I dont think thats due to thermal, but due to your ssd cache filled up.

You dont have to continuously run the speedtest, run it for 1-2 times is enough, since thats how likely u will used your macbook in daily task,

unless you copying and extra big file continuously, your cache shouldnt filled up that quickly.
Some reports after some days of use. The speed has now increased and has steadily settled around 1700w/2100r, everything’s works flawlessly, except a rarely question mark when boot with the power adaptor plugged...I just bought the WD SN520, but I‘m not very sure to test it, I‘m afraid its performance is far below sabrent. Has anyone tried it?

Hi guys,
Quick feedback.

I bought a Samsung Evo 970 Plus 1To during Prime Day.
Works flawlessly (see 1st image in attached files)
NO ISSUES detected : no question mark on boot, no hibernation issues, no battery draining.

I've used this command :
sudo pmset -b sleep 10 disksleep 5 hibernatemode 25 autopoweroff 0 standbydelaylow 300 standbydelayhigh 300
&& RESET SMC & NVRAM

Two minor issues :
First, this SSD is hot (see 2nd image in attached files).
Second, my MacBook is now wobbly, so if anyone has a solution, let me know.

Hope it helps, feel free to ask questions

PS : I'm using my Macbook everyday for web & motion design + photo & video edit which includes : Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Lightroom ect..

The Samsung evo 970 it’s a 2280 format, instead the Ngff ssd adapter for MacBook Pro 13 late 2016/mid 2017 can accept nvme ssd’s in 2230 and 2242 format, so if you put an ssd longer than that, the back cover can have some deformation, ‘cause that format is out of MacBook clearance...anyway, to maintain the thinnest profile, you can remove the two female screws from the adapter, be sure to isolate the underlying circuits...

Yeah, I knew it was inappropriate format but specs are better as Sabrent.
Already removed all screws & isolated SSD

I received few days ago the WD SN520 512gb ssd, I removed the sabrent 1tb and did a catalina fresh install on the WD...sadly, I was unable to finish the installation correctly, ’cause it seems that my macbook, paired with the sn520, could not restart and complete the installation, I had to force restart by turning the Mac via the power button several times. I’ve tried to install Catalina two or three times, but every time the same reboot issue. Probably a defective unit, so I return the wd sn520.

Thats a shame. Hopefully they replace it with good unit. As for performance, i doubt it will be better than Sabrent.

What tape you used to tape down the ssd ? You might want to replace it with a thermal tape, so it can do two jobs, one is taping your ssd down, other is spreading the heat faster to the whole base cover. I use it in few installations, and the temp only averaging around 46 even on load.

as for wobbly, it's because the thickness between L & R side of the base is likely different now. What i can suggest is to, again use a thermal tape (or pad) to create the same thickness on another side of the board, so when you put back the cover, it doesnt have different space gap inside.

No need to undo some screws, as it still can fit just fine.

Here's my latest installation, combined with NVMEfix, idle is good around 0,4W

Btw about the question mark folder, be more careful with that (example, put more caution to when you need to plug or unplug your charger)

on one of the first installation i did, that issue happened (due to SSD combination, which i never use again for this model on next installation until now). And after months, the SSD is dead out of the blue, it wont detected in any computer, i even tried it on windows. This is probably because of the repeating sudden power cut that happen when the issue appear. Some ssd is more sensitive to power outage as far as i know, and probably this particular model did so.

Luckily i can send it back to the seller and get a replacement (it come with 5 years warranty) in quick manner. But to prevent further issue, i simply installed it on older model (2015 one) and use another SSD which i know wont cause question mark issue to replace the one died on the aformentioned A1708

I request a full refund, the only reason that I’m leading to use the WD instead the sabrent, was for eliminate the “light issues” encountered with the sabrent...but in the end, from what I’ve seen for a short time during the installation, you’re right, isn’t better than the sabrent, from a performance perspective.

there’s no workaround for the question mark issue? or, other than wd sn520, there’s another 2242 nvme ssd (maybe 1tb) that won’t cause this issue?

Where does one get these adapters? I'm surprised it has taken so long for aftermarket drives for the non-touchbar 2016 and 2017 13" 2-port MacBook Pros to come out. At least something like this exists and it works! :)

Yes, Hynix BC511. But kinda hard to find since it's not a retail model.

another is Netac N930 (this one has similar to same performance with SN520)

This 2280 does not seems to produce so much heat thanks to better efficiency
Maybe worth to try

This model is actually been quite around since sometimes. And by the look at it, it add some resistors to the board. This might have to do with either the current or voltages adjustment from the SSD to the board or vice versa.

On any of PCB of NVME enclosure, you will find something similar.

Never seen 9 resistors in one adapter thats why i ask..cuz eventualy im using non resistor model and after your reply im worry about, it can jeopartize the macbook!!

I've ordered the NFHK A1708 adapter and a Sabrent 2242 512gb, should both be here by Friday. If I've already done all the backing up I need then is all I need to do switch out the drives and then boot from a USB? Is Mojave better for booting than Catalina?

They are mostly capacitors and 1/2 resistors

Thanks for the information..got two questions: )...so do you think that model of adapter is safer then the popular one that most of the people using atm...and is it possible The capacitors or resistors which coded such as c1 c2 c3 ..are about sleep comment/signal ?
