In the second paragraph he points out that it can track your position. That is all that is needed as far as the antenna is concerned for turn by turn directions. Apple's site says it includes turn by turn. The other reviews said the GPS was accurate. Pogue really dropped the ball. If the problem is the sky scrapers in Manhattan, fine. But most of us aren't there.

He says in the first paragraph it works in a car. Duh.

I guess I never expected turn by turn instructions. That would require 1. consistent placement of the iPhone while in a car (so it can maintain signal) 2. a large enough antenna to allow continuous accurate tracking 3. battery sufficient to maintain continuous tracking and 4. enough memory to store all the necessary maps or else relying on 3G to power continuous map updates, which would take a bit of battery.

My guess is that a turn by turn implementation would be inaccurate and drain battery life. So you'd get people who drive for two hours and completely drain their battery, then complain about that. Also, you'd get people turning onto the wrong streets, especially when they're close together. Finally, the map might disappear temporarily because the 3G would temporarily be in a slow spot. Of course, someone who is actually using turn-by-turn on a cell phone might want to give some insight into whether these ideas hold water.

As bbplayer mentioned "Uhh you can plug your phone in during a trip in your car dude."

Furthermore, that would solve another problem - it would charge while plugged in reducing battery issues.

Let's be honest, this is complete BS about the GPS thing...I have a Nokia N78 (candybar style phone) that can do real-time voice guided navigation via GPS flawlessly - this includes traffic avoidance, rerouting, searching for POIs online, etc. I can even download all of US, Canada, Europe, South America, wherever for free and preload on it so it doesn't need to download maps, etc. This is NOT new advanced technology, other phone companies have been offering this for a LONG time.

I'm shocked people are honestly trying to make excuses for Apple on this...they simply dropped the ball. They had a chance to create a true all in one device that could do GPS and they decided not to. Glad I went with Nokia :D

Also this idea that it has to modulate the GPS chip on/off for battery is nuts...I used my Nokia for a 2 hour trip this past weekend with GPS navigation and on 3G the whole time...didn't lose a single bar on the battery meter. Apple is just good at making excuses.

  • No voice dialing? Oooooo...
  • Guess I *could* live without a memory card slot. Maybe...
  • If you can't navigate with the GPS on the iphone? Then what the heck is it for? Tracking users?
I'll wait it out or maybe buy someone's older iphone while they get the newness...

Anyone interested in selling me theirs?
I'm so tired of hearing the memory slot argument most devices with sd slots offer 1/2 or 1/4 the storage anyways (usually sold separately). What do you really expect people carrying a hand full of sd cards like albums? 8gb or 16gb internal is good imo.

3G iPhone

When I bought the iPhone I agreed to a new 2 year contract with AT&T. For me, the new 3G iPhone doesn't make since to buy with the new contract that AT&T wants from me. It doesn't offer anything more besides 3G which I am unsure how well that coverage and reception will be at launch and throughout the course of my 2 year contract. Maybe next year, after a few more software updates the next iPhone will be worth a new contract with AT&T. But the phone is a good one and so will be the 3G. The cell companies are just crooks and I don't like the idea of Apple being in business with them.

I'm glad I'm not elligible for an upgrade.

Mossberg's right and I'm glad I'm waiting till there's more functionality like a front facing camera for iChat, a higher rez camera on the back with flash, and honest to goodness text to speech GPS.

I wish Apple would just own up to why they're not including these features. Is it because a super iPhone with 32gb is just around the holiday corner? I sure hope so. Maybe then it would be worth AT&T's $30 extra on my phone bill plus $5 for 200 text mssgs.

One can only dream.

i'm going to take a wait and see approach about a lack of turn by turn GPS, however....if this is true, why bother having it on the phone? Why not just use the cell towers and go from there? total waste if thats the case...

again, IF this is true, it makes an already lame update even worse....throw on the "twice as fast, half the price" B.S., and you've got a real S hit Sandwich.

I am curious to see how this sells....I think it might sell early, but i just don't know if it will sell a ton here in the states (i'm sure i'll be wrong)....I see more people complaining about it (like me), then i do people praising it. you're paying more then you did for iphone 1 (AT&T contract), for features that should have already been in the original iphone (gps, 3g), and not getting features that are already in the most basic phones (video recording, MMS, etc)....

