See post 117 just a few above.
Direct comparison in this video at the 2:00 mark.

If you don't see any difference in dark conditions then maybe Apple has figured out something there, I don't have that comparison point in front of me.

I really like my 13 nano texture. I want another but they are supply constrained. Not sure why Apple refuses to stock them as they are clearly better must be flying off the shelves. Not sure who is buying the low ram glossy iPads

Yes, saw this one too.

My first impression in an Apple Store was definitely one of “wow this screws with the display contrast!” but at home, totally different story.

Yes, in bright light like in the apple stores the nano will probably always loose at first sight. People need to compare them in real life scenarios to make a decision.

I love watching movies with the iPad but even in a controlled light room I was so often able to see my face reflected in the black bars or in darker movie scenes. So annoying. No problem with the nano though.

I somehow think I would be bothered by the "less reflections but also less contrast" situation when watching movies and TV shows with light shining on the screen.

After watching all the reviews and looking at it at the Apple Store, I prefer "more reflections but also more contrast". But I can totally see the arguments of those who prefer the nano texture glass! I love the fact that they finally introduced it.

You guys made me order a nano iPad from Best Buy! It’ll come 1 day before my 14 day return window ends for my standard glass 11”, so I’ll have to decide fast if I like the nano texture. Unfortunately the nano texture I ordered isn’t the exact config I want so I’d either have to order and wait a month based on current lead times or keep checking in-store availability.

This is a great in-depth video comparing the nano to the regulat glass side by side. It’s in Japanese so I recommend turning on auto translate in the video settings.

His overall findings re that the nano reduces glare and reduces fingerprints, but there is a clear difference in contrast to the regular display, less vivid colours, and the text is not as sharp. In the video you can see the differences in black levels when the devices are being used side-by-side.

This video is great at demonstrating that in darker environments, the nano texture does NOT have a downside. And it has a tremendous upside in brighter lighting environments. I’m thrilled with how it has been working out.

The question is does it have a downside during regular daytime use - most people agree the colors seem less punchy, which makes sense because physics.

Hmm, sure. That’s from the diffusion of direction or indirect ambient lighting. But the glossy screen, while more contrasty and saturated, also has variable glare competing for your eyes attention (i.e. strain) which diminishes from the viewing experience. The ideal lighting situation for high visual things (Videos, etc.) is likely a darker room for either model.

Sure, it’s a battle of tradeoffs. Still, until (if ever) Apple starts offering the option on lower storage tiers, for me it’s sadly not a dilemma.

My 11” nano is still way out in June, but I have a question.

Has anyone used anything other than the Apple cloth to wipe it? Surely decent quality lint free, micro fibre cloths are fine for an occasional dry wipe down?

I don’t clean my screen much, largely because the speed with which it gets smudged is so quick it’s hardly worth the bother and I’ve trained myself not to “see” fingerprints and such. It’s just really egregious marks that motivate me to clean it, or when it’s become excessively dusty.

I’ve used both, preferred the standard glass mainly because it was easier to clean. Image quality wise, they both have trade offs and I liked the nano texture image a lot (but don’t work in the sun that often with my iPad which is really where it shines).

IMHO, the cleaning cloth isn’t to avoid damaging the display. I think the display is way more durable than that. I think they included it because it’s simply a bit harder to wipe away fingerprints. On standard glass, you can breathe on the display and wipe smudges away with your t-shirt. That doesn’t really work so well to wipe the nano texture glass so you need to use a polishing cloth - I think almost any microfibre cloth or proper cleaning cloth would do, I did try “regular ones” and it seemed fine - maybe not quite as effective as apple’s but also like 1/30 the price!

That said, I think fingerprints take longer to start showing up on the nano texture and they are hidden a bit better. So you might not need to wipe them away as often.

I’ve only tried the Apple-included cloth on my nano, but both the standard and nano show fingerprints but they seem much more apparent on the standard glass than on the nano screen? Definitely slightly easier to wipe on the regular screen but also more likely to be visible in the right lighting conditions on the standard display.

