Did you do full "hygiene" steps after doing the upgrade ?, which is :

1. Reset SMC
2. Reset NVRAM
3. Rebuild Kext cache by doing safe boot (hold shift) one time and shut down (shutdown, not reboot)
4. Set up "Startup Disk" from System Preferences - Startup Disk

From my experience, this prevent and help 99% of issue that might happen with NVME upgrade.

Yes, I have tried all of those steps. Are you using Sintech adapter with A1708 model? Maybe if more people can test out the theory. Just leave adapter plugged in, boot to OS, while adapter still plugged in, shut down macbook, then press power button and see if it either boots or you get a question mark. If you don't have this issue can you post what adapter and SSD you are using and what year your macbook is. I will try another SSD to see if I get same issue.

I did test with a 2280 size SSD and it didn't have same issue as the nano ssd, so it seems like the Nano only has the issue where it's not recognized when shutting down with adapter plugged in.

Hi
I just did the test this morning

Adapter : Sintech
Model : A1708 (original 128GB, i5, 2017)
SSD : Sabrent 1TB 2242

I did not have this issue.
It did happen only when my battery was completely empty and tried to boot with charger plugged in but it only happened once and I couldn’t reproduce it

Ok so I have done testing with sintech adapter and another brand, I also tried 2 different macbooks, 3 different ssd. The sabrent nano ssd with sintech adapter still has issue where the ssd is not detected when you shutdown macbook with charger plugged in, then turn it on and SSD can't be read, have to always shutdown down macbook, then unplug charger then plug it in for SSD to work. The wierd part is on other macbook it does same thing with nano ssd, but I installed a different SSD and it was working perfectly with no issues, I left it in sleep overnight now it has same issue where SSD not recognized when shutting down with charger plugged in. It's either adapter issue, macbooks firmware issue? Because even if you don't have OS installed it will still not detect SSD if you shutdown.

I have a 2017 Macbook Pro and after reviewing a lot of discussions online, bought the Sintech Adapter & Sabrent Rocket 1GB drive this week

Sintech M.2 NVMe SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2016 2017 13" MacBook PRO A1708 Non-Touch Bar Models(Late 2016-Mid 2017 Year)
Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2242 DRAM-Less Low Power Internal High Performance SSD (SB-1342-1TB)

The flashing folder icon was displayed when system was restarted after connecting the Adapter/SSD. Connected the system to power & pressed Command+R to start macOS Recovery.

The Disk Utility did not display the SSD. Launched the terminal and executed "diskutil list" as a work around; still the SSD is not listed.

So disconnected the adapter/ssd and went back to original drive and booted the system without any issue for now.

Any idea what could be the issue? is it adapter / SSD? Should I try to format the SSD using external enclosure and try again?

Did you installed MacOS from scratch ?
For me I cloned the original drive using CCC and an external enclosure
And I did an SMC reset as well and everything is fine
I also used the command I listed few pages before against the battery drain during idle

It's new SSD. I was hoping to install the OS through the macOS Recovery utility.

I received an external enclosure today. When I connect the SSD via the enclosure it is visible to Mac and I was able to format the drive exFat to mac os extended journaled format. Then connected and restart the Mac with the new SSD once again. Disk Utility once again failed to identify the SSD.

So now I'm thinking the issue could be because of the connector I received. I am going to order NFHK adapter from aliexpress and see if that will resolve the issue

Hello. So after a while, i decided to share my impressions with you. I have a Macbook Pro 2017 an decided to give the NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD Adapter from ebay
Bildschirmfoto 2020-09-13 um 10.49.52.png

a try and i also ordered the Sabrent rocket 1 TB 2242 SSD. Waiting for the Adapter, i watched the video at the beginning of this thread and was prepared to install the new SSD. After doing this, i recognized a wobbling backcover. It maked a knocking noise when lifting it up with my hands on the backcover. The reason was the strip that covers the battery connection. I hadn't fixed it right back so it didn't stop the pressure on the backcover when you lift it up and so the noise was created. After putting it right back over the battery connection it doesn't make the noise anymore.

After starting the Macbook, i could install MacOS with an USB-Installer.

1. First formated the new SSD as journald-Format, so the SSD was recognized as a install Partition.
2. After installing, everything went fine. But the writing speed was not better then the original apple SSD (about 600 mb/s) but after indexing and let the Macbook "work" with the new files, the speed is now about 1500 mb/s, so everything is fine.
Bildschirmfoto 2020-09-13 um 10.49.28.png

But i have recognized a hughe battery drain (around 1,25 % per hour when the lid is closed). I have read a lot through the diffrent forums an learned, that it has to do something with the power management. I have tried a lot of commands putting them into the terminal but nothing helped.