I'll wait...i'll wait for another year before i pick up this junk....

and another thing, the app store: totally overrated....can i please play "bible hangman"? or download an app that let's me know, "when it's the right time to call someone?".....lame.

ps- please don't respond "good, that makes it easier for me to get one"

It's gonna be the upgrade 4 weeks from now. We're not lowering the price this time. But we're adding turn-by-turn directions! Isn't that cool? Boom, only $50 for existing users!

LOL! I see someone is familiar with the Sidekick app store :)

Is it because a super iPhone with 32gb is just around the holiday corner?
As for why 16GB is the largest-capacity iPhone: my guess is that Apple doesn't want to cannibalize sales of iPods. I'm hoping that we'll see a 32GB iPhone once Apple releases a 64GB (or so) iTouch. The holiday season is a good possibility, but only time will tell.

It really is annoying. Even when the first iPhone came out and devices cost 2x as much or more came with 32 or 64MB and the iPhone came with 4 or 8GB peopel were complaining that it didn't have an SD slot, more Flash or an HDD.

Great! One less guy I need to worry about clogging up the line in front of the store.

As for the "serious" part of my response, I'll just point you to this: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/5739879/

Paying more for features that should have been in the first iPhone? Well, that's a great observation and all, but what's your point exactly? iPhone 3G is here now, and it has those features. It replaces the old iPhone. That's fair critique, but really has no bearing on the quality or "worth" of the new iPhone whatsoever.

You see more people complaining where? In this thread? Well, for one, it's human nature to love to complain. About everything. Secondly, if you're wondering about how well iPhone 3G will sell, you can't rely on what you see in this thread for that purpose. You need to think of the mainstream iPhone consumer/customer. Then ask yourself, will the masses want this thing? I'd say it's a pretty clear yes when you look at it that way.

Thing is.. the lacking features, with a few exceptions, are very much a matter of perspective. Personally, I couldn't care less about the lack of voice dialling (I don't even have a car..), MMS (I think I've met one person in my life who has ever sent an MMS, and it was that same person that I ever received one or more MMSes from, so uh, this is insignificant to the point of being laughable [to me anyway]). Copy/paste is one of those "exceptions", and I'm sure Apple is working on it. And yes, it's taking them for freaking ever, but it's not like our complaining will make it go faster. Video recording is a neat feature to have.. but if you buy a phone because recording videos with it is so important to you, you're doing something wrong. It would be a neat thing to have, but by no means does it make or break the device for me (and by extension, the majority of consumers out there, I'm willing to conjecture).

And, IMHO, you couldn't be more wrong about the App Store. I share The iPhone Blog's opinion (independently, I might add, and not just because they said so--I'm genuinely convinced of this) that the AppStore is the "motherload". It's going to make all the difference. As you'll see in the post I linked to above, I also believe that 3rd party apps are the single biggest advantage iPhone 3G has over the old iPhone. 3rd party apps are going to make use of both the faster data access as well as GPS to make for an amazing experience on iPhone no other phone of the past has ever come close to.

And with that I'll end this post. Obviously, all of the above is my own opinion. Feel free to counter-argue. Note that my intention is not to "bash you" for what you think or anything. I'm just trying to give some perspective via my own opinions.

I haven't watched the video, but according to Engadget, Walt states you can only sync either Exchange or personal accounts and not both at the same time. That absolutely stinks! You mean I can't have the push features for both my work email (Exchange) and personal accounts (was planning on purchasing MobileMe)?! Why not?

Update on this from a sidebar in USA Today's review (that I didn't read the first time through but saw this pointed out on gizmodo) -- "to use Exchange and keep a separate personal calendar or contact list on the iPhone, you will need to use Apple's new $100-a-year MobileMe service."

That works for me! (Sucks for those that don't have MobileMe though.)

