Why do so many give your used stuff to your wives? You’re not the only one, just on the first page 3 people said they give their “old” ipads to their wives. Are they not worth new ones? Why do you not keep the 2018 model and buy her a new one? Heck, if she doesn’t need a pro, get a cheaper one and save the money, but I am always so surprised that the wives get the hand downs. Mine would smack me around the head if I suggested something like that. And rightly so.

In my household, I’m the one interested in iPhones and iPads, so I’m the one who likes to upgrade. I pass them on to my husband and daughters, with the exception of my husband’s latest iPhone as he did buy the iPhone X brand new. He’s more interested in different tech like XBox, projectors, AMPs and pinball machines. So overall, I still spend less than he does, but I’m the one that buys the latest Apple products. If he was interested in the latest Apple products and wanted to spend less in those other areas, then I’m fine with that, but it’s what he chooses to do and what I choose to do.

giving tech to family is my excuse to upgrade. I got my cracked 7 plus replaced (open replacement, looks brand new) then gave it to my dad whose iphone 6 was broken to get the 8 plus. He holds it in sentimental value because that was when my career started taking off and he keeps his 7 plus in a super thick case.

I gave my 5s to my mom when I got the 6. The 5s was actually worth a lot of sentimental value since I used it to travel the first time.

I gave the gf (now the wife) my 8 plus (I got the xs max). Then gave her my 2018 12.9 ipad pro so i can get the 11 2020. None of these individuals care to spend money on tech and they got the best paid model that was a year old, paid off aka free from me. All phone are paid off and unlocked.

With regard to your iPad, you moved from an 12.9” (2018) to the 11” (2020), right? Any regrets in “downsizing” the screen size? What were you reasons for doing so?

Glad you’re thinking that extra 2GB of RAM is something you see in your everyday usage, bravo Tim Cook
I get that it doesn’t seem worth it and it might not be. If i hadn’t of got rid of my 2018 12.9 i would have not upgraded. Poor decision on my part but even buying a refurb from apple the difference was like £100 less for the 2018 model so for me it made more sense getting the 2020 12.9....more ram and doubles the storage.

if i could get a refurb for like £600 i would have maybe gone down that route.

There's no reason anyone should unless they have more money (or sense) to throw away. Anyone claiming it's for more RAM is just justifying in a way that makes their purchase "valid" so to say. By the time the actual 6GB of RAM is utilized, new iPad models will be out and, once again, these people will sell this version to upgrade AGAIN. Ironically, if it was for the AR tech that's fine, but I noticed no one actually said that lol.

In the past, upgrading yearly was indeed beneficial because the technological leaps were significant. Nowadays it's incremental. Really this model was really to entice some of the other people still using older models, not for those with the 2018 model.

How dare you bring common sense into an upgrade discussion on Macrumors! :D

I went from 11” to 12.9” but most likely would have upgraded my 11” anyway for fun and more RAM. Getting new devices is fun so I’m planning to get the next iteration too.

That’s the spirit. As a shareholder I can only welcome that. Purchasing every iteration is fun! Please don’t forget to get one of each! :)

Geez, project much? Maybe, just maybe, it’s because many wives (or husbands) just don’t care that much about technology and are fine with something other than the latest and greatest. In fact, if you gave them the latest and greatest, they probably wouldn’t even want it.

Well said. But here the handing down is just an attempt at justifying a new purchase.

Always have to chuckle when seeing posts like “my wife was keen on my old iPad “. Yeah right.

Where did Tim even mention that? Apple generally doesn’t say much if anything about iPad RAM. in fact didn’t people have to wait for benchmarks to learn about the extra RAM?

But in order to stay on topic: WHY?
What was it that drove you to upgrade, more storage? Cellular?

Yeah exactly, I saw the chance to upgrade more than simply comparing 2018 vs 2020. To me, it was primarily about storage, cellular, and display size. The icing on the cake was the RAM increase and LiDAR.

The issue with focusing on just one aspect of upgrade is the fact you have to buy an entire device. It’s why it’s recommend to make the initial investment bigger to prevent that from happening. Or you could just purchase an external storage device which is significantly cheaper versus purchasing a whole new device outright.

