But how would that work? You would have 2 separate types of contacts on the phone? If you create a new contact or calendar event on the phone, how would it know which account to sync it to?

Yes, absolutely. One or two contact lists (preference set). Same for calendaring or just different colors for difference accounts.

Maybe I'm over simplifying things, but this seems really simple and greatly overlooked.

Mobile me is Push for the Rest of US. Not Exchange users.

You do know that not everyone has an exchange server for work, right? There is a point.

OK, so what's the point? (Or are you being sarcastic? I can't tell.) I have personal calendars on iCal on my Mac at home (same for contacts in my address book) and work appointments on Exchange. I can't have both on my phone? I can have more than one email account sync to the phone, but not calendars/contacts from more than one source?

um, does the satelite navigation also work with iPod touch? Be because Steve never said that it did in the key note.

And I'm kind of annoyed there in no turn by turn navigation

Steve said iPhone 2.0 software will work on the Touch, he never said anything about satellite navigation

Also for those thinking 3rd party devs like Tom Tom will write turn by turn software for the iPhone, don't get your hopes up. Apparently there's a line in the SDK Agreement that forbids development of turn by turn navigation software

if the gps aint that good then why would Tom Tom work on it? It cant be too bad.
I'm excited to hear about audio clarity, wouldnt louder mean less battery life though?

It's highly likely that Tom Tom had nothing but a simulator to build their app with. We'll see what Tom Tom says next week when they can try their app out on a real iPhone 3G.

? The iPod Touch has no cell radio inside. You can use Locate Me in Google Maps when connected to WiFi, just as before, and that's it. No satellites involved. Or cell towers, for that matter.

The iPod Touch does not have a GPS-chipset; there's no way for it to do satellite navigation. That said, the "Locate Me" function on the integrated Google Maps should work fine in approximating your location.

My principle interest in the 3G iPhone is neither faster internet speed nor GPS but rather improved cellular reception. I'm therefore more likely to purchase one as Mossbergs review indicates that the 3G does improve voice coverage. I can't overstate how important this feature is.

I'm with you. The other features are marginal for me. But i have residences in ky and fla, and at the latter i can't use the phone inside my townhouse. ATT knows of the tower signal deficiency but after 8 months of my reporting it and their acknowledging it, they haven't fixed it (it's in the middle of a suburban area, a mile or two from one of their "more bars in more places" billboards). So the chance of having it work there makes me eagerly anticipate getting one. In the end though i think the apps are going to be the big story about the iPhone, in the same way that the first spread sheet launched a boom in computer usage.

I'm quite excited too. All I wanted really was GPS and 3G. We're also getting 2.0 and the App Store. It's a totally worthwhile upgrade for me. For anyone who's complaining... so don't buy it. Honestly...

Am I the only one whose excitement hasn't seen even the slightest dent in the face of these early reviews? I'm as excited as ever.

3G. GPS. 2.0 software with App Store and the other new features... well, what can I say. Friday, here I come! And I've had an iPhone since June 30th 2007 :)

glad to hear they improved the speaker. this is a big deal.

hopefully GPS is better than what they're saying

Better than what WHO is saying?

One review says it works very accurately.

Really, this whole "the antenna is too small" thing from David Pogue's review doesn't make much sense. Even Engadget agrees. I doubt the guy even tried it.

it all sounds amazing but I'm going to wait atleast 6 months until get the new one. I just want to make sure something else better or improved doesnt creep up on me.

Yea, I was thinking of switching over to AT&T in Oct, I might just keep using my iPod Touch. It does the job :)

Right now i'm using a verizon phone and the iPod Touch. So far it hasnt been a real pain in the ass. I was really thinking about totally switching over to have everything on one device, but from what i'm reading and hearing on the new phone, maybe i'll just stick to my combo.

I was thinking the same. I'm on AT&T and out of contract so I qualify for the discount but still have a problem justifying the $30.00 monthly fee -- $360 per year not including taxes + the $299 for the 16GB = >$660 for the first year.

The 32G Touch at a one time $500 gets you wifi internet, mail, and twice the storage. This is probably the best deal until the iphone matures. And wifi is everywhere.

what like a massive price drop?

Something that I've just assumed, but how in the he!! does this thing not have voice activated dialing? My three year old RAZR does this with excellent accuracy.

Pathetic.

I logged into MacRumors to see what the latest is and instead wind up at iPhoneRumors. Seriously, there 6 articles on the front page about iPhone!!! I long for the olden days when this forum was mostly about Mac Computers. I really wish Apple would spin the iPhone off into a separate company.

What do you expect? The new iPhone's being released worldwide on Friday. It's the big Apple news right now.

What the hell? Obviously you'll hear a ton about the iPhone because we're two days, eight hours and 18 minutes away from the launch of the company's latest mobile phone. What do you expect? After the dust settles, you can get excited about new computer rumors floating about again.

Uhh guys? TomTom already proved this wrong. They have turn by turn on the iphone already.

people that are sick of hearing about the iPhone aren't doing themselves any favors by reading iPhone threads. If you don't want to hear about it then read the sections on other products.

Whatever you do, do it well.

I guess I never expected turn by turn instructions. That would require 1. consistent placement of the iPhone while in a car (so it can maintain signal) 2. a large enough antenna to allow continuous accurate tracking 3. battery sufficient to maintain continuous tracking and 4. enough memory to store all the necessary maps or else relying on 3G to power continuous map updates, which would take a bit of battery.

My guess is that a turn by turn implementation would be inaccurate and drain battery life. So you'd get people who drive for two hours and completely drain their battery, then complain about that. Also, you'd get people turning onto the wrong streets, especially when they're close together. Finally, the map might disappear temporarily because the 3G would temporarily be in a slow spot. Of course, someone who is actually using turn-by-turn on a cell phone might want to give some insight into whether these ideas hold water.

Uhh you can plug your phone in during a trip in your car dude.