I'm a Mac fan like everyone else here, but I've gotta say:

Apple is doing the same thing everyone else is doing out there to make money--gearing their stuff towards the teens/kids. I mean, face facts:
1. Movies that are released now are pretty much ALL PG-13. Why? Because there are more teenagers that can pay to get in to a PG-13 than an R-rated movie. This is Apple's plan. Make the iPhone less expensive this time around (which is arguable, since it really ISN'T for us already with a previous iPhone) so that the teen crowd can buy them.
2. Have you seen where most of the interest seems to be with these PHONES? Yeah, that's right...GAMING. Are you serious? Hey, I want to buy an iPHONE so I can play a GAME on it. I'm all for the fact that the OS on the thing is friggin' sweet enough to be ABLE to put games on it, but is that really where we need to focus our mindshare? Only if we sell them to TEENS.

I am disgusted with the new 3G iPhone. Are you telling me that in a YEAR cycle, where Apple has had a chance to listen to all their feedback and fire back with an even MORE amazing product than before, they give us basically a slap in the face, and much like a drug pusher, keep you buzzed just enough with the THOUGHT of some new feature that you'll stay around.

My applause to all the developers out there that have contributed to the jailbreak and 3rd party apps that we have now. These people pushed the iPhone to the limits with not even so much as a SDK. But fear not, the AppStore will provide us with Super Monkey Ballz, and more kart racing games than you can possibly imagine.

I'd rather see Apple come out with a kick ass portable game system to keep things distinctly different. That way we could get the focus back on telephony and all the bells and whistles that are supposed to go with it.

Thanks for taking the time to read my rant.

Have fun out there!

- as far as i know the N78 uses AGPS like the iPhone so it ain't the real GPS either.

- most, if not all, phones turn off 3G data streaming when not in use. the little 3G network indicators that you can see on Sprint/Verizon/ATT just indicates the phone has detected it's home network, it doesn't mean it's on it. wayyyy too battery intensive to have it on full time. every phone i've owned (palm 700p, 750, HTC Mogul and Touch) always had to ask for permission first before it actually starts using 3G for data transfer. so i'm not sure why the reviewers said they were making phone calls on a 3G network seeing as HSPA/HSDPA (like EVDO) is a data only network and does diddly squat for voice...except for wasting batteries.

- video phone chat...seriously? if some of you are b*tchin about the battery life now...

- a cam with auto focus and flash, pshh! if i'm shootin' it's going to be with my D50 paired with a 17-55 2.8 or a point-and-shoot Sanyo HD1000. please, i'll put any phone to shame with either camera in regards to megapixels, clarity or sharpness. yeah i know it's not really fair to use real cameras to compare but if you're needing 3 megapixels in a phone camera maybe start lookin' at a Canon or Nikon. much better investment.

- all other gripes are fair though: copy paste, SD card, i don't really care about the stero bluetooth thingy but what the hell...better to have it and not need it :p and STILL no MMS! wtf, no more sexy pics from the gf whilst i'm at work :D

the N78 has a real GPS. you can turn AGPS on if you want but you do not need a connection to the cellular network to locate (can go off satellites only).

Make no mistake about it: these are luke warm reviews.

I suspect the battery issue is a pretty serious one. Yes, it was soft peddled, but these reviewers need to keep Apple happy to keep their access.

Yet, I suspect that no matter what I am buying the new iPhone on Friday (if I can get one.)

But I also suspect I will disappointed. I just hope the battery issue doesn't make the iPhone unusable. It's gotta last a day with use, at least a couple of days idle.

The smart move for current iPhone owners is just to get the free update. I'm not that smart.

I hope people are checking the 3G coverage area maps because I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed people when they get hit with paying for a 3G data plan and 3G is not in their area. In fact, the 3G coverage area is woefully sparse.

Poor phrasing on my part. I knew that would come back to bite me but didn't edit it anyway.. I suppose I should have.

I know that, of course. What I meant was that the iPhone 3G has an advantage over the original iPhone with 3G and GPS in regards to 3rd party apps, and not solely by virtue of having the new hardware. Put another way: it's not the 3G and GPS hardware of the iPhone 3G itself that makes the big difference; it's how 3rd party apps will use that new hardware to their advantage.

3rd party apps for iPhone 3G will be more exciting than for iPhone 2G, basically, because of what the iPhone 3G offers over the iPhone 2G.

I hope I got the point across.

you are right. did a more detailed search...i stand corrected.

the N78 has a real GPS. you can turn AGPS on if you want but you do not need a connection to the cellular network to locate (can go off satellites only).
