I'm way more worried about the battery. And not so much out of the box, but rather the degradation of the battery over time - in a year the battery will only be charging to 85% of its original capacity and then I wont be able to get through a work day. I have this problem now with my current iPhone, it doesnt last nearly as long as it used to. Granted, I can put it into 2G mode except for when I really need to (for lots of surfing) and extend the life of the battery.

The other place this comes into cosideration is games. If you're playing an OpenGL ES game, how long will the battery last? I didn't see Apple post that anywhere...

Maybe Apple can squeeze more battery out of the firmware upgrades... we'll see.

I'll be buying a 3G because I skipped the first revision iPhone, but I think if I were an existing iPhone user my head would aspload deciding whether or not to upgrade. On the one hand, the improved sound quality would be a big plus, on the other it seems like you need to go 3G for that improvement and according to the reviews, that really kills the battery life. Such a short battery life on a device with no ability to carry a backup battery has me a bit worried, frankly.

Pogue did it for me...

  • No voice dialing? Oooooo...
  • Guess I *could* live without a memory card slot. Maybe...
  • If you can't navigate with the GPS on the iphone? Then what the heck is it for? Tracking users?
I'll wait it out or maybe buy someone's older iphone while they get the newness...

Anyone interested in selling me theirs?

Yeah. This I do not understand. You can have everything pushed and synced to the phone but...you can only have either business OR personal calendars or contacts on it? WTF is the point then?

I have a .Mac/MobileMe account where all my personal contacts are stored and synced with my phone now. But if I also want my business stuff to sync to the phone I can't have my personal stuff too? That is a big, big oversight. Seriously not happy with that. I guess I'll have to just deal with it just syncing my Exchange email and nothing else. That blows.
Totally agree with you IF that is the case. Can anyone confirm it? Seems like there's still some confusion.

The more I find out about this new phone and software, the less tempted I am to upgrade. Might just wait it out at this point. :(

Am I the only one whose excitement hasn't seen even the slightest dent in the face of these early reviews? I'm as excited as ever.

3G. GPS. 2.0 software with App Store and the other new features... well, what can I say. Friday, here I come! And I've had an iPhone since June 30th 2007 :)

I logged into MacRumors to see what the latest is and instead wind up at iPhoneRumors. Seriously, there 6 articles on the front page about iPhone!!! I long for the olden days when this forum was mostly about Mac Computers. I really wish Apple would spin the iPhone off into a separate company.

You might as well get used to it cos you wont hear anything mac until around September because Apple will want any/all press for the iPhone with no distractions.

You guys are misunderstanding the GPS comments, it's not accurate enough to know exactly where you are and for example say "Turn left in 300 feet", but it will still give you a line to follow and show you where you are on that line. Still seems pretty useful to me.

Sounds like you just described a glorified 'Locate Me'

most of the reviews just state the obvious, imo. nothing really groundbreaking here...

I agree with David. iPhone 2.0 is the real big deal. 3G is not so much.

Yea, I was thinking of switching over to AT&T in Oct, I might just keep using my iPod Touch. It does the job :)

Right now i'm using a verizon phone and the iPod Touch. So far it hasnt been a real pain in the ass. I was really thinking about totally switching over to have everything on one device, but from what i'm reading and hearing on the new phone, maybe i'll just stick to my combo.

You do know that the 2.0 software with App Store and the other new features will work just as well with the iPhone you currently own, right?

Don't buy a NEW iPhone for the 2.0 software or the App Store -- both of those will work just fine and dandy with the iPhone you already own!!

if the gps aint that good then why would Tom Tom work on it? It cant be too bad.
I'm excited to hear about audio clarity, wouldnt louder mean less battery life though?

Once I saw the added costs and the fact that I'd have to drive 4 hours to make use of 3G, that pretty shut down any desire I had to upgrade. Especially since I'll still get iPhone OS 2.0 for free. I also like the looks of the original better anyways. But thats me.

Someone with an iPhone please help me.

If there is no voice dialing, how is one supposed to use hands-free bluetooth in a car? Some handsfree units allow you to input a phone book, but many use the voice dialing mode of the phone itself. If hands free is required by law (Wash state and California for instance) how can you comply with the law if you have an iPhone?

In CA the law prohibits using a handset against the ear. So you can dial, receive, even TEXT!!!, and do your toenails, as is actually common on the 405, but one cannot take or make VOICE calls with the handset to your ear.

That said, in practice either a standard earphone dongle with microphone and switch, or a bluetooth earpiece, solves the issue.