Now, after still reading this thread i have used the command from #119 in this thread (thx to Darktidor).

sudo pmset -b sleep 10 disksleep 5 hibernatemode 25 autopoweroff 0 standbydelaylow 300 standbydelayhigh 300

After restarting my Macbook and doing a SMC reset, now the Macbook lost about 2% over night when the lid is closed. It has to do something with the hibernatemode 25. The Macbook need some seconds more to wake up because of the "extrem" hibernatemode, but is ok and tolerable because of the better battery standby-time.

I hope i could help some people out there and after all i can said, that the SSD upgrade was successfully installed.

Only thing thats not working out of the box was the hibernate problem which was fixed with the command before and the smc reset.

You can't use internet recovery to clean install a new NVME SSD. Create USB Installer and boot using it. You should be able to see the new SSD from the disk utility inside the installer. I would suggest a mojave installer as well. Everything about catalina is such a mess.

Don't bother both adapters are doing this issue as I have the same issue. I am still working trying to resolve the issue, my guess is it's either the SSD or the design of the adapter. I also tried like 5 of the HFHK adapters all have same issues, same with Sintech. I think if your battery is fully charged it might not do the issue. I don't think formatting SSD will have any effect, for some reason when you shut down macbook with adapter plugged in the SSD gets completely disabled until you replug the ac adapter. I have tried different OS, different firmware version, still same thing, only thing that did work for me was using different brand SSD, but that only worked for a day after I left it on sleep it went back to same thing.

If you still able to try, tried one with SM2263XT controller and Micron or Intel NAND,

Yes, the speed will be only around 2100/1600, but from 3 units i installed, there's no question mark folder issue.

I tried with one SSD that using their proprietary controller (surely u know which brand) and it indeed giving that question mark when the macbook is plugged and turned on. I think this is kinda like the macbook wrongly detect the charger as thunderbolt storage, or wrongly allocate PCI bandwith to it

Thank you for such a detailed info. I have the same model of MacBook Pro, same adapter, same NVMe but 2tb instead of 1, I tried "sudo pmset -b sleep 10 disksleep 5 hibernatemode 25 autopoweroff 0 standbydelaylow 300 standbydelayhigh 300" and reset SMC but MacBook just won't wake up, need to manually restart it. What can be the problem?

I everyone.
I read this topic since its early times, as I bought both the NFHK adapter and the 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nano 2242 SSD.
I have had the issues as everyone have, the inability to boot properly with A/C plugged in, and the impossibility to wake up from sleep after the lid has been closed and reopened.

That was before I tried the following terminal command, which I found here

sudo pmset hibernatemode 0 standby 0

By the way, the issue on the boot while A/C plugged in remains, but the lid sleep opening now acts as it should, what means that, well, my Mac now awakes up.

I cannot report about the battery drain yet.

But for me, it's big step ahead as I don't have to (force) reboot every time I close the lid.
And finally, I just keep in mind to unplug the A/C adapter before hitting the power on button. That does the trick.

In hope I provided some help :)

Try just using this command it will improve battery life when in sleep: sudo pmset -b tcpkeepalive 0 if you want to revert back same command but instead of 0 do 1. I tried it for a full day and it wakes up with less than 10 % drained.

I've bought the 2TB Sabrent SSD and the NFHK adapter, the suction cups and USB adapter should arrive on Monday.

One question I have for those who've done this already; would you recommend cloning the old SSD to the new SSD while it's in the external enclosure?

Or would it be better to clone the old SSD to an external drive, install the new SSD into the MacBook, and then clone to it from the external clone?

With older Macs I'd use the first method, but I don't know if it makes a difference with NVMe SSDs.

Now my mac is up and running with 1TB SSD. I think the issue could be related to the scheme used when formatting the external driver. I had it as MBS.

1. I used a different UBS device, formatted with scheme as GUID Partition Map. Created bootable drive (Catalina)
2. Used the external enclosure to format the SSD as well with the scheme as GUID Partition Map
3. Connected the SSD using the same connector once again and booted via USB. This time, Mac showed the SSD and I was able to install OS without any issue

So I did two things - used bootable USB & SSD formatted with the scheme GUID Partition Map. Not sure which one helped, but I am up and running now for about a week now.

Haven't seen the folder icon. Of course I do see an increase battery drain, but I can live with that.

macOS should always use GUID, and btw, always choose to show all devices in disk utility, so that you can erase the parent device, not just the volume.

and btw, the charger unplugging issue happen with GUID as well. It's more towards model of ssd i guess, since some model doesnt have this behaviour.

Thanks, that looks to have worked, at least booting from USB.

However, when I went to install it, I found out I didn’t have the correct screwdriver to remove the old SSD. Is Torx 5 the one I need?