Yes, I think thats right. That was my experience too, and chose the standard display. If I worked outside more, no question I’d get the nano texture and just make sure I had a cleaning cloth nearby when needed. The benefits for that use case were huge.

I really want the nano screen... there are circumstances where having it would definitely be beneficial to my work (photo editing). But I can't say that it's an absolute essential, as those particular circumstances are somewhat sporadic, and are not major impediments.

So, what's holding me up is the fact that, because this option requires 1tb (I only need 256gb), it turns a purchase that is in the $1000 neighborhood into one that (with a new Pencil having to be purchased too) is approaching $2000, which is much harder to justify. If my work environment commonly involved those adverse conditions where the nano would make a significant difference, I'd likely be willing to spend the money for it. But for me, it falls into the "that would be really nice to have, but I can live without it" category... I'd absolutely spend the extra $100, but I (at least at the moment... subject to change on a impulse-purchase whim) can't bring myself to spend that much money when my M1 is working just fine.

A secondary factor is that I'm a little miffed at Apple for only making this available for 1tb and 2tb. Perhaps production capacity of these screens is a constraining factor, so they figure they might as well get the most profit out of them that they can by tying this feature to their premium-priced higher storage options, hoping to nudge some buyers to opt for more storage than they need. Or maybe production capacity is not a factor but the thinking is that those who are going to really need this kind of screen are video production people who have more of a need for higher capacity anyway, so they don't want to clog up the inventory chain with 8 additional models that no one is going to want to buy anyway (due to the lower storage not meeting their needs). But if it is indeed the latter, it sounds like that might be a miscalculation, as it seems that there are actually quite a few people that like the nano screen even for casual use, or those like me who want it for work purposes but don't need that much storage.

Regardless, I hesitate to become a "this guy who has always bought 128gb-256gb iPads sprang for the 1tb just to get the nano screen" statistic on Tim Cook's spreadsheet. If they open it up to the lower capacities, I'll likely buy one. Until then, I'll probably just stay put with my M1 for at least another year or two.

Thanks.

I use my 11" iPP chiefly at work, on the go, on trains, outside and such, so nano was a no brainer the moment they announced it. I've had a matte screen protector on my 11" 2018 for years for precisely this reason (ie not for protection).

Yes, any microfiber cloth sold specifically for displays and lenses should be fine.

Same. I love my iPad, but I never needed more than 256. 256 was - and still is - a sweet spot for me. Even with Procreate, CSP, all my apps and all my comic books and mangas, I have around 100Gb free. Jumping to the nano texture, as nice as it seems, would be a 900 euro jump for me, and I would have to wait a while to get it (it's still "not yet available" even for preorder here). 900 euros is a lot of money just to get a texture which also has some downsides. If it was just a 100 euro more, I might consider it.

I on the other hand, having decided to replace my iPad Pro M1 (partly because of a vertical line on the screen that appeared last Summer) and after trying the standard model for a week, I decided to replace it with the nano one because I believe it is one of the most important improvements of the new iPad Pro and then because I will keep it for a few years. However, I have to wait one more month....

Definitely keep an eye on Apple Store inventory if there are any near you… they seem to restock them randomly
They seem to restock on Tuesdays if I recall correctly. I was watching the Inventory Watch app earlier today and managed to snag the one 11” space black nano texture within 250 miles near me, which just popped up today randomly. Problem is, it’s a nearly 3 hour drive one way… may hold off to see if it comes in stock to a store closer by within the next 7 days.

Try Best Buy. I was able to get an 11 inch last week. I’m going to be exchanging it for a 13 inch Thursday, when my order should be ready.

Now, if I could just get a cellular one I’d be super happy.

My local Apple Store does not seem to get any in. I’ve been hawking it via Inventory Watch myself.

I have one coming in from Best Buy tomorrow as well 🤦‍♂️ but since it’s not cellular I won’t be keeping it even if I decide to stick with the nano texture. Going to try it for a day before my 14 day return window ends on Thursday for my standard glass model!
