Restoring from backup worked. All apps are back including Cydia. I'm on 3.12 and I still have the tethering option available, but it doesn't work.

That was my next question....why do I need ireb.
I have a 3GS on OS 3.0. I am using itunes 8.2.0.23
I thought the whole point was that I install the custom IPSW and I am done.
Since its a 3.1.2 IPSW it should be verified by the apple OS validation process..right?
Can anyone tell me why I'd want the 1GB partition over the 500MB one?

I owned an Iphone 3g 16gb and it's factory unlocked... I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to point me to the location where I can get the custom ipsw base on latest baseband (not the old 4.26 baseband) non activated.
I gave up on jailbreaking with blackra1n.
It is pretty unfortunate that none of my friends around me owned a mac... so I cannot create my own ipsw

Page three of this thread. Select your correct file(s) and download them, extract them and then you will have one single IPSW, then simply run Itunes Shift+click restore and let the pc take it from there.

I currently have a 3GS at 3.0 jailbroken and unlocked on ATT as my carrier. I am downloading the 500mb 3GS unactivated update. Will my jailbreak and unlock remain or do I have to redo both of them? I understand the base band will remain the same. Thanks!

This should answer your question. Go down to bottom section of links. More explanations. I have a 2G and my unlock remained. I cant speak for a 3GS and yes those links will jailbreak it.

havent heard anything from the dev team yet...seems like they are having trouble as its been awhile!
What did you use to jailbreak, a custome ipsw from pwnage tool or Blackra1n? My cousin has a 3GS with 3.1.2 out of box and I was wondering how I should jailbreak his phone.
Seems pwnage is preferred if you're purist looking for stability - or am I out in left field on this?
Do i need a special custom.ipsw if the 3.1.2 3GS is virgin? (got it used and not sure if it was previously modded or not)
Making it Blackra1n is the easy way out..
It took me a long time to upgrade my 2G from 1.1.4 to 2.2.1 (this july) so I demand stability and performance!

Hi. I have an iPhone 3Gs 32gb. It's on O2 monthly contract. I don't use it with any other network. It's jailbroken on 3.0.1 I can't remember what tool I uses to jailbrake it. I'm sure it wasn't purpleraine. I did initially use that but wasn't to happy as I believe the phone wasn't stable. I want to upgrade but not to sure which ipsw activated or unactivated. I'm sure it's the unactivated version.
Also I have a lot of apps on the iPhone, photos, videos. Do they get backed up when I do a system backup. Or should I use any specific tools. I belive last time I downloaded a tool within cydia. I forget the name however it backed all my cydia downloads. It was very easy to re-install them all. If anyone knows the name of that tool please post it

PkgBackup for your Cydia Apps and AppBackup for your iTunes Apps. If you are using iTunes and syncing your iPhone on your computer then you are backing up Contacts, Settings, etc., you really aren't "backing up" your Apps, you "Sync" those back from your computer.
