy in manageable bunches that can be readily checked and sorted out for missing files. On the Live photos, I just don't know enough about them to say.

Can you kindly tell what approximately the total size was and the transfer time For the 5.741?

FileBrowser for Business got an update today and it now supports multiple USB connections. I did a test with the following:

2018 12.9 iPad Pro
256GB SanDisk Extreme SD card from Canon camera
500GB Samsung T5 SSD (exFAT)
HooToo USB-C hub

I copied 654 Canon RAW images (14.5GB) from the SD card to the SSD. Transfer took 8min 30sec. All files copied and no corruption.

Did the same test but with the wireless RAVPower FileHub. Transfer time was 18min, no missing files or corruption.

For completeness sake, I test copying these same files from the SSD to the iPad and back to the SSD.

Using FileBrowser for Business and same iPad, files and SSD from above:

To iPad - 1min 30sec

To SSD - 3min 55sec

Same test but using Files app:

To SSD - 4min 30sec

Using the Files app, 24 of the files copied to the SSD were corrupted and unusable. Everything copied cleanly using FileBrowser for Business.

Have you tried this yet? I tried the FileBrowserGo, which appears to be a free version (same Developers) and the corruption was even worse.

Sorry, just noticed your reply.

Been days now since using FileBrowser For Biz, not a single problem.
Copying huge files from my sony camera is a breeze now. Happy with my purchase.
Recent update also finally let us connect to more than one external drive. Also can make connection to certain folders on the Files App.

If you’re not going to use advance network connections and some useful PDF related features, I suggest you to buy the regular FileBrowser for lower price.
FileBrowser Go has even more advance features with subscription based model.

Agree. The $6.99 version has all of the features most people want.

Would you mind expanding on this please?

I have my working projects stored in a folder using Files named "Media", I'd like to be able to view the contents of this folder using FileBrowserGo but I can't see a way to do it without moving the the "Media" folder to be within the FileBrowserGo folder that gets created. This unfortunately breaks my Lumafusion workflow as LF apparently cannot link to the FileBrowserGO folder....

Feel free to PM me.

Here’s the steps:
1. From FileBrowser Home, tap “+ Add Location”
2. Tap “USB/Files”
3. Tap “Select Location”
4. Tap “On My iPad”

From there you can select whichever folder you want to access and then tap “Save”.

This way you can access your Media folder from the FileBrowser without moving it into FileBrowser folder inside the Files app. Hence still linking the folder to LumaFusion.

Hello everyone,
I just create an account here because I have a serious problem with my samsung T5 500go and ipad pro 11" 2018 up to date, I think the problem is related to this discussion.

So, my SSD is in exFat and works perfectly on my windows pc. For my test, I just put one folder with 7 simple pdf files. I can open all these pdf file from my windows pc, everything is ok.

I connect the SSD to the ipad pro. I see it correctly in the File app, with my folder and all pdf.

BUT, 2 pdf don’t have the correct Pdf icon
If I open them, nothing is displayed. So I can’t read these 2 pdf
I try to move them from the SSD to the “My ipad” storage ---> I directly get the error message “No such file or directory” (???)
I try to rename them --> when I close and re-open the folder, the original name is kept
I try to delete them --> when I close and re-open the folder, pdf files re-appeared

This folder and files are just an example, in reality, this problem happen with many files in the SSD. It's totally unusable in this condition.

What do you think about that?

Bottom line is:
Files app messes with external storage formated exFAT.
Your best solution would be to use third party file management app such as “FileBrowser”.

But in general, non Apple formatted file system such as exFAT is not working very well under iOS / iPad OS.
So Apple formatted external drives also prevents a lot problems like this.

Thank you macdogpro
About the FileBrowser app, is there a full free version that I can completely use instead of "File" ? If no, which one is the cheaper ?

About the SSD format, is better to chose HFS+ or APFS ?

There’s no full free version of FileBrowser.
Among all FileBrowser versions; FileBrowser, FileBrowser Go and FileBrowser For Business, the regular FileBrowser is the cheapest one. Should be adequate for most file management needs.

APFS is the newer file system intended for SSD format.
Note that Apple file system can not be recognized on Windows.

Unfortunately I don't have a mac system to format my SSD in APFS

I hope apple will release an update for ipados in order to have a 100% exfat compatibility

Yeah, but I also think even without the problems on Files app, exFAT format is not recommended for current large capacity external storage, both SSD and HDD, on Mac system and Windows. It’s vulnerable to file errors compared to NTFS.
On my Mac, I installed NTFS file system software so that my Mac can write on NTFS formatted drives. But this feature is unlikely to be supported on iOS / iPad OS in the future.

I'm OK to use my SDD in APFS mode but I should found a way to format it with windows system or, at least, be sure than I can use read/write on it with windows.

I prefer NTFS and only use exFAT when I know I will need it for compatibility purposes.

Did another test today, using my new USB-C hub. Copied 165 Canon RAW images (1.9GB) from a camera SD card in the hub SD slot to a Samsung T5 500GB SSD attached to the hub via USB-C. Both card and drive are exFAT. I used Files to copy from the card to the drive and 11 of the 165 images showed as corrupt on the SSD after the copy. Did the same copy test but with FileBrowser for Business (which now supports multiple external device connections) and had no corruption. This test replicates the work flow I would use to backup camera files while on travel.

Repeated this test with new iPadOS 14 release - 4 files corrupted on copy by Files.
