Disculpa, pero puedo entender que te funciono esa XFX?

Mi entendimiento es que esas tarjetas no funcionan bien para esta modificacion.

For english speaker:

"sorry, but if I understand that correctly, were you able to use a XFX card?
My understanding is that those cards dont accept this mod"

Hola, has entendido bien. Tengo mi gráfica XFX 280X funcionando perfectamente en mi Mac Pro 5.1. Además funciona mejor que la 290 que tuve también en mi Mac Pro. Saludos.

English:
Hi, you understand well. I have my gpu XFX 280X working perfectly in my Mac Pro 5.1. This gpu works better the 290 had in my Mac Pro. Regards.

I have the MSI 3G Gaming Version that the OP uses, flashed it using the provided ROM and instructions in this thread, and it has worked great in my 2009 Mac Pro.

Recently however, I have been experiencing heavily corrupted display upon booting. The problem is inconsistent, and I've tried restarting, SMC and PRAM reset, all multiple times, and cannot seem to pin down a pattern.

I'm using one of the older aluminum apple cinema displays (http://www.everymac.com/monitors/apple/studio_cinema/specs/apple_cinema_display_23.html) connected to a monoprice MDP adapter (http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=12744&seq=1&format=2), and as long as I unplug and replug the MDP cable the problem is fixed.

I tried going directly into the DVI port on the GPU as well, without the adapter, and found the same problem - again inconsistently - so I don't think it's the adapter.

Image of the corrupted graphics is attached. Any ideas? It might have started with the upgrade to Yosemite, but I really can't recall since it is

Thanks in advance!

@stmp, did you perform the resistor removal for PCI 2 speed?

Is there a specific reason you're using that adapter? The card is fully capable of driving the DVI signal your display lusts for.

@rawweb, thanks for your reply-

No removal of the resistor for PCIE 2 speed, only using the adapter for when I want to connect the Display to a Macbook Pro. I tested with and without the adapter and the issue persists, albeit inconsistently.

Any chance you have access to a non Mac desktop to test the card in? Just curious if it's related to something with OS X.

Also, did you save the original rom? You could always revert to that if you suspect something with the flash is botched.

Hi guys, after reading a lot in this forum and netkas i finally decided to buy the MSI R9 280x for my mac pro 1.1.
I´m in yosemite 10.10.5, today the card arrived. Plugged all, power up and it works. "but" .
I run benchmarks from my previous hd5770 and i compared with the x280 and the only improvement has been unigine from 654 to 1300. But in luxmark i have a score of 11 points... Cinebench , same as the 5770, bruce x was 10 seconds less that the previous car,. and in oceanwave i have the same score as the 5770, 60fps.

i think something is wrong, any one can give me a little of advise on this.

I have removed appleintelcpupower and applintelcpupowerclient as i have read in nets. but no luck.
The card is stock

Help please!!!

So, unigine confirms that OpenGL works on your 280X.

BruceX confirms that OpenCL works.

Luxmark obviously is not working, but not just poor performance. Did you face the same problem regardless if you are running V2 or V3? V3 seems not working well at this moment. Also, did you try different scene?

Cinebench is bottlenecked by your CPU's single core performance. There is nothing you can do about it. It never a good benchmark for GPU.

Vsync cap your FPS at 60 in oceanwave. it's not your card's problem.

If you want more GPU benchmark, try GFXBench, they offer both OpenCL and OpenGL benchmarking software.

!!! Nice sir!

Thank you very much for the quick reply!

Now i can understand some things. Right now i´m editing some RED 4k RAW footage, and its working great, rendering times are much much quicker.

I tried Lexmark v2 and it worked great, now it´s showing the same results as everybody.

I have just done the flashing, really easy to do if you have a windows machine, 3 clicks and you are done!

About the r17 thing, i benchmarked before and after and didn´t see any improvement but i have it done as you all!

Thanks all for the support, great forum!

On a Mac Pro 1,1, remove R17 shouldn't make any difference, but it's good to get it down, which may be useful in the future.

Hullo!

I recently acquired a sapphire R9 280x with 2 8pin power cables.

I know that the card requires more power than what my mac can provide. I know trying to power it from the eSatas alone is a risk. BUT... has anybody tried to power a 2 8pin GPU using the eSata alone?