Thanks! Interesting that you see some improvements in MS Office. I do find it a bit slower on iOS devices compared to Android and Windows btw. Not sure why. What do you see as an improvement when it comes to PDF files?

For MSOffice I am seeing the improvements in larger spreadsheet handling, smoother presentations, and smoother loads/updating in complex Word docs.

For pdfs, larger formatted documents with embedded objects. Overall just running smoother especially if updating or edits.

I can see the value of the ipad for reseach and table top use. Using split screen with the 12.9in, one side a sketch pad, and the other a safari browser. But I use my ipad 90% on the couch or in bed. The 12.9 is too big for that. I would totally get a 12.9 when the first gens drop in price to something more reasonable. So I will have two. Use the 12.9 ipad like a tool I need from time to time.

I really like the 11 for my current use. Also great for gaming like pubg mobile since the 12.9 is just too big. I can use it like a mobile notebook in a much easier way, less unweildy.

The cons, are the obvious. Having a 12.9 allows you to have side by side full size apps. So its less ideal for studying. I need to use my laptop for bigger screen duties like reseach for my contracting side job. With the 12.9 you can have two fullscreen apps., plus slide over for other research items.

I say if you can only get one, ask your self what you will use it for. For studying and research for school and work and you will work on a desk or table, 12.9 bar none. But for sitting on the couch and in bed, the 11. is the way to go.

Not necessarily. I personally don't like 12.9" iPad Pros and 13.3" Mac laptops, even for working on a desk... when I'm away from home. Thus, I own the 10.5" iPad Pro and 12" MacBook.

The caveat though is my main home work machines are a dual 27" iMac side-by-side with a 24" Windows 10 PC.

It's all about personal preference of course.

12.9 for me would i love is spilt screen apps. I use this everyday without fail. On the 11 inch pro i found it not really enough space for my liking for usage over a long period of time.

my 12.9 is used on my lap and during working hours and i use my pro max when on the sofa which i feel is big enough to use over a long time laying around. Media wise though i would use my 12.9 but generally phone use is fine for apps and general browsing.

I have no idea about your wife but I know how folks tend to justify GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) pretty well.

I will be the first to admit that I do that at times. ?

In many cases a family member will have a need for a new device. If they can use a hand me down, that is generally what they get as I am usually more able to buy new. Works for me!

That method worked quite well in the early days. Not so much now when even 3+ year old devices still perform very well.

Asked my mom if she wants to update her iPad Pro 9.7. All I got was "Why? My iPad works perfectly fine." Before that, she was using an iPad 3 and she would have continued using it if not for her banking apps not working on older iOS.

That's the issue with my family. By 2017, everyone already had good iPads which still work perfectly okay to this day.

Primary reason we still update iPhones is mostly battery. Alas, iPad batteries last a long time even degraded. ?

I can only speak for my wife, but she is ecstatic whenever I get a new device and she gets my hand me down. I am a developer and frequently update devices for testing and my wife just wouldn’t spend the money on a tablet for her own use. But she loves getting mine after I upgrade and is actually supportive of it - never once got a smack around the head for an upgrade!

We all know what the real reason is for upgrading from the 2018 to the 2020 IPP. It’s obvious. It’s the brighter True Tone flash ?

I get that 6GB of ram is a nice upgrade, but if I already owned the 2018 IPP and was happy with the size, I’d be hard pressed to come up with any justification other than ”I’ve just got a lot of extra cash laying around...and it’s not getting used”;)

Coming from something older than the 2018....sure, grab the 2020 and be done with it...unless that is you can get a fantastic deal on a 2018 model! With the 2020, they’re giving you 2GB more ram and an enticing base level storage option of 128gb that will be plenty enough for many, many users.

I ordered a 12.9 2020 128gb with the student discount for $1169 (Canada) but the 64gb 2018 refurbs popped back up on the store yesterday for $899. I ordered one as well just to secure it - now trying to decide which one I should keep once they both arrive...any suggestions?

Depends on your storage needs.
