Does the voice sound muffled to you, in a quiet room, with volume set to around level 6? It could just be the quality of this number though. The quality of my FaceTime audio call was acceptable to me, just slightly muffled, no static noise so far

EDIT- called that number again, the muffling is gone! I guess that is intermittent too...

EDIT 2- yep, intermittent indeed...called 1-866-210-2157 two more times, the first was crystal clear, second was muffled from the beginning
Worried when you say muffling. Wondering if just masking hardware issue.

This is not a new issue in cell phones. I had the same issue on the 4s and 6 when they came out (google it and you will see I wasn't the only one). It can happen on any cell phone, because of tolerances on the literally hundreds of small parts that they are made with. It's basically noises that any cell phone makes, just getting amplified through the earpiece (where normally they are not loud enough to hear). Bad news is that it may not get fixed with software. Mine never did anyways. I eventually had to exchange the phone each time and luckily, the problem went away. Good luck!

Good news in this case is that Beta 11.1 seems to solve it and given how very widespread it is, it would seem to be software in this particular case.

That's good news. It's possible that software could have fixed it in my case, also. But, maybe the difference here is that Apple has acknowledged it and trying to address it. In my cases, Apple did not acknowledge it, at least not that I ever saw. And, good news is that since they are trying to remedy this, I don't see how they could deny a warranty replacement if software does fail to fix it.

Is anyone else using iOS 11.1 beta able to verify this? 2 reports of muffling but no clicking. Muffling could well be a cellular service issue and is not altogether uncommon.

Best way I found to test for the static crackle was repeated calls to voicemail. So far it has not failed to emerge after a few calls. I’m NOT running the 11.1 Beta as I’m not a developer.

Hopefully Apple will explain the problem when they fix it.

My concern is that this is a hardware problem [speculation] and whilst the software fix can cancel the clicking, it would lead to audio artefacts such as muffling.

I’ll be returning my 8, which I love, to Vodafone today whilst still in the return window and watching this space with interest!

Is anyone else experiencing a crackling static noise from the earpiece during facetime or cellular calls? Strange thing is this noise happens randomly, roughly 1 in 3 calls. This is happening on iphone 8 plus.

Crystal Clear voice on my 8 plus, either via earpiece or AirPods.

I share your concerns. If there is no software fix that I can test within the next week mine is probably going back too. I have an SE which I love and that’ll do me until things settle down.

I’m glad though that 11.1 seems to resolve the crackle at least. Whether it does this by adding muffles is open for debate so far.

8 Plus 64GB Gold with intermittent crackling from the earpiece during calls here as well. Wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me (only made three calls so far since last friday, not including the test calls to my voicemail) but really hoping for a fix as well. I also have a very very slight clicking sound sometimes when I touch the area around the earpiece (probably wouldn't even have noticed that had I not read about someone with a similar issue here), so I'm not entirely sure it's a software issue. Maybe a hardware issue they're going to mask with a fix. We'll see. If slight clicking and crackling is the worst that could happen, I'm not returning the phone. That would mean returning to my Huawei Mate 9 and I'm not ready for that. :D

Just recieved from China brand new iPhone 8 256 gb Space Gray Sim Free model. Same thing here.
Crackling on some calls, other calls are perfect. All calls are crystal clear. The crackling is very annoying.
I have 14 day window to return, if this is not fixed I am returning.

I honestly think if it is resolved in 11.1 that they could isolate the fix in 11.0.2. I would hope this week. They really need to put it to rest.

Just to add: this is UK bought phone, if that makes a difference. However, due to the fact that it happens during facetime calls as well, it is probably not a cellular modem problem.

Maybe during video the phone get hotter and the glue on the back glass is cracking ?

How is this a software issue? What if this is a harware issue?

If it’s software it’s potentially an easy fix in terms of deployment. If it’s hardware, it could still be a software fix but may mean toning down the earpiece for example. Which wouldn’t be the best outcome I suspect.

This reminds me of the hissing noise from iphon 7 plus when recording videos.