I've heard of multiple solutions using some funky Y cables and/or bringing the cd drive molex into play - for right now, I am just trying to make a determination if anybody has attempted/succeeded powering the card using the two onboard mini 6pin eSata port only.

The reason I ask, is that I am looking to flash the bios AND under clock the card to keep the card from sucking down more than what the power supply can provide. It would be great to know if anybody's attempted to do this as well.

Also - I got my hands on an MSI R7950 Twin Frozr OC edition. I tried flashing using Netkas' and Rominator's process/rom but it causes my mac (2,1 Tiamo Mavericks) to crash (black screen). It's only on this thread where I saw someone succeed - I am hoping to be able to duplicate the feat. I need the boot screen as I have to switch between OS' that are not necessarily in my drive bay and startup disk may not be able to immediately find.

I've tried posting on another forum but unfortunately have not received a response.

Actually there is progress in LuxMark 3.1, the Neumann mic medium scene is working well now. This is on 10.11.2 beta (note the OpenCL version date) with a Gigabyte 280X

BTW don't try this with a Maxwell card.. ;)

Thank you everyone this thread is going to be so helpful to me this week.

Somehow (idiocy) I won 3 auctions for 3 Sapphire cards 7970, 7950, and 7870 (wasn't paying attention). I'm currently using a 6870 in a 4.1 and I have the GT120 in a 2.1.

If I've read this thread correctly, there have been roms posted for 280x that should work with the 7970/7950 right? or are they all different?

I'll post my info if necessary, but that was the part I needed to clear up, because I've installed Windows 10 in bootcamp, I have ATIWinflash and GPU-Z and if it's just a matter of downloading a previously posted rom for the 280x that'll be great. I don't really care if it says D700, 280x, etc. in about this mac.

What I didn't see answered was the whole 7870 thing. Would I need a different rom?

Also, could I run the 7970 and 7950 crossfire in my 4.1 when in Windows?

Lastly, provided I can flash all these cards, will they all work in the 2.1 i.e. bootscreen too?

I'm in a crazy 4 video card situation and just trying to see my options between the two macs.

Again thank all of you for this thread.

The 280X ROM should work on the reference 7970, they share the same device ID.

Use the 280x ROM on the 7950 may not be a good idea, especially if the clock speed on the 280x is significantly higher than the 7950, that may cause instability. Also, their device ID are different.

I don't think the 280x ROM can be used on the 7870.

AFAIK, running 7970 + 7950 crossfire is possible. However, you have to figure out how to power both card together safely. Also, if you want to run crossfire, it's much better to boot from the non-EFI ROM, the Mac EFI may crash the system when crossfire enabled.

Best option is always making a custom ROM from the original vBIOS and the Mac EFI. 7950 and 7970 can be run from the same EFI (just needs device id change), 7870 additionally needs a framebuffer change or it'll lose many ports in OS X. The latter can be found over at netkas.org in the Radeon Port Mapping thread.

Guys, weird thing here.

Today arrived 32 gb of memory for my mac pro 1.1.
I test them, all well, mac sees it, did some benchmarks all well, i was editing for a while when i read that those ram should have those big heatsink, this haven´t.
So i swapped the heatsinks with the other 16g that i had been using.
Afther that the mac powers up and just in the log in the fans started to rev all the way in. There isn´t any cpu work or anything and with istats i can see that the temperatures are quite low. I opened the side lid and all its cold, even the air that comes out of the exhaust.

I did PRAM reset, and SMC reset, no luck, I swapped to the previous ram sticks, same thing fans revving high.

Any ideas?

I'd love to get the roms from netkas forum, but I can't register. I never get the account activation email no matter how many times I try and there's no way to contact the site admin... I got the 7950 yesterday, the 7870 today, and supposed to get the 7970 tomorrow, but my 8pin to 6pin connector wont come in the mail until next week. I want to try and flash the 7950 and 7870. I'm going to put the 7870 in my 2.1 and either the 7950/7970 in my 4.1. The power issue debate about the 7970 has me nervous though. However this pans out, I'm going to end up with extra cards that I'm going to sell for cheap or keep for a rainy day. Ideally I'll only use the 7970 in one 7950 in the other and that'll leave me with a 7870, 6870, GT 120, and a 8800gt for sale.
