If ram was so important then why you didn’t bought the 1TB version of the 2018 models? It included 6GB of RAM.

I ordered a 12.9 2020 128gb with the student discount for $1169 (Canada) but the 64gb 2018 refurbs popped back up on the store yesterday for $899. I ordered one as well just to secure it - now trying to decide which one I should keep once they both arrive...any suggestions?

It depends on whether the areas of improvement are worth the extra $270 to you.

1. 50% extra RAM.
2. Twice the storage space.
3. Wifi 6.
4. Studio quality mic.
5. Super wide angle camera.
6. Lidar sensor, first in any apple product. More fluid AR performance.
7. Enhanced thermal architecture and tuned performance controllers. Better sustained performance.
8. 14% increase in GPU core count.
9. Possibly longer iOS support.

Why do so many give your used stuff to your wives? You’re not the only one, just on the first page 3 people said they give their “old” ipads to their wives. Are they not worth new ones? Why do you not keep the 2018 model and buy her a new one? Heck, if she doesn’t need a pro, get a cheaper one and save the money, but I am always so surprised that the wives get the hand downs. Mine would smack me around the head if I suggested something like that. And rightly so.

Is this some pathetic attempt at you bringing sexism into this topic? Yikes

-The ”studio quality“ mic is bogus
-have fun using the Lidar sensor daily
-Enhanced thermal? LOL, the insides are 99.9% identical, there was no thermal or performance issues with the 2018 model
-I’m sure you’re really noticing that 14% GPU increase
-By the time the 2018 iPad Pro is no longer supported by Apple the 2020 iPad Pro will also be ancient tech

If you plan on keeping for a few years I would go with the newer model.

Why are you so angry about the new iPads?

You created a topic, asking a fair question, but then proceeded to attack everyone who replies with anything that doesn’t agree with you. Overcompensating for something.

I ended up going with the refurb 2018, though a lot of that was timing—I could get the 2018 immediately and works have had to wait for the 2020. I am really loving the 12.9–for me it was an upgrade to my 2017, which I wanted for a number of reasons, and that change in form factor makes a HUGE difference in my enjoyment. Now I have to figure out what to do with my 2017.

Because spending £400 more just for 1TB is extreme?
Yes, but upgrading the minute a new model comes out even if its a minor update like the new iPad pro is also extreme. All the people who do this should just bought the max iPad from the start if 2GB more ram was so important to them.

The only thing I‘M wondering these days with people who upgraded everytime a new model comes out is, do you upgrade your computer every year or two ? In the early ages of smartphones and tablets, it was understandable to upgrade almost every year or 2 because the performance wasn’t that great back in the time, but these days its not an issue anymore and I literally don’t see any real difference between the 2018 ipad and the new one. I know the argument that you’ll sell the old one, but in the long run, I think you’ll lose money as well instead of just keeping your device for at least 4 years.

The new magic keyboard for iPad case is way more interesting than the new iPads itself lol.

Yes, usually. I will at least rebuild my gaming desktop in a new case every year to switch it up. Sometimes more than once a year and sometimes I sell the old one and rebuild from scratch after a year.

Good question. I don't. I upgrade my laptop (main computer) every 4 years. I mean completely changing the device. That being I said I do want to expand the RAM of my existing one. It has 8 GB RAM and is OK but it can handle up to 32 GB. It has second slot that is currently not used so I will definitely upgrade it later this year (once the isolation is over) and put at least one 16 GB in that slot. We will see if I will keep it 24 GB or will exchange also the first slot from 8 to 16.

In the early ages of smartphones and tablets, it was understandable to upgrade almost every year or 2 because the performance wasn’t that great back in the time, but these days its not an issue anymore and I literally don’t see any real difference between the 2018 ipad and the new one. I used to upgrade my phones every 2 years. However this year I doubt that I will do it. My personal phone (Sony) was bought around this time 2 years ago but it is doing quite well for what I need it for - maps, GPS and phone calls. The company gave me iPhone 8 as company phone last year February and is doing well but I use it mostly for emails reading and company chat. So overall I don't see why I should upgrade them as I use them for basic stuff.

The new magic keyboard for iPad case is way more interesting than the new iPads itself lol.

In general I agree with you but I would not be surprised if iPadOS 14 makes the iPads interesting themselves. In other words they might introduce changes that indeed need 6 GB RAM. I guess we will wait and see.

That's pretty sexist of you to suggest that women only value shiny brand-new things.

A .5 upgrade of a model if I have ever seen one, but barely constitute as even a .1 upgrade. Even if you have money to burn I don’t see anyone updating to this model. Unless you’re that one person who wanted the LIR camera
The Market Apple was tapping wasn’t the 2018 iPad Pro crowd. It was the 10.5” and 9.7” Early iPad Pro buyers.

No issues with the 4gb of ram on my 2018. Saved about 250 bucks over the 2020

I’m holding out for the next iPad Pro, as I think my 2018 is doing great. I do hand my Apple devices to my kids to act as secondary devices. Because they too like the latest and greatest. Plus, the re-sale value of the devices aren’t enough to make me forego handing them down to the kids.
