I call bs to it is a small number. I just got my replacement phone. And guess what the crackling is worse on is this one. I'm not trying to be rude towards you. I just don't believe any more it is a small number.
I’m shocked they admitted it...& so quickly. Probably helped that even an editor at The Verge has the issue.

I am very sorry for those of you who have experienced these problems. I typically buy iPhones very early in the cycle, often the first day. It’s worked out fine in the past

This time, intuition told me to wait. So I’ll monitor this thread until it’s clear that whatever the issue is, it is resolved.

BTW, I have no interest in an iPhone X - I’ll wait for the “S” version in a year or so.

Is anyone else experiencing a crackling static noise from the earpiece during facetime or cellular calls? Strange thing is this noise happens randomly, roughly 1 in 3 calls. This is happening on iphone 8 plus.

Yes, my iPhone 8 does it, contacted apple and seems like they are aware of the bug. Updated to iOS11.0.1 but still the same. If no improvement genius bar appointment but for now I will wait to let them try to sort it out.

I don’t know why my product replacement is still pending. AppleCare says I should get it soon. They’re not too helpful. I submitted an Apple express replacement for my 8 plus on Saturday. I guess it doesn’t matter as the replacement probably has the crackling.

just install developers beta 11.1 made 4 calls .I can confirm no more cracking noise .its being fixed in 11.1

Wow! Great! Interesting, I've made multiple calls today and note no further crackling when I've had crackling every day since purchase. Odd... only thing different was I was using speaker phone for about 20 minute while on hold earlier this morning and since then, no further earpiece crackling. Will hope 11.1 provides a permanent fix!

Apple *always* says it "affects a small number", if you go back and read their responses from all the past problems. It's a boilerplate response to every issue, via their Marketing Dept. They don't want to alarm everyone. If they were honest and said "We've identified a problem affecting all of our iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models", how would you think sales would look moving forward? Everyone would wait.

Probably not before iPhone X launch. It's possible they will include the crackling fix in a .0.2 release before then.

That's my guess as well. This is too widespread of an issue and getting too much attention in the press to wait until 11.1. If it's fixed in 11.1 (and so far reports have been positive), they'll most likely bring that fix down to 11.0.2 and release it in the next couple of weeks.

The fact that a hard reset fixes it temporarily would make a strong suggestion that something during usage corrupts something in memory causing the crackle. They need to find what's causing it and fix it.

IMO.. I agree with the canned “small number” response. Also, I think Apple admitting awareness and acknowledgment of issue so quickly points to them being close to a solution. ... unlike Repair Depots replacing bad keyboards with bad keyboards.. crickets there...sorry.. couldn’t resist mini-rant.
