I am excited about the ATI HD4850 chip in the iMac. I got this off the site and it impresses me over Nvidia. I see on the site where it said it will upgrade your regular dvds to like HD viewing. I did not see Nvidia say that at all.

Here is only part of what I read on the ATI site.

So does any one know how much power (Watt) the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 card draws? (yes I Googled & MRoogled before asking)
On the ATI/AMD site, there is no mention of the power draw this card has.
http://ati.amd.com/products/mobilityradeonhd4800/specs.html

The NVidia GT 130 draws a max of 75 Watts.
http://www.nvidia.com/page/apple.html
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gt_130_us.html

All I could find is this: No actual wattage amount but this looks promising.

Dynamic Power Management – Delivers high performance when needed and conserves power when demand on the graphics processor is low (DC mode) for long battery life.

More Performance-Per-Watt – ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4000 series focuses on power efficiency delivering performance-per-watt improvement over previous generation AMD discrete graphics for exceptional performance with low power consumption.

Energy Efficient Manufacturing Process – Enjoy cool and quiet operation with energy efficient 2nd generation 55nm manufacturing process, which helps reduce power consumption for optimal performance per watt.

I did find this if this is what you are looking for?

ATI Radeon HD 4850: one teraFLOPS of visual compute power
The ATI Radeon HD 4850, immediately available with a suggested retail price of USD$199, received an enthusiastic welcome from global graphics reviewers.

The ATI Radeon HD 4850 is the world’s first teraFLOPS graphics chip, with 800 stream processing cores (identical to the ATI Radeon HD 4870), a stock GPU core clock speed of 625 MHz, 512 MB of GDDR3 memory rated at 2 gigabits/second, and comes in a single-slot PCI Express 2.0 configuration with a maximum board power of 110 watts.

I've tried google it for a while, but couldn't find any official words about it. However, on Notebookcheck.com:
AMD published a current consumtion of about 45-65 Watt for the HD 4850-4870. Still it is unclear if this value represents the chip alone or the whole mxm board including the memory (which would include about 5 Watt).

Compared to the desktop ATI Radeon HD 4850, the mobile 4850 features a slower core clock and therfore should perform in the region of the desktop HD 4830.

I can't find any information regarding power consumption on Ati's website though.

I am begging: benchmarks. I have an offer from someone with a last-gen 8800GS iMac with 750GB and the only reason I'd like a new one is the new ATi card. This is fairly critical for my buying priorities

The 4850 (using RV770 Pro architecture) uses 227w under load according to benchmarks at Anandtech. Keep in mind we don't know what architecture is in the iMac.

Also never go off manufactures numbers when you are looking power consumption. Video card manufactures don't give real world numbers and you end up using more power than you expect.

Thanks for feedback WizardHunt, but the 110 Watts must/ought to be the Desktop & not Mobile ATI 4850 card.

Thanks GamaFu, I also found that infowhile Googleing, but the 45-65 range (+5 if memory not in included) seem a bit wage. I would like to know the exact power consumption; like the specs supplied by Nvidia. I do not understand why ATI/AMD is being so secretive about this information.

that looks like a crazy good gpu. not a budget chip at all. cant wait!!!

I am getting the sneaky suspicion this will turn out like the last ATI vs Nvidia battle.

The ATI will be better for graphic applications and Nvidia for games... until the drivers catch up. I remember the 2600 days

i doubt they'd be charging extra for the ati card if it was slower than the gt130.

I'm no WoW expert so how do these stats compare to 8800GS stats?

It's hard to compare WoW benchmarks since you have to be logged in at the same time and be in the same location facing the same direction to really compare the numbers.

One good GPU benchmark for WoW we created in consultation with WoW Mac programmers is to go to FireTree realm and stand at the totem pole at the entrance to Narache Village, "start zone." I have a Warrior run East to the big tree at the top of the hill and back to the totem pole. That provides a consistent reference for GPU framerates. I use Titan Performance plugin to capture min, max, and average FPS.

When you go to a busy location where there's a RAID going in, it's a mixture of CPU and GPU -- and again -- you must be logged in at the same time standing in the same spot and facing in the same direction to compare two different Macs. That's something us forum members may be able to do cooperatively to get an accurate comparison between various flavors of Mac.

FYI, we at Bare Feats Labs have a 3.06 on order with the 4850. Ordered it on March 9th. As soon as it arrives, we'll run WoW and a whole bunch of other GPU benchmarks to compare it to the iMacs with clock speed but with GeForce 130 GT and GeForce 8800 GS. We'll add a few Mac Pros and slower iMacs to the graphs for perspective.

- Thanks DELTAsnake for the feedback, but I do believe that 227 Watts, is for the DT & not the Mobile version of the ATI HD 4850 card.
- As Bad Paper indicated in his earlier post, we now know that the iMac is using the Mobile 55nm variant of the ATI HD 4850 card.
Hey for those of you who wanted GPU-Z on the 4850, here ya go:

I neither know nor care what this means, but can you figure out whether it's desktop or laptop? I assume it's the laptop version.

That's great news, as it doesn't appear any faster information is forthcoming. I don't think that people understand that it's entirely possible that the drivers for this card will be half baked, with the performance suffering as a result. This could also result in visual driver glitches, over heating etc.

Many of us with outstanding orders are biting our nails right now to get the real scoop on what these cards offer over the GT130 not only in terms of performance but in terms of stability, etc.

If some of you want to lay some groundwork on the 4850 vs others 3D OpenGL performance, I recommend running OpenGL Extensions Viewer's test at 1920x1200 and/or 1280x800 at 32 bit fullscreen, standard framebuffer, 4x Multisampling, 8X Anisotropy, Use Fog, Benchmark, and Transparency enabled.

Here's the link for downloading the app:
http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/download.html

For example, just looking at the OpenGL 2.1 result for the 2009 iMac 3.06GHz with GeForce 130 GT, I get...
124 fps at 1920x1200

The 2008 iMac 3.06GHz with GeForce 8800 GS gets...
123 fps at 1920x1200

The 2009 Mac Pro 2.93GHz Nehalem 8-core with Radeon HD 4870 gets...
179 fps at 1920x1200

If it matters… iMac G5 2.0 with ATI 9600

OpenGL 2.1 @ 1280x800 32bpp
44 fps
OpenGL 2.0
25 fps

How valid is this test? I just ran it with my macbook with GM950. The results are:

OpenGL 2.1 1440 x 900
110 FPS

That sounds a bit high for a integrated graphics

I ordered mine on March, 5th. They shipped it on April, 9th. Unfortunately the courier didn't find me at home.

Since tomorrow in Italy is a national holiday I think I will receive my ATI4850 based iMac by Tuesday, 14th :D :D

Ciao ciao!

Fabio

Consider yourself lucky. I also ordered on March 5 around 2 a.m,
and I still have no idea where in the world my iMac is. :(
Did you pay extra for the shipping? Or just the normal free shipping?

:apple: Please just ship our iMacs out already!

I ordered an iMac with the ATi 4850 on March 6 and after 20 days and over that I should wait for a BTO I got a call from the company that imports Apple and told me that there is some tech problem with this card for the iMacs and if i persisted on having it I should wait till May or June..so I had it changed for the GT 130 that ''I'll have to be patient only for like 20 days again''. Fortunately the iMac is not for me :D

You are running at a much lower resolution, it's pushing 2/3 the pixels.

We need someone with a 4850 to run the test for comparison, not people chiming in with their random resolutions and chipsets.

45-65 watts.