The law was passed mainly to increase the police use of "visual probable cause", not to increase highway safety. [We have random checkpoints on several highways and streets regularly now, as well as sniffing dogs on "public" transportation. ICC "guaranteed" anyone could enter a "public transportation unit" without identification. TSA reversed that 150 year precedent. "Show me your papers" - Nazi Germany, and 2008 USA]

Everyone is a perp now, not just the ones so obviously out of compliance they bring attention to themselves, as the constitution implies. The constitution is dead.

Apple? Can you save us? Or will you simply globalize the remainder of the world around our police state? Steve? Reminder: they even went after Steve for a while and he is legally meek.

Even tho I'm a big Apple fanboi I think I will wait a bit. That 3G seemed like a big deal at first but now doesn seem like a good move to cancel my contract and go all over again.
I might skip this one... or... not... hmmm... i want one just cause it's new... hmm... :D

You do know that not everyone has an exchange server for work, right? There is a point.

I am starting to get the feeling (or rather confirm the feeling) that most of the cool features will be in the 2.0 as opposed to the 3G phone. So, looks like I will be sticking with my original iPhone unless people in NYC insist that the 3G phone is worth it...

That's exactly what it is. Locate me, but accurate and keeps updating as you drive along (hence tracking). When you have a driving rout set the dot will mark where your car is along the route, but it's not accurate enough to know exactly how far you are from a turn.

Potentially, if you live in a Street View mapped city - GPS on, route added, Street view mode enabled, and you're off. Would be the visual equivalent of the pseudo car view that Sat Navs do, but with actual pictures of the streets you go down...

Which leaves 3G and GPS as the big draws...

Sadly they both seem to have big caveats:

3G kills your battery life to the point where the early reviewers sometimes didn't even get a day's worth of usage of the phone (and that's before natural battery degredation).

GPS can't be used for exactly what everyone expects to use GPS for. I'm hoping this one is just a software issue and there will be AppStore apps that do provide usable driving direction type applications, but given the contents of these reviews and the fact that Apple has done a fairly horrible job of clearly communicating any information regarding the iPhone 3G -- launch details, plans for the future, plans for the development program (there are still tons of people who have signed up and never been approved, including big name Mac supporters), etc, I'm not sure what to think.

But how would that work? You would have 2 separate types of contacts on the phone? If you create a new contact or calendar event on the phone, how would it know which account to sync it to?

You win the Captain Obvious Award of the day! Of course I know. What most, if not all of you seem to be forgetting is what impact CoreLocation and 3G speeds will have on 3rd party apps coming to the AppStore. That's where the real excitement begins. The GPS integration with GMaps on iPhone is just the beginning.. and a humble beginning at that.

Mark my words.. where 3G and GPS will truly become exciting is when we begin to see how those crafty devs out there will leverage the new hardware in the iPhone 3G. This, of course, is something none of the early reviews could possibly tell you about because despite having had access to iPhone 3G for the past two weeks, they, like the rest of us, had NO ACCESS to the App Store. Even if they had had access to the AppStore, the damn thing is just launching this Friday! Devs need to get a feel for the new iPhone. Give it some time.

I repeat: mark my words. 3rd party apps using the new hardware is why you want an iPhone 3G, not merely on account of the presence of the new hardware.

All of the above is obviously nothing more than my humble opinion. At the same time, it is the reason why I am excited as ever, and certainly no less so than I was yesterday, and no less than I was on June 9th.

um, does the satelite navigation also work with iPod touch? Be because Steve never said that it did in the key note.

And I'm kind of annoyed there in no turn by turn navigation

Awesome, those reviews sound pretty solid. Especially glad to hear that they've confirmed the improved call quality.

Battery life was announced a long time ago, I don't know why people on this board are complaining like it's some new piece of info. This battery life is solid and should be plenty for the large majority of users. It was described as "comparable to or better than" other smartphones, and I imagine the number of other smartphone users who need to carry extra batteries is probably very small.

If the GPS has issues preventing its use as a car navigation tool, that's definitely too bad; however, putting your iPhone on a dashboard in the baking sun would be a dicey proposition even if it did. Even if the next iteration has a GPS chip as robust as a dedicated unit's, I'm still not sure that I'd want my iPhone cooking in direct sunlight.

Sorry, but that's not the point at all. So you're telling me if that I have exchange at work I'm automatically assumed and allowed to be using my work account for all my personal needs? I'm further not allowed to use MobileMe for personal use because I already have Exchange configured?

Doesn't make sense at all. We should have the ability to sync multiple contact sources and calendars.

I just want three things....MMS, copy/paste with text and landscape keyboard in e-mail/text messaging/notes. Other than that...I am happy with mine.
